Yangon Travel Cost 2026: Budgeting Under $50 a Day
Is Myanmar expensive? Discover the real Yangon travel cost in 2026. From $2 Shan noodles to $6 massages, here is how we spent under $50 a day for two.

Hey fellow travelers!
It's Susukkotdari, sharing my latest travel diaries with you.
When I was planning my trip to Yangon, Myanmar, one of my biggest questions was the actual cost of travel.
Before any international trip, researching the local cost of living and setting a realistic budget is always a top priority.
With all the recent talk about currency fluctuations and economic shifts, I wasn't sure what to expect.
But after exploring the city firsthand in 2026, I can confidently say that Yangon is incredibly affordable—way cheaper than I ever imagined!
The Reality of Prices in Myanmar

If there is one dish you absolutely must try in Myanmar, it is Shan Noodles.
Originating from the Shan State in northeastern Myanmar, this dish has become a beloved national staple that you can find on almost every street corner.
While it uses rice noodles—similar to Vietnamese pho—the overall flavor profile is entirely unique.
You can order it either as a comforting noodle soup in a rich broth, or "dry" (sticky) where the noodles are tossed in a savory savory sauce.
The dry version I tried had a wonderful nutty aroma from crushed peanuts and a deeply savory sauce, giving it a comforting, familiar taste reminiscent of a mild Asian sesame noodle dish.
When paired with the side of pickled mustard greens, the acidity cuts right through the richness, elevating the entire dish.
The best part? The spices are very mild, making it incredibly approachable even for those who aren't used to strong Southeast Asian herbs.
Out of all the local dishes I tried during my trip, Shan Noodles is hands-down the most universally appealing and delicious option for international visitors.

My ultimate menu recommendation is:
Dry Shan Noodles + Deep-Fried Tofu + Stir-Fried Morning Glory (Water Spinach).
This combination makes for a incredibly satisfying meal and offers the perfect introduction to Myanmar's culinary culture.
So, how much does a bowl of Shan Noodles actually cost?
At the clean local restaurant I visited, a single bowl was about 10,000 MMK (which is only ~$2).
You can find it on the street for as low as 2,000 MMK (~$0.40), but I'd advise caution with street food to avoid getting a sensitive stomach during your trip!
When converted to USD, the prices are honestly mind-blowing.
Our entire feast of Shan Noodles, fried tofu, and morning glory came out to around 24,000 MMK (~$5).
In a standard mid-range local diner, a bowl of Shan Noodles typically hovers around 4,500 MMK (~$1).
Incredibly Budget-Friendly Travel

In Yangon, you can enjoy full meals, grab coffee at trendy cafes, and buy souvenirs without making a dent in your wallet.
Even after paying for temple entrance fees, taking taxis everywhere, and doing some shopping, we barely spent any money. It felt like our cash was lasting forever!
In fact, traveling as a couple, we struggled to spend even $50 a day combined.
To give you an idea, a plate of Thai fried rice at a clean food court inside a modern shopping mall was only ~$1!
Shan Noodles Price Guide
1. Street Food Stalls
2,000 ~ 3,000 MMK (~$0.40 - $0.60)
2. Popular Local Diners
4,500 MMK (~$1)
3. Upscale Restaurants
11,000 MMK (~$2.50)
Massage Prices in Yangon

The massage prices in Yangon were so incredibly cheap that we ended up going every single day.
A full 90-minute massage cost only about ~$6.
For comparison, that is roughly 40% of what you would pay for a similar massage in Vietnam.
This was easily one of my favorite parts of visiting Yangon!
▶️ How does the cost of living compare to Vietnam?
Personally, I found Myanmar to be significantly cheaper than Vietnam.
While prices vary by item, the overall cost of travel felt like it was about one-third of what you would spend in Vietnam's tourist hubs.
Essential Packing List

I highly recommend packing stomach remedies and anti-diarrhea medication.
While hotels and well-established restaurants maintain great hygiene, street stalls can be hit-or-miss.
It's great to be adventurous with local food, but having backup medicine is a must.
Other essentials include a compact umbrella and comfortable slide sandals.
Sudden rain showers are common during this season, so an umbrella is non-negotiable.

I also highly recommend bringing a small, portable flashlight.
The local power grid can be unstable, and temporary blackouts do happen.
You will notice generators like this parked outside almost every shop.
While the hotels I recommended never lost power thanks to backup generators, smaller guesthouses might experience brief outages.
Eye-Opening Local Realities

Chatting with locals, the most surprising thing I learned was the local wage standard.
The starting monthly salary for a college graduate is only about $110 (roughly ~$102 in relative purchasing value).
Because of this, many young people are incredibly motivated to learn foreign languages, particularly Korean and English, hoping to find employment opportunities abroad.
During my walks, I was surprised by how many locals greeted me warmly in foreign languages—now I understand the drive behind it.
Is Myanmar Safe for Travelers?

Before heading here, the number one question on my mind (and from my family) was:
"Is Myanmar safe to visit?"
While certain border regions remain highly restricted and dangerous, the main tourist destinations—including Yangon, Mandalay, and Bagan—are perfectly safe for tourists!
Rather than feeling like a manufactured tourist trap, Yangon is a city where you can truly immerse yourself in raw, everyday local life.
Between the incredibly low travel costs, the heartwarming hospitality of the locals, and the delicious food, it's a hidden gem.
If you love authentic, off-the-beaten-path solo or independent travel, Yangon is absolutely worth adding to your bucket list.
