If you're planning a trip to Xi'an,
and wondering what the ultimate must-see spots are,
the Terracotta Army and Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum
are undoubtedly the first places that come to mind!
They were at the very top of my bucket list
when putting together my Xi'an itinerary.
However, once I started mapping it out, I realized
the location and transit routes make it quite challenging
to just "pop over" for a quick visit from downtown Xi'an.
At first, I considered doing a DIY trip,
but my friends and I eventually decided to book a
guided day tour—and it was hands down the best decision.
Having studied Chinese history,
seeing these legendary sites in person
while listening to an expert guide
brought the ancient stories to life in a way
that exploring on our own simply couldn't match.

Ask anyone about the most iconic landmark in Xi'an,
and 99% will say the Terracotta Army.
Its historical significance is monumental, and once you step inside,
you immediately understand why it commands such global fame.
Looking at pictures online,
I just thought of it as a famous ruin,
but the sheer scale and overwhelming presence in person
are on an entirely different level.
The Terracotta Army and the Mausoleum
aren't just places you snap a photo of and leave.
The deeper you understand the history behind them,
the more fascinating they become.
If you are traveling to Xi'an in 2026,
this route is an absolute must.
For the most fulfilling experience, I highly recommend
bundling the Mausoleum and Huaqing Palace into the same day.
Initially, I thought a DIY approach would be better.
I liked the idea of controlling my own schedule
and thought I might save a few bucks.
But the more I researched, the more complicated it got.
Where is the best departure point?
How long is the transit time?
How do you navigate the complex ticketing systems?
Managing all the on-the-ground logistics in a foreign country
felt like a massive headache.
Moreover, for historically rich sites like these,
just wandering around blindly is a missed opportunity.
If you're on a tight schedule in Xi'an,
time is your most valuable asset.
Getting lost or confused on-site can easily
derail your entire day.
Booking a tour wasn't just about convenience;
it significantly elevated the quality of our trip!
We met our guide around 8:00 AM,
hopped into a comfortable private vehicle,
explored all the key sites, and were back
in downtown Xi'an by 4:00 PM.

kept things engaging because each location has a distinctly different atmosphere.
I initially wondered if just seeing the warriors was enough,

really helped me appreciate why Xi'an is such a
magical and historically profound city.
It didn't feel like we were just checking off tourist traps;
it felt like tracing the grand narrative of ancient China!
Especially if your Xi'an trip is short,
relying on a well-optimized tour package
is vastly superior to piecing together public transit
routes yourself.

When I first heard of Huaqing Palace,
it seemed like a minor stop compared to the warriors.
But once we arrived, the ambiance blew me away.
The blend of ancient hot springs and palace architecture
offers a perfect mix of scenic beauty and history!
This site is famous for the legendary romance between
Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and his concubine Yang Guifei.
Hearing the dramatic tales from our guide
made the ruins so much more captivating.
It really makes you wonder just how deep the Emperor's love was
to build such an extravagant hot spring complex!
The walking paths are beautifully maintained,
and there are even spots where you can taste the natural spring water.
The entire massive estate serves as the Emperor's resting place,
with the main viewing highlight being the incredible Bronze Chariots.
While it might feel slightly less visually packed than the Terracotta Army,
the sheer size of the grounds is staggering.
Many travelers focus solely on the Terracotta Army
and gloss over the Mausoleum,
but to truly grasp the magnitude of the warriors,
you need to connect them to the Emperor who ordered their creation.
Seeing the Mausoleum helps you comprehend
the absolute power and ego of Qinshihuang.
Listening to our guide explain the historical backdrop
and the ongoing archaeological challenges
reaffirmed my choice to take a tour.
If we had visited on our own,
we probably would have just said, "Wow, it's big," and walked away. Haha.
The ultimate Xi'an essential, the Terracotta Army,
is something I've seen in countless photos and documentaries.
Yet, standing in front of it,
my jaw still dropped at the scale.
Knowing that it is still actively being excavated
right before your eyes is a surreal experience.
It is truly awe-inspiring.
The fact that every single soldier has a completely unique face
and posture is mind-boggling.
Just contemplating the sheer effort it took to uncover
this site gave me goosebumps.
Be warned: the crowds here are intense.
It can get extremely chaotic on the viewing platforms,
so having a guide gracefully lead us to the best vantage points
was an absolute lifesaver.
For first-time visitors to Xi'an,
a bundled tour format like this is
undeniably the smartest way to go!
While you technically could visit Huaqing Palace,
the Mausoleum, and the Terracotta Army separately,
they aren't exactly next door to downtown.
Taking a dedicated tour vehicle
to knock them out in one smooth day trip is ideal.
I didn't opt for the performance add-on,
