Making your travels smooth, this is Travel Lubricant!
If you're planning a trip to Bali, then you definitely need to prepare your visa!
Getting a Visa on Arrival (VOA)
at the local airport can take a long time, so
it's a good idea to apply for your visa in advance from home.
Many of you probably found applying for the Indonesia Electronic Visa on Arrival (E-VOA)
more complicated than expected, right?
Let's go through it step-by-step together.

① E-VOA vs VOA Comparison

There are broadly two types of visas for entering Bali.
Category | VOA | E-VOA |
Application Method | On arrival at the local airport | Online pre-application before departure |
Processing Time | Immediate (20-60 min wait if queue is long) | Issued online within 5-10 minutes |
Price | 500,000 Rupiah | 500,000 Rupiah |
Stay Duration | 30 days | 30 days |
Automated Gate | Not possible | Possible |
I also dislike waiting in lines,
so I applied for my E-VOA in advance from home.
While it was great to pass through the automated gate quickly,
I was a little disappointed that I didn't get an entry stamp in my passport.
Something to note for those of you who collect passport stamps!

✔ E-VOA Recommended for:
Peak season travel · Night arrivals
If you hate waiting in airport lines, E-VOA is much more convenient.
② 6 Things to Prepare Before Applying

✔ Passport (with at least 6 months validity remaining)
✔ Return ticket (any ticket departing Indonesia is OK)
✔ JPG of your passport photo page (only the passport information page should be visible)
✔ ID photo JPG (400×600 pixels or larger, under 2MB)
✔ 1 PDF file each for your passport photo page and return ticket
✔ Internationally accepted credit/debit card
Your return ticket doesn't have to be to your home country.
Any flight departing Indonesia,
regardless of the destination country, will be accepted.
For long-term travelers, it seems even an outbound ticket dated later than your initial stay duration is acceptable.
This checklist of preparations,
you'll need to double-check it the day before you apply,
so saving it will make it easy to find again!
③ Step-by-Step Application Guide
✔ Application Website:
STEP 1 — Access the website and click APPLY

Membership registration isn't mandatory.
However, if you plan to stay for more than 30 days or
need an extension,
it's more convenient to register as a member for later use.
STEP 2 — Select Visa Type

Republic of Korea
→ General, Family or Social
→ Tourism, Family Visit and Transit
→ B1 – Tourism (Visa on Arrival)
Select in this order, then click Detail & Apply.
STEP 3 — Upload Photo Files

Upload your passport JPG photo and identification JPG photo
separately, then click Next.
STEP 4 — Enter Personal Information

Let me first highlight some points that can be confusing.
✔ Phone Number: Enter in +82 10 format
(After entering country code 82, omit the leading 0 and enter the rest of the number)

✔ Address in Indonesia: Refer to your accommodation booking voucher
If it's a hotel or resort, you can check it directly on Google Maps
The postal code is also listed on Google Maps.

✔ The files uploaded on this screen
Passport photo + return ticket must both be in PDF format.
STEP 5 — Final Check and Save

If there are no issues with the entered information,
select the checkbox and click Save.
STEP 6 — Complete Payment

After clicking submit and registering 'With Register',
the status will change to 'Payment Pending'.

If you click on the Transaction Number,
the information you entered will appear. After reviewing it once more,
if you make the payment with an eligible card,
the approval document will arrive in your provided email.
✔ If you only apply but don't complete the payment, it will be invalid.
Be sure to check that the document is attached to the email.
④ Precautions & Checkpoints

✔ E-VOA Validity Period: 90 days from the date of issue
If you do not enter the country within 90 days, it will automatically expire.
✔ Recommended Application Timing: 2 weeks before departure
If you get it too early, it might expire before your trip,
so 2 weeks prior is the safest.
✔ The 30-day stay period is counted from the moment you pass through immigration.
Both the arrival day and departure day are each counted as one full day.

✔ If you overstay, there's a fine of 1,000,000 Rupiah per day.
I used the auto-gates with the E-VOA,
and there were no separate document checks.
It seems everything was already registered in my passport.
Still, make sure to take a screenshot of your approval document and keep it safe!
✔ If the payment window doesn't pop up, find the link in the email you received and
complete the payment there.
⑤ Extension Information for Long-Term Stays

If you're planning to stay in Bali for more than 30 days,
there's something crucial you need to know about the extension process.
✔ Currently, online extensions are not possible.
Starting from June 2025, visa extensions must be done by
personally visiting the local immigration office to
register your fingerprints and photo (biometrics).

✔ Number of Extensions Allowed: 1 (up to 30 additional days, for a total maximum of 60 days)
✔ When to Apply for Extension: 1 week before your stay expires
✔ Extension Cost: Additional fees apply
✔ The immigration office tends to run out of queue numbers quickly, even early in the morning.
If you use an agency, you can often handle it with just one visit.
You might still see blog posts mentioning that online extensions are possible.
That information is based on rules *before* June 2025.
Please remember that an in-person visit is now mandatory.

By following the application method I've outlined above,
step by step,
getting your Indonesia Bali E-VOA
will be much simpler than you might think, right?
Remember, you need to complete the payment after applying for your E-VOA
for the visa issuance to be successful.
So, definitely make sure to complete the payment.

E-VOA can be applied for online before departure, issued within 5-10 minutes, and allows access to automatic gates. In contrast, VOA on arrival at the airport is applied for on-site, may involve a waiting time of 20-60 minutes, and does not allow access to automatic gates. The price for both is the same at 500,000 Rupiah.
You will need a passport with at least 6 months validity, a return flight ticket departing from Indonesia, a JPG file of your passport photo, a JPG file of a recent photograph (400x600 pixels or larger, 2MB or less), one PDF file each of your passport photo and return flight ticket, and an internationally usable payment card. The return flight ticket is valid even if it's not to Korea, as long as it's a flight departing from Indonesia.
The E-VOA is valid for 90 days from the date of issue. If you do not enter Indonesia within 90 days, it will automatically expire. Applying too early might lead to expiration before your trip, so the safest time to apply is 2 weeks before your departure.
From June 2025, online extensions will no longer be possible. You must visit the local immigration office in person to register your fingerprints and photo (biometrics). Extensions are limited to one time for a maximum of 30 additional days and must be applied for one week before your current stay expires.
