Planning a trip to Barcelona in 2026? While the convenient Hola Barcelona travel pass is fantastic for exploring the city center, you’ll need separate tickets for adventures beyond the main tourist zone. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Barcelona Trains: Your Gateway to Beyond the City
Barcelona is served by three main train operators: OUIGO, Renfe, and Iryo. For my journey, I chose Renfe.
A common question is: "Can't I just use my Hola Barcelona travel card for everything?"
The answer is, unfortunately, no! I quickly realized that relying solely on the Hola card wouldn't let me experience all of Barcelona's magic, especially for day trips. So, I set out to book a train ticket.
While there was a staffed ticket window, I decided to try my luck with the orange self-service ticket machine.
It seemed straightforward enough, so I decided to give it a try.
2. Navigating the Barcelona Train Ticket Machine
First, you'll search for your desired station by typing its name. Although there was a language option on the bottom right, it didn't seem to work when I used it, so I carefully navigated the options in Spanish.
After searching, press the green "Confirmar" button on the bottom right.
Then, select the number of adult tickets (e.g., "1 adult") and confirm. Be careful not to press the red button, as that's for cancellation.
After confirming, the price will appear based on the distance. For my relatively short trip outside the city, it was 2.55 Euros.
I proceeded to pay with my travel card. It looked like a tap-to-pay option was available.
However, after payment, an "Error" message popped up! Later, I found out from a staff member at the ticket counter that the machine was out of order.
Despite my hiccup, the steps above are exactly how you'd normally purchase a ticket successfully! Just enter your origin and destination, and you can pay by card. If you need to buy on-site for any reason, this is the process to follow.
3. Boarding Your Barcelona Train
Ultimately, I had to go to the ticket counter to make my purchase and get my physical ticket.
To enter the platform, simply insert your ticket into the turnstile, just like you would for the subway. Easy, right?
Then, it's just a matter of waiting for your train and boarding on time. Thankfully, I didn't experience any delays – talk about good luck!
So, why can't you explore all of Barcelona with just the Hola travel card?
The Hola card specifically covers Zone 1, which includes the city center and most major tourist attractions. However, when you venture to destinations outside this zone, like the stunning Montserrat or the coastal town of Sitges, the Hola card won't cover your fare.
The current Hola travel card offers unlimited use within Zone 1, encompassing the metro, TMB buses, trams, and regional rail (Catalunya regional rail). It also covers transfers between the airport and the city center via metro, Renfe train, or TMB bus route 46.
While the Hola Barcelona card is a must-have for city exploration, be prepared to purchase separate tickets for trips to other regions as needed.
