Out of all the adventures in Bali, the one that truly tested my stamina was the

Mount Batur sunrise jeep tour.

Imagine meeting up at 2:50 AM,

bouncing up off-road trails in a jeep,

witnessing the stars and sunrise from Mount Batur, and then

exploring the dramatic Black Lava fields after the sun is up.

The photos look absolutely stunning,

and it’s often a top choice for honeymooners in Bali.

But in reality, you’ll be battling sleep deprivation, dust storms, and a seriously bumpy ride.

Still, if you’re looking for a landscape beyond Bali’s usual beaches, pools, and jungles,

or want some truly unique travel photos,

this tour is definitely worth experiencing at least once!

Go on your FIRST day in Bali!

Personally, I recommend scheduling this tour

right after you arrive in Bali, rather than mid-trip.

If you’ve already spent a few days sightseeing, swimming,

and perhaps enjoying some drinks,

waking up at 3:00 AM becomes incredibly difficult.

I checked into The Royal Purnama late at night,

and was so worried about not waking up on time that I decided to just stay awake.

I even swam in the private pool to pass the time.

I absolutely DO NOT recommend this method!

Many international flights arrive in Bali late at night, often between 11:00 PM and 1:30 AM.

This makes scheduling the Mount Batur Jeep Tour right after arrival a smart move!

You’ll save on an extra night’s accommodation (since you're barely in the hotel anyway)

and maximize your time. It’s a win-win!

What to Wear & What to Bring

Since the Mount Batur Jeep Tour involves a lot of photo opportunities,

I spent a while deliberating on what to wear.

(I worried bright colors would get dirty, but dark colors wouldn't look as good.)

In the end, I boldly went with beige pants.

Recommendation: Bright or White Clothing

Against the dark volcanic landscape and the sky,

bright or white clothing truly stands out in photos!

Vibrant colors like red, blue, or pink look fantastic,

and white definitely pops in pictures 🤍

However, if you choose white,

I suggest bringing something inexpensive from retailers like Shein or Temu,

or an outfit you wouldn't mind potentially discarding.

After driving off-road and visiting the Black Lava,

your clothes will get quite dirty from volcanic ash and dust.

Definitely bring a light, long-sleeved windbreaker! It gets quite chilly in the early morning. Wearing a short-sleeved top like I did meant I felt a bit cold.

As the jeep navigates the unpaved roads,

there’s a lot of dust, exhaust, and sand blowing around.

Motion Sickness Medication

The jeep shakes violently side-to-side and up-and-down.

Even if you don't usually get car sickness, take it before you go!

I was so exhausted that I actually slept through the ride,

but I'm sure I would have gotten sick if I hadn't been so tired.

2:50 AM: Off to Mount Batur!

Bali under the cover of darkness.

After checking into The Royal Purnama the night before,

I decided to pull an all-nighter, fearing I wouldn't wake up.

Then, at 2:50 AM, it was time to meet.

At first, I wondered how I'd endure 40 minutes in such a shaky jeep,

but I ended up falling asleep as if I'd been knocked out.

It was my first time realizing I could sleep so soundly in a bumpy vehicle!

When I finally came to my senses at Mount Batur,

the sky was filled with countless stars!

Our driver brought toast and juice, but I was too groggy to take pictures. Still half-asleep – ⭐️

Mount Batur Sunrise: Mission Accomplished!

The sky slowly began to change colors,

and the sun started to rise over Mount Batur.

The moment light spread across the dark mountain ridges

and the surrounding landscape slowly revealed itself will stay with me forever. : )

I never imagined watching a sunrise from a mountain in the early morning

would feel this rewarding.

It made me wish I had sought out more sunrises back home!

It’s fascinating to see the color difference between the Insta360’s Leica Vivid and the Galaxy’s default camera.

I wished for my freediving equalization skills to improve! (?)

After watching the sunrise, we headed to the Black Lava fields.

The vast expanse of black volcanic terrain offered a completely different vibe

from the usual ocean or rice paddy views.

We wrapped up with a group photo with my colleagues!

In the End, It's All About the Photos!

Ultimately, the jeep tour is all about capturing those incredible photos,

so having a driver who is enthusiastic about photography

is truly essential!

Don't expect a smooth ride on those off-road paths.

You'll have a much more satisfying experience if you find a driver

who excels at directing poses, suggesting angles, and genuinely loves taking pictures.

offering a chance to see a truly different side of Bali!

However, be prepared for the early start, off-road conditions, dust, and bumps.
