Barcelona's Unique Cafe Scene
CAUA: A Specialty Cacao Roastery
Having visited Barcelona many times, I thought I'd seen most of its charm. But on a recent trip, I stumbled upon a truly unique cafe concept that I just had to add to my itinerary.
A dedicated specialty cacao roastery? I was intrigued, and after experiencing it, I can confidently say it's a must-visit. The flavors were incredible, and the concept itself is fascinating.
1. A Unique Cafe Find in Barcelona

When you visit Spain, enjoying churros with a rich cup of hot chocolate (or 'chocolatte') is practically a rite of passage. But finding a specialty hot chocolate shop like CAUA was a delightful surprise.
CAUA is a unique specialty chocolate shop where you can choose your cacao by origin and percentage. While they don't serve churros, the pure joy of their hot chocolate is more than enough to satisfy.
With fall officially here in late September 2026 and the weather getting crisp, this is an even more perfect spot if you're planning an autumn getaway. Here's my full review!
2. Customize Your Cacao Experience

CAUA's menu board was unlike anything I'd ever seen. It features a fascinating selection of cacao origins and percentages, from Colombia 100%, Peru 90%, and Ecuador 85%, to options from Tanzania and Madagascar.
CAUA sources cacao beans from small farms in various countries, then roasts them in small batches right there in Barcelona to create their exquisite chocolates. I've been to countless coffee shops that roast beans by origin, but a cacao roastery? That's truly innovative!
Whether you're a chocolate connoisseur or just curious, this place offers a unique experience. Their 'chocolatte' can be enjoyed hot or iced, and they also have shake options that combine chocolate with various flavored mousses.

As this was my first time encountering such a menu, I was a bit overwhelmed, but the friendly staff member kindly explained everything. She offered recommendations and pointed out the most popular choices.
They also have a small selection of treats in the display case, but honestly, they seemed a bit too sweet to pair with the rich chocolatte. Haha!
While they do offer coffee, why would you come all the way here just for a regular coffee when you can explore the world of cacao?
3. Searching for a New Cafe Experience in Barcelona?

My husband and I prefer less sweet options, so we chose high-percentage cacao varieties based on the staff's recommendation. We each picked a different origin, and while the differences weren't drastic, it was fascinating to taste the subtle nuances.
It really makes you realize how similar coffee and chocolate can be in their complexity and depth of flavor.
I remember Spanish cafes used to feel a bit less stylish compared to those back home, but Barcelona keeps evolving with more sophisticated and beautiful spots popping up. Even the cup designs at CAUA are elegant and high-end.

Keep in mind that CAUA is primarily a grab-and-go spot, so don't expect extensive seating inside. After receiving your chocolatte, you can grab lids, napkins, and other necessities from a designated area at the back.
I would definitely return to CAUA on my next visit to Barcelona. Besides this location, there's another branch in the city, so you can easily find the one most convenient for your travel plans.
Why not step away from the usual tourist traps and discover a truly unique experience like CAUA? :)
