After a week in Bangkok, my palate was starting to tire of Pad Thai, so I decided it was time to explore other local delicacies.
Searching for the undisputed king of pork leg rice (Khao Kha Mu) in Bangkok, one name kept popping up: Charoensang Silom. The reviews were legendary: "melts in your mouth," "so tender even those without teeth can enjoy it," "the meat falls right off the bone with a fork." Naturally, my curiosity was piqued, and I had to go see for myself.

Getting to Charoensang Silom

From Asok Station, take the MRT to Silom Station. Then, transfer to the BTS Skytrain at Sala Daeng and ride four more stops until you reach Saphan Taksin Station.

From Saphan Taksin Station, take Exit 3, turn left, and walk straight for about 10-15 minutes until you reach Charoensang Silom. The weather can be hot and the streets narrow, but for Bangkok's undisputed champion of pork leg rice, it's a journey you won't regret!

You'll pass a rather large hotel-like building, and then you're almost there. It felt a bit longer than a mere 10-minute walk, perhaps closer to 15 minutes, especially in the Bangkok heat.

Instead of being on the main road, the restaurant is tucked away one block into a charming alleyway.

Look for the red sign proudly displaying a Michelin sticker! Just tell them your party size, and head on in.
The Menu

Here's a look at the Charoensang Silom menu. Don't worry if you don't see English; ordering is still quite straightforward.
The main decision is whether to order a half or full portion. I went for the full pork leg, which costs 320 THB. The staff kept pointing to the 160 THB option on the right, but I stubbornly insisted on the larger 320 THB portion. My advice? The 160 THB half-portion is more than enough for one person! Rice is ordered separately for 10 THB.

I worried there might be a long wait during lunch or dinner, but thankfully, I was seated immediately. The food arrives incredibly fast, often within 30 seconds of ordering, and the turnover is quick, making it a great spot even if you're dining solo.

This special dipping sauce is the real "kick"! It's served in a small dish alongside your meal.

And there it was: my pork leg! The moment it arrived, I realized the portion was far more than one person could comfortably eat. It comes served with fresh coriander and some pickled greens, reminiscent of Korean 'siraegi'.

Served with a generous scoop of rice, all you need to do is gently pull the tender meat from the bone and enjoy!

When I read that the meat separates from the bone with just a gentle touch of a fork, I thought, "Surely it can't be that tender?" So, I prodded it with my spoon, and without exaggeration, this might be the softest pork leg I've ever tasted. The savory, slightly sweet soy broth flavor is incredibly addictive and universally appealing.

It's delicious dipped in the spicy sauce, or simply enjoyed with some of the savory broth and tender meat spooned over your rice. Before you know it, your plate will be sparkling clean.
While the 10-15 minute walk from the BTS station and the lack of air conditioning are minor drawbacks, the incredibly tender pork leg makes it absolutely worth the journey. This is the kind of place that draws you back again and again once you've experienced its unique charm.
