Bali SIM Card 2026: Pre-Book vs. Airport Purchase Guide

When you land in a new country, after clearing immigration, two things are usually at the top of your to-do list: getting a local SIM card and exchanging currency.

Especially in Southeast Asia, you have a choice: either pick up a SIM once you arrive or arrange it beforehand. For your Bali adventure, let's break down the pros and cons of both options.

Once you've cleared customs and are out in the arrivals hall, you'll spot booths from two main mobile carriers.

They're right next to each other, so you might assume the prices are identical. But a closer look reveals slight differences!

I only checked the top tier at the time.

But, are you really going to burn through more than 18GB of data?

Unless you're planning a month-long stay, probably not. If 18GB is your target, the price seems to even out between them.

While convenient, buying an Indonesian SIM at the airport isn't necessarily cheap for Southeast Asian standards, and it can take surprisingly long. If you'd pre-booked your Bali SIM, you'd simply collect it. But here, you have to wait in line behind whoever is there. We breezed through immigration, thinking we'd be first, but there were already people from other flights, and we spent a good chunk of time just waiting.

Normally, a short wait isn't a huge deal. But on this particular trip, we'd arrived late, and our pre-arranged driver had already been waiting for over 50 minutes. We were definitely feeling the pressure!

You'll also need to provide your phone model and IMEI number. Honestly, if this hadn't been through a major travel platform like KKday, I might have been hesitant. But since it's a legal requirement for buying an Indonesian SIM, I trusted the process, and everything went smoothly.
