Subway vs. Taxi to the Airport

Last time I traveled to Bangkok, I booked a taxi

and went comfortably from the city to the airport.

This time, since there was an airport rail link station

right in front of my hotel, I decided to try taking the subway.

To cut straight to the chase about my subway experience:

Taxis are still the best!

1. How to Get There by Subway

Many flights returning to Korea from Bangkok are evening flights,

so most of you will probably have dinner before heading to the airport.

Fortunately, the last Bangkok Airport Rail Link train runs until midnight (00:00),

so I was able to take it.

✅ Phaya Thai Station Timetable

First train: 5:30 AM

Last train: 12:00 AM (midnight)

Weekday frequency: 9 minutes

Weekend & holiday frequency: 12 minutes

* Early morning and late evening trains have longer intervals.

You can buy Bangkok Airport Rail Link tickets on the spot,

without any advance reservations.

Each station has self-service machines,

and they support English, so it's not too difficult.

Just select the number of people and your destination, pay, and you're done!

Airport Rail Link fares vary depending on your starting and destination stations.

If you board at A8 Phaya Thai, it's 45 Baht.

If you board at A7 Ratchaprarop Station, it's 40 Baht.

The closer the station is to the airport, the fare decreases by 5 Baht.

Your ticket will be a token.

Just tap it at the turnstile to enter.

You'll need to return it when you exit at the airport station,

so be careful not to lose it!

Even though it's an airport rail link, the route is well-established,

so many locals use it for commuting.

Plus, Suvarnabhumi Airport has many late-night flights,

so there were also a lot of tourists heading back to the airport.

It looked packed even before I got on,

and in the end, I was squeezed in for about 30 minutes,

traveling from A7 Ratchaprarop Station to the airport.

If I hadn't had so much luggage, it might have been okay.

But I'd done a ton of shopping and was even carrying an extra bag,

so the journey was incredibly tough ㅠㅠ

What's more, I even boarded at A7 Ratchaprarop, which is the very next station

after the terminus A8 Phaya Thai, and it was still this crowded!

After getting off, return the token at the turnstile.

Just follow the signs hanging from the ceiling,

and head all the way to the 4th floor, which is the airport's departure level,

and voilà! You've successfully made your way from downtown Bangkok to the airport!

2. Taxi Transfer

This time, let me tell you how to get there by taxi.

While you could call an Uber on the day of your departure,

you never know how long you'll have to wait,

and on your last day, with not much Thai Baht left,

you might worry about a higher fare than expected.

That's why I opted to pre-book through Klook.

I booked my taxi pick-up from the hotel.

I dropped off my luggage at the front desk early in the morning,

went out to explore,

came back in time to pick up my bags,

and headed straight to the airport.

This way, I could enjoy my trip without wasting any time on the last day,

and it was so comfortable with my hands free.

You can board at your desired location and time,

and the price is around ~$14,

making it quite affordable, which is why I recommend it.

It's even better if you're two people, as it's around ~$7 per person!

3. Final Comparison

Suvarnabhumi Airport is pretty comparable in size

to Incheon Airport Terminal 1.

On the day I took the subway, I had already been standing for a long time,

and then I had to keep walking inside the airport,

which made the journey feel especially long... 🥲

From downtown Bangkok to Suvarnabhumi Airport,

both by subway and by taxi transfer,

as someone who has experienced both,
