Planning a trip to the vibrant city of Bangkok, Thailand?🇹🇭 Let's dive into the must-have essentials you'll need for a smooth and unforgettable journey!✅

✅ Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)

✅ Smart Payment Options: Travel cards, mobile payment apps, and some cash (Thai Baht)

✅ Internet Access: SIM card or eSIM

✅ Grab App (Thailand's equivalent of Uber/Lyft)

1️⃣ TDAC (Thailand Digital Arrival Card)

This is Thailand's electronic arrival declaration form. You should complete it within 3 days (72 hours) before your arrival.✅

The Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) has recently become a mandatory electronic declaration for all arrivals.

While many nationalities, including US citizens, can enter Thailand visa-free for tourism for up to 30 days (and some for 90 days), completing the TDAC is still a requirement for all visitors.

You can easily complete the declaration on the official website linked above.

It's highly recommended to fill out your TDAC before you arrive in Bangkok. Trust us, you don't want to be scrambling to complete it after a long flight at the airport!

Remember, only forms completed within 72 hours (3 days) of your arrival are valid, so it's best to fill it out a day or two before your flight. Submitting it earlier than that will render it invalid.

Once completed, it's a good idea to print a copy or have it readily accessible on your phone to show immigration officers at Bangkok Airport!

2️⃣ How to Handle Payments in Thailand?

✅ Cash? Credit Card? Travel Card? Mobile Pay?

There are primarily three main payment methods you can use in Bangkok:

1. Cash (Thai Baht, THB)

2. Mobile Payment Apps (like GLN, which uses QR codes similar to Apple Pay or Samsung Pay)

3. Travel Cards (pre-loaded multi-currency cards)

4. Standard Credit Cards

While opinions vary on the best primary payment method in Bangkok, most travelers find it convenient to mix and match cash, cards, and mobile payments.

✅Unlike some other countries, cash is absolutely essential in Thailand!

You'll need cash for: 1) Street food vendors and market purchases, 2) Public transportation like the subway/BTS Skytrain and local buses, and 3) Crucially, many convenience stores may only accept cash for purchases under 200 Baht (about $6).✅✅✅✅

Additionally, some smaller clubs and restaurants might be cash-only.

Entry fees for Bangkok's stunning temples and historical sites are often cash-only, so it's wise to carry a decent amount of Baht with you.

For my 4-night trip to Bangkok, I initially exchanged 1000 Baht (roughly $28) at the airport. During my stay, I ended up withdrawing an additional 2000 Baht (about $56) locally and then another 1000 Baht (roughly $28).

3️⃣ Staying Connected: Internet Access

For internet access in Thailand, you can opt for either a physical SIM card or an eSIM.

Personally, I find swapping out physical SIM cards a hassle, so I prefer using an eSIM.

I purchased an eSIM for my recent Bangkok trip, and it was incredibly affordable!

Installation is straightforward once you've done it a couple of times. I've been using eSIMs from this provider since my trip to China, and I've always had a stable connection and clear installation instructions.

4️⃣ Grab (Thailand's Ride-Hailing App)

Just like many Western countries have Uber or Lyft, Thailand uses Grab, which is incredibly useful for getting around!

You'll find designated Grab Taxi zones right outside the airport terminals.

At Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport, specifically, you'll find the Grab Taxi zone conveniently located near Exit 4.

✅Similar to the TDAC, it's best to download the Grab app and register your payment method before you even land in Thailand.

You can link various payment methods like credit cards or even specific travel cards that support international transactions.

I usually link my primary credit card and a travel wallet card as a backup, just in case.

(Note: If you've traveled to China and have Alipay, remember that foreigners typically cannot use Alipay outside of China.)
