Lempuyang Temple (The Gates of Heaven)

Our first stop was the world-famous Lempuyang Temple, home to the iconic 'Gates of Heaven'. To beat the massive crowds, arriving early in the morning is absolutely crucial to secure a low queue number. Since I booked an all-inclusive private tour, our guide handled all the entry tickets for us, saving us plenty of hassle.

We arrived around 7:00 AM and received queue number 24. Thanks to visiting during the shoulder season, we barely had to wait at all before taking our photos.

Wearing a sarong is mandatory here, and it is provided for free. If you're wearing a tank top or sleeveless shirt, they will also provide a free scarf to cover your shoulders out of respect for the temple.

Our guide shared an important cultural tip: kissing is strictly forbidden in front of the gates, as Lempuyang is a highly sacred Hindu temple.

Pro Photo Tip: Standing poses generally look much more elegant and dramatic than sitting ones. You'll get about 3 to 5 minutes for your turn, and the local photographers will help capture solo and couple shots using the famous mirror trick.

Right opposite the Gates of Heaven, there are beautiful grand staircases where our guide snapped some incredible candid shots. Having a guide who knows the best angles and lighting makes all the difference on this tour!

After a quick shuttle ride up, we were greeted by the majestic volcano. The clouds move quickly here, so timing your shots between the mist is key.

While a perfectly clear day is ideal, the light mist wrapping around the peak of Mount Agung actually added a mystical, ethereal vibe to our photos. It's a dream location for anyone wanting epic landscape shots.

They also have their own version of the Gates of Heaven here! Honestly, the photos here turned out even better than the ones at Lempuyang, so don't skip this spot!

For lunch, you can ask your driver to take you to a local restaurant or recommend a scenic spot. Our Ubud hotel was kind enough to pack us a breakfast box for the early start. We sat down with our guide at Lahangan Sweet and enjoyed our breakfast with one of the best views in Bali. (Shoutout to our amazing Ubud resort!)

Tirta Gangga Water Palace

Next, we headed to Tirta Gangga, a stunning former royal water palace. Filled with serene koi ponds, grand fountains, and stone stepping stones, it perfectly showcases traditional Balinese architecture surrounded by lush greenery.

The ultimate photo spot here is standing on the stone path while giant golden koi swim around you. The final shots look so magical they almost seem AI-generated. The East Bali Tour is truly a paradise for photography lovers.

By this point, I was getting a bit tired from all the posing, but our guide was so enthusiastic, constantly pointing out new spots and suggesting poses. Looking back at the photos now, I'm so glad he pushed me! The memories (and the photos) are totally worth the effort.

Kanto Lampo Waterfall

For our final stop, we visited the majestic Kanto Lampo Waterfall. It's just a short 5-minute walk down from the parking lot to reach the base of this cascading beauty.

Since we arrived after 1:00 PM, the queue for photos was already quite long. This was easily the busiest spot on our entire East Bali itinerary.

Interestingly, while Asian tourists tend to prefer the aesthetic temples and palaces like Lempuyang and Tirta Gangga, Western travelers absolutely love the rugged, adventurous vibe of Kanto Lampo Waterfall.

Since each group takes about 5 minutes or more for solo and couple shots, the wait time was going to be around an hour and a half.

I decided I would return early in the morning on another day to get the perfect shot. Instead, we took photos at the smaller waterfall right next to it, which was still incredibly beautiful and much quieter!

✅ Quick Tip: Wear your swimsuit underneath your clothes. Even if you don't swim, the mist from the waterfall will get you completely soaked, so bringing a change of dry clothes is highly recommended.
