When it comes to currency exchange in Bali, these days,

using a travel card to withdraw cash directly from an ATM is definitely the way to go.

I'll tell you how to withdraw cash for free in Bali and

share some important precautions for using travel cards.

Indonesian Rupiah

is difficult to obtain outside of Indonesia.

So, if you convert your home currency to USD first,

and then exchange those dollars for Rupiah locally,

you're essentially doing a double conversion,

which means you're bound to lose money on exchange rates.

And even if you carry USD with you,

hunting for a money changer with good rates

can be surprisingly inconvenient and time-consuming.

That's why it's best to carry just around $200 in USD for emergencies,

and generally rely on ATM withdrawals using a travel card.

Comparing Fee-Free ATM Banks by Travel Card

When withdrawing cash from ATMs in Bali,

the fees can vary significantly depending on which bank you use.

Let me break it down by travel card provider.

BNI, with its orange signs, is common at the airport, in Ubud, and on the Gili Islands.

Mandiri, marked by its blue signs, is recommended at larger branches on the Gili Islands.

There can be differences depending on the region,

so always check the screen before you withdraw.

I primarily used only BNI and Mandiri.

✔ Airport: Use ATMs at exchange offices with BNI or Mandiri staff.

✔ Gili: Use ATMs next to banks.

✔ Ubud: Withdraw cash at Coco Mart as a precaution for any unexpected situations.

Right in front of the airport's departure hall,

there are several money exchange offices lined up,

and you'll find BNI ATMs that are fee-free for both Travelog and Travel Wallet cards.

However, ATMs can sometimes run out of cash, so

it's a good idea to know the locations of other ATMs as well.

Precautions When Withdrawing from ATMs

I'll share some tips based on my actual experiences to help you avoid common pitfalls.

1. If you see a message about "additional fees" on the screen,

move to another ATM immediately.

Withdrawal limits and

monthly fee-free withdrawal counts vary by bank and card.

2. Bali & Overseas ATMs

can sometimes **swallow your card**, it's said to happen quite often.

While in Gili, an ATM

kept showing errors and wouldn't dispense cash,

but fortunately, it didn't swallow my card;

it was just a failed withdrawal.

Overseas ATMs sometimes aren't well-maintained,

so these incidents can happen occasionally.

Usually, after some time, they say the money will be

returned, but that's not always the case,

so if you're feeling uneasy, it's safer to use an ATM

right next to a bank during weekday daytime hours.

**Overseas, card cloning incidents (skimming)**

are reportedly quite common, so

I've developed my own management methods.

✔ **Only unblock your card when using an ATM**

How to Withdraw Cash from an ATM

**1. Insert Card**

**2. Select Language** (English)

**3. Enter PIN**

(If it's a 6-digit PIN, enter '00' before your PIN.)

**4. Select Amount**

(Cannot withdraw more than 2,500,000 Rupiah per transaction.)

**5. Select Checking account** (Withdrawal from savings)

(Sometimes it might be labeled as 'Saving'.)

**6. Card Return**

**7. Cash Withdrawal Complete**

Occasionally, some ATMs require a **6-digit PIN**.

**Enter '00' before your PIN.**

While the use of cash in Bali travel has decreased recently,

there are still places where **you'll inevitably need to use cash**.
