Bali Mount Batur Jeep Tour Itinerary

The Bali Mount Batur Jeep Tour is an immersive half-day-plus experience, typically lasting around 10 hours. Here's a chronological breakdown of the full itinerary:
Pickup Area | Pickup Time | Notes |
Ubud | 03:00 AM | Closest to Mount Batur, later pickup |
Seminyak, Canggu, Airport | 02:00 AM - 02:30 AM | Southern beach areas |
📌 On this particular day, I departed from Canggu. I'll explain why in the final tips section!
Jeep Tour Route - Mount Batur

After a 2:00 AM pickup and a two-hour drive, we arrived at the Mount Batur Jeep Tour meeting point. Here, we were assigned to our brightly colored jeeps – yellow, red, or blue – and met our dedicated guide (who also doubled as our photographer!) before heading up Mount Batur.

1️⃣ Heading to the Sunrise Point
The drive up takes about 30 minutes, and you'll be riding in the open-top back of the jeep.
📌 It gets surprisingly chilly around 4:30 AM with the wind whipping by in the open jeep! Make sure to wear a warm outer layer. I even brought stick-on hand warmers, which were a lifesaver.

2️⃣ Pre- and Post-Sunrise Photo Session
Upon reaching the sunrise point, I was amazed to see dozens of jeeps already lined up. It's a popular spot!
What really impressed me was that my guide even set up a tripod for photos! He took pictures with both his camera and my phone, immediately sending them to me via Airdrop.

He kept shooting until I was completely happy with the shots!

We waited for the sun to rise while enjoying breakfast. My 5-star hotel even packed a lovely breakfast for me, as shown in the picture below. You can see my hotel review here.

I visited Bali during the rainy season, so clouds obscured the full sunrise. Still, I was incredibly grateful it didn't rain!

After the sun rose, we took some additional photos with the yellow jeep before heading to the Black Lava fields!
Black Lava Exploration

A 20 to 30-minute jeep ride brought us to the striking Black Lava area. This unique landscape was formed hundreds of years ago when Mount Batur erupted, leaving behind vast stretches of solidified lava, creating an extraordinary scene of black rocks and sand.

I'd read reviews suggesting to bring a mask, but I didn't. While it can get dusty, it wasn't too bad on my visit.
Kintamani - Akasa Cafe

After the Black Lava, we headed back to the morning meeting point where our original driver was waiting. From there, we drove to Akasa Cafe in the Kintamani region. This cafe boasts a fantastic panoramic view of both Mount Batur and Lake Batur, making it the perfect spot to relax and enjoy breakfast or brunch.

Afterward, guides usually offer options like visiting a coffee plantation, hot springs, or even the Bali Swing. However, since we had another East Bali tour booked for the next day, we opted to conserve energy and asked to be dropped off at our Ubud accommodation. The tour concluded just past noon!
Guide & What to Wear Tips

Colors | White, light colors | Bright clothing stands out against the dark mountain and sky backdrop. |
Outerwear | Light jacket or hoodie (essential) | It's surprisingly cold and windy on the mountain in the early morning. |
Footwear | Sneakers or trekking shoes | You'll be walking on slippery lava terrain; sandals or flip-flops are dangerous. |
Expect Dirt | Your clothes might get dirty from the jeep roof and lava dust. | Avoid wearing brand new or expensive clothing. |

Booking Advice & Review

1️⃣ The Mount Batur Jeep Tour involves about 4 hours of driving time. So, make sure to request a comfortable vehicle when you book your tour!

2️⃣ If getting great photos is a priority for you, my jeep tour guide was named PANDY. If you like the style of my pictures, you might want to inquire about him. (I spoke with PANDY in English, so I'm not sure if he speaks Korean.)
3️⃣ Consider scheduling this tour for a day when you're already moving to Ubud. This way, you'll get an early start, and the driver can drop you directly at your Ubud accommodation, saving you taxi fare (e.g., from Canggu to Ubud).

I truly believe the Bali Jeep Tour is an absolute must-do when you visit Bali. Waking up early can be tough, but the unique experience it offers makes for a Bali trip that's far from ordinary.
📌 Refer to the booking tips and review I've shared today, pay attention to your outfit, and get ready to capture countless 'life shots' during your Mount Batur Jeep Tour!

The tour takes about 10 hours in total. For the Ubud area, which is closer to Mount Batur, pickup is at 3:00 AM. For southern areas like Seminyak, Canggu, and the airport, pickup is between 2:00 AM and 2:30 AM.
Around 4:30 AM, it is cold and windy at the top of the mountain, so you must wear outerwear like a lightweight puffer jacket or a zip-up hoodie. We recommend wearing bright-colored clothes for better photos, and you should wear sneakers or trekking shoes instead of slippers to walk on the slippery Black Lava terrain.
Black Lava is a terrain formed by hardened lava that flowed during Mount Batur's eruption hundreds of years ago. You can see a unique and exotic landscape with endless stretches of black rocks and sand.
We recommend taking the tour on the day you move your accommodation from areas like Canggu or Seminyak to Ubud. You can get picked up from your current hotel in the early morning and request to be dropped off at your new hotel in Ubud after the tour, saving you extra transportation costs.
