Bali Airport Guide 2026: Visa, SIM & Pickups
Get ready for a smooth landing in Bali. Learn how to navigate Visa on Arrival, set up your eSIM, find the best ATMs, and secure a hassle-free airport pickup.

The day I've been waiting for has finally arrived—time to head to Bali!
Since we'll be arriving at the airport in the late afternoon,
I figured there would be more to do than expected,
so I realized I needed to prepare well in advance.
From immigration and getting a visa to finding ATMs at Bali's Denpasar Airport,
connecting to cellular data, finding our pickup ride, and more...

To avoid wandering around aimlessly at the airport,
I knew having all the information beforehand was key,
so I did a ton of research!
Now that I'm back from my amazing Bali trip,
I'm sharing my real-life, firsthand tips,
and I hope this helps anyone planning their next getaway!
Should You Get Your Bali Visa in Advance? On-Arrival is Totally Fine!

When entering Bali, Indonesia, there are
two ways to get your tourist visa.
The e-VOA (Electronic Visa on Arrival)
can be applied for online in advance,
which has the huge advantage of letting you breeze through the airport quickly.
However, the downside is that the website is prone to errors,
and uploading your passport and e-ticket PDFs
can be quite a hassle.

On the other hand, the Visa on Arrival (VOA)
can be paid for directly at the counter upon arrival.
Personally, I went with the VOA at the airport.
Here's why:
It costs about 500,000 IDR (approx. ~$26),
which is the same base price.
In fact, if you apply for the e-VOA online,
there's an extra transaction fee making it more expensive than paying cash on arrival;
(the online processing fee is 19,500 IDR).
Since I didn't travel during peak season,
getting my VOA at the airport was super fast anyway.
Plus, the most important factor...
Your luggage takes forever to come out anyway, so you'll be waiting regardless! lol
If you are planning to visit Bali during the absolute peak season (especially July–August),
then I'd definitely recommend getting the e-VOA in advance.

Cash Fee 13,500 IDR / Card Fee 24,500 IDR

What About Airport ATMs and Currency Exchange?

There are plenty of ATMs inside the airport.
Indonesia uses the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR),
and you can easily withdraw cash using an international debit card
or credit card.
I used my multi-currency travel card (like Travelog or similar)
and was able to withdraw cash with zero fees.
These days, travel cards are so convenient
that you barely need to use airport currency exchange counters!
What’s inside the Bali Airport Duty-Free Shop?

It was cleaner than I expected, with a great variety
of brands on display.
From Banana Boat sunscreen to perfumes, alcohol, and chocolates, it had a solid selection.
Everything was well-stocked,
While it might not be a major shopping destination,
it's perfect for grabbing souvenir chocolates, local snacks,
or any last-minute cosmetics
you might have forgotten to pack.
More Important Than Wi-Fi: Download WhatsApp!

Just like how we have our go-to messaging apps at home,
WhatsApp is the undisputed king of communication
in Bali.
You’ll use WhatsApp for communicating with pickup drivers, booking local restaurants,
talking with hotels, and messaging Airbnb hosts. Literally everything.
If you download and set it up before you leave, you can use it instantly.
Even before your trip, you can use it to message your hotel or tour operators
directly if you have any questions.
It's super intuitive,
so you'll get the hang of it in no time.
I used the Klook airport pickup service,
and I received all the details about my arrival time, vehicle, and driver profile
straight through WhatsApp.
You definitely don't want to miss these updates, so pre-installing is a must!

Buying a SIM Card at the Airport is a Waste! Preparing an eSIM in Advance is a Much Better Deal!
As soon as you arrive at the airport, you'll see stalls selling physical SIM cards,
but I was shocked by how pricey they were!
After reading reviews, I found out they often push expensive plans
by casually claiming that the cheaper options are completely sold out.
I set up my Bali eSIM before leaving the country,
and as soon as I landed, my data connected instantly!
No need to hunt for public Wi-Fi,
and WhatsApp worked right away, which was incredibly convenient.
The speed was fast, and with unlimited data,
even after using up the daily high-speed limit, the internet kept on going.
For someone like me who scrolls through YouTube and Reels constantly, it was an absolute lifesaver!
It's much cheaper than buying a physical SIM at the airport,
and you can get a 20% discount using the link below,
so keep that in mind if you're planning a trip!
If your phone doesn't support eSIMs,
they can also ship a physical SIM card to you,
so definitely check your device compatibility and order in advance!
The Ultimate Guide to Getting from Bali Airport to the City Center!

Once you arrive, pick up your luggage, and step out,
you're faced with the most crucial final step:
getting from the airport to your accommodation!
There are several ways to do this, each with its own pros and cons.

1️⃣ Klook Airport Pickup (Highly Recommended!)
I booked an airport pickup in advance through Klook.
If you wait near the Klook booth,
your driver will meet you there with the vehicle details
previously sent to you via WhatsApp!

2️⃣ Hotel Pickup Service
Some accommodations offer their own
airport shuttle services.
While some might offer it for free,
most tend to be slightly more expensive than Klook.
Plus, if communication goes a bit awry,
it can turn into a bit of an unnecessary hassle.

3️⃣ Grab / Bolt
Grab and Bolt are the main ride-hailing apps in Bali.
However, you can't hail them right in front of the terminal;
you have to walk all the way over to the designated parking garage area to call one.
Dragging your heavy suitcases and navigating the crowd just to find a ride
made me realize that, without a doubt, the right answer is
Klook's airport pickup service.
It's incredibly seamless to book ahead, arrive at the airport,
and hop straight into a waiting car.
Especially if you are arriving on a night flight, or heading straight
to outer areas like Ubud or Canggu,
Klook is highly recommended to beat Bali's notorious traffic with peace of mind.

For this Bali trip, I flew with Garuda Indonesia.
The schedule was much more convenient than Korean Air,
allowing me to enjoy a bit more of my first day.
So I headed straight to Ubud!

picking up luggage, and meeting the driver—
if you take care of these little things in advance,
your trip will start off on the smoothest note possible.
To help you avoid unnecessary hassle
and enjoy a perfectly seamless transition,
I've gathered everything from Bali airport pickups to visas and currency exchange
into this ultimate guide.
I truly hope this post helps make your upcoming Bali adventure
just a little bit easier and more exciting!
