Chatuchak's Surprise, and Our Salvation: Discovering Miss Chatuchak
Arriving in Bangkok, my friend and I were pumped to explore the famous Chatuchak Market! We hopped on the BTS Skytrain, full of anticipation, and as we approached, we saw the incredible sprawl of market stalls. "Wow," I thought, "we could totally get lost in here!" But then, something felt... off. It was way too quiet.
Turns out, Chatuchak is primarily a 'Weekend Market'! We'd arrived on a Thursday afternoon in August 2026, and the vast expanse of tents was eerily empty. "What in the world?!" we exclaimed. We quickly learned its official name is indeed 'Chatuchak Weekend Market'.
As the name suggests, almost all shops are open on Saturdays and Sundays. Fridays see some wholesale vendors operating, but from Monday to Thursday, most stalls are closed or only partially open. So, if you visit on a weekday like we did, you might wonder, "Why is it so quiet here?" 😂
For anyone planning a trip, I highly recommend checking the operating days before you go!
We almost melted outside in the sweltering heat, so in hindsight, it was actually a blessing in disguise. We quickly pivoted our plans to 'Miss Chatuchak,' an alternative we'd considered!
Miss Chatuchak is an indoor, mall-style market conveniently located near the main Chatuchak Market. With glorious air conditioning, it was a breeze to shop even in the midday heat. We were pleasantly surprised by the variety of souvenirs, clothing, and general goods on offer.
Indoor Markets for the Win!
I hadn't fully grasped Bangkok's humidity until we were out and about. If we'd been outside at Chatuchak, I'm pretty sure I would have melted! Being inside Miss Chatuchak was an absolute paradise. While it's not quite the sprawling size of its weekend counterpart, it certainly has everything you could need.
From this point on, it was full-on retail therapy!
After a satisfying meal at the food court and indulging in a refreshing massage, we truly felt like we'd found pure happiness.
With our shopping bags full and our bodies relaxed from the massage, it felt like we'd conquered everything Bangkok had to offer.
Of course, no Bangkok trip would be complete without visiting the Grand Palace.
