Most major tourist attractions and facilities are operating normally, and both Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports are open.

Public transportation, including the Airport Rail Link, BTS, MRT, and Red Line, is also running as usual.

However, some roads are still affected by flooding, so road travel might take longer than usual.

Especially if you're heading to Bangkok soon,

and your transportation options before you go.

Heavy rains on September 26-27 caused flooding in Bangkok and surrounding areas,

leading to widespread baggage congestion and delays at Bangkok airports.

Some flights at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport have been cancelled,

[Currently, based on reports, routes to Phuket, Khon Kaen, Hanoi, and Singapore are affected]

and some international flights are experiencing delays of several hours.

Air traffic operations are also being affected by the heavy rains,

and the baggage handling system is particularly tangled.

While Suvarnabhumi Airport itself

continues to operate its runways and overall airport functions,

If you're using Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport

today or in the next few days,

you absolutely must

avoid checked baggage.

v In fact, there have been cases where luggage couldn't be collected and was processed for home/hotel delivery

due to the situation.

v The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has prepared U-Tapao Airport to operate as a 24-hour alternate airport until October 4th, due to the possibility of continued adverse weather.

+ What about Bangkok's Don Mueang Airport?

Bangkok has two major airports: Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK). While traffic around both airports was affected by the heavy rains, the large-scale baggage congestion and Thai Airways operational disruptions primarily occurred at Suvarnabhumi Airport. Don Mueang Airport experienced travel inconveniences due to surrounding road flooding, but airport operations and flights have continued normally.

And as of the latest TAT update at 1 PM on 9/29, both Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang are operating, and the Airport Rail Link and Red Line are also running.

Bangkok Flood Current Situation

As a result of these heavy rains, all 50 districts of Bangkok have been designated as disaster-affected areas.

Approximately 700,000 people have been affected,

with eastern and northeastern Bangkok experiencing the most significant damage.

The areas most severely impacted by flooding include:

Lat Krabang

Bang Kapi

Khan Na Yao

Sai Mai

Suan Luang

Saphan Sung

Lak Si

and more.

Thankfully, the rain has subsided, and the water is currently receding.

The Thai government estimates that if there's no additional heavy rainfall, the remaining water in Bangkok can be drained over the next 2-3 days.

So, should you cancel your Bangkok trip?

Looking at the current situation,

a trip to Bangkok itself is not impossible.

​

BTS, MRT, and the Airport Rail Link are all operating, and most facilities for tourists are also open.

However, there are significant differences in the situation by area,

so short trips focusing on Bangkok's main tourist attractions are recommended.

Especially in areas with lingering road flooding, travel times using taxis or Grab can be *very, very, very* much longer than usual.

Even when there's no flood damage, during a trip to Bangkok,

you usually have to wait more than 30 minutes to catch a taxi from Suvarnabhumi Airport,

and if you consider that taking a taxi in downtown Bangkok always extends the estimated arrival time by more than double,

v allow *very* generous travel time,

v avoid taxis altogether, or

v pre-book transportation for all airport-hotel transfers

it would be wise to plan your Bangkok trip accordingly.

[Heads up: Even on a normal rainy day, a taxi from downtown Bangkok to the airport can easily take over 3 hours!]

What about Suvarnabhumi Airport?

Suvarnabhumi Airport is currently

a bit chaotic, but flights are operating.

If you're planning to arrive or depart from Bangkok soon,

1. Check your flight status,

and book cancellable tickets.

2. If possible, avoid checked luggage,

and we *strongly* recommend traveling with carry-on only!!!!

Floods, Heavy Rain > Getting Around Downtown Bangkok?

Currently, BTS, MRT, and the Airport Rail Link are all operating.

So, if you're going to Bangkok, for the time being, instead of road transport (like taxis),

it's more convenient to choose accommodation with good access to the Skytrain/subway.

Especially if you're thinking about airport transfers, it's better to choose a hotel in an area easily connected to the Airport Rail Link or close to BTS/MRT stations.

+) Don't assume that hotels around Lat Krabang Airport are

“safe just because they're close to the airport.”

Lat Krabang has been officially announced as one of the severely affected areas this time.

Recommended Hotel/Accommodation Locations During Bangkok Floods

If you're traveling to Bangkok right now,

minimize taxi usage, and

​

choose hotels in areas directly connected to BTS, MRT, or the Airport Rail Link.

​

Personally, for convenient sightseeing, I recommend

Siam/Ratchaprasong, and for easy transfers to Suvarnabhumi Airport, Phaya Thai.

In Bangkok, currently experiencing heavy rain and floods,

for accommodation, locations directly connected to BTS, MRT, and the Airport Rail Link, such as

Siam–Ratchaprasong + Phaya Thai,

are expected to be the most convenient.

(Bangkok's traffic is *always* legendary, even without floods........)
