What is Banthat Thong Street Like?

Nestled near Chulalongkorn University, Banthat Thong Street is a vibrant stretch packed with an incredible array of restaurants, cafes, and dessert spots.
While it’s charming during the day, the real magic happens after dark. I visited for dinner, and the street was alive with a fantastic mix of tourists and locals, creating an energetic, night market-like atmosphere that was simply electrifying.
Baan Kook Kai - Tom Yum Ramen

As I mentioned, my initial target was the famous Ran Jaeo Chula for their Tom Yum Ramen, but arriving around 7 PM, I was met with a daunting 1-2 hour wait.
That’s when I pivoted and found Baan Kook Kai.

What caught my eye was how packed it was with locals, and they had exactly what I was craving: Tom Yum Ramen! I walked in without hesitation.
And honestly, it turned out to be one of the most memorable meals of my entire Bangkok trip :)
📍 Baan Kook Kai
32 Soi Chula 3 Khwaeng Wang Mai, Pathum Wan, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10330 Thailand

We ordered the Tom Yum Ramen and a stir-fried pork with rice.
I was a bit nervous since it was my first time trying Tom Yum, but spoiler alert: I absolutely loved it!!

The rich, spicy, and sour Tom Yum broth was perfectly balanced with springy noodles, and it was generously loaded with shrimp, squid, meatball, and egg.
Visually, it was a feast, and the taste certainly delivered. The soup's distinct sour and spicy kick was incredibly addictive, making me want more with every spoonful.
I'll admit, the unique herbal aroma and tangy flavor might not be for everyone, but if you're adventurous, you're in for a treat.
The portion was quite substantial, easily enough for 2-3 people, so it might be a challenge to finish alone.

Just in case the Tom Yum wasn't to my liking, we also ordered the stir-fried pork with rice, which was equally delicious with its fluffy rice and savory pork.
And what truly elevated the experience was the open-air, street-side dining ambiance!

With a cool breeze after a light rain, it felt like we had truly discovered an authentic local gem.
While I can't compare it directly to Ran Jaeo Chula, Baan Kook Kai was fantastic in its own right, and I'd highly recommend it as a fantastic alternative if you're facing a long wait elsewhere.
Reviews suggest this spot also draws a crowd of locals on weekends, so you know it's good! Haha.
Leng Noom Nua Banthat Thong
📍 Leng Noom Nua Banthat Thong
1471 Banthat Thong Rd, Khwaeng Pathum Wan, Pathum Wan, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10330 Thailand

If you're exploring Banthat Thong Street, a visit to Leng Noom Nua Banthat Thong, a famous Bangkok dessert spot, is an absolute must!
Its prominent location in the heart of the street makes it easy to spot, and you'll often see people snapping photos in front of its iconic sign.

This is probably the representative photo zone of Banthat Thong Street. I had to get my picture too! Haha.
This dessert haven is always bustling, known for its crispy-fried toast skewers served with various dipping sauces and fresh milk.
We waited about 30 minutes outside the shop to get in, but a pro tip: you can use the QueQ app to get a real-time waiting number and track your turn, saving you from standing around.

Since we were quite full from dinner, we opted for 6 toast skewers, two dipping sauces, their signature milk, and Thai iced tea.
The toast had this delightful texture – somewhere between baked and fried – with a subtle buttery aroma that made it delicious even on its own.
Dipped in the sweet sauces, it was a dessert lover's dream, a flavor that felt both familiar and excitingly new. It was exactly what I craved after the bold flavors of the Tom Yum Ramen, hitting the spot perfectly as a post-dinner treat.

I will say, the milk, despite its local popularity (locals were stocking up!), was a bit more ordinary than I expected given the hype.
Honestly, while everything was tasty, I wouldn't recommend waiting 1-2 hours solely for it. Definitely download the app to manage your wait time and arrive when your table is almost ready.
How to Get to Banthat Thong Street
Reaching Banthat Thong Street is convenient via Bangkok's BTS or MRT systems.
You can take the BTS Skytrain to National Stadium Station, or the MRT Subway to Sam Yan Station, and walk from there. Since Banthat Thong Street is quite long, it's best to choose the station closest to the specific restaurant or cafe you plan to visit.
On this particular evening, I was staying near Lumpini Station, so I called a Grab around 7 PM to take me directly to Banthat Thong Street.

In Bangkok, I found myself using Grab quite frequently throughout my trip, always checking my location on Google Maps before calling a ride.
Reliable data connectivity is essential for this, which is why I relied on an eSIM and never had to worry about losing connection.

Especially if you're a fan of Tom Yum Ramen, consider this itinerary: a savory meal at Baan Kook Kai followed by delightful desserts at Leng Noom Nua.
It was truly one of the most memorable culinary journeys of my Bangkok trip, and I bet it will be for yours too in 2026!
