If you're planning a trip to Xi'an,

They were at the very top of my bucket list

when putting together my Xi'an itinerary.

However, once I started mapping it out, I realized

the location and transit routes make it quite challenging

to just "pop over" for a quick visit from downtown Xi'an.

At first, I considered doing a DIY trip,

but my friends and I eventually decided to book a

guided day tour—and it was hands down the best decision.

Having studied Chinese history,

seeing these legendary sites in person

while listening to an expert guide

brought the ancient stories to life in a way

that exploring on our own simply couldn't match.

Ask anyone about the most iconic landmark in Xi'an,

and 99% will say the Terracotta Army.

Its historical significance is monumental, and once you step inside,

you immediately understand why it commands such global fame.

Looking at pictures online,

I just thought of it as a famous ruin,

but the sheer scale and overwhelming presence in person

are on an entirely different level.

The Terracotta Army and the Mausoleum

aren't just places you snap a photo of and leave.

The deeper you understand the history behind them,

the more fascinating they become.

If you are traveling to Xi'an in 2026,

this route is an absolute must.

For the most fulfilling experience, I highly recommend

Initially, I thought a DIY approach would be better.

When I first heard of Huaqing Palace,

it seemed like a minor stop compared to the warriors.

But once we arrived, the ambiance blew me away.

The blend of ancient hot springs and palace architecture

offers a perfect mix of scenic beauty and history!

​

​

This site is famous for the legendary romance between

Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and his concubine Yang Guifei.

Hearing the dramatic tales from our guide

made the ruins so much more captivating.

It really makes you wonder just how deep the Emperor's love was

to build such an extravagant hot spring complex!

The walking paths are beautifully maintained,

and there are even spots where you can taste the natural spring water.

Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum

The entire massive estate serves as the Emperor's resting place,

with the main viewing highlight being the incredible Bronze Chariots.

While it might feel slightly less visually packed than the Terracotta Army,

the sheer size of the grounds is staggering.

Many travelers focus solely on the Terracotta Army

and gloss over the Mausoleum,

but to truly grasp the magnitude of the warriors,

you need to connect them to the Emperor who ordered their creation.

Seeing the Mausoleum helps you comprehend

the absolute power and ego of Qinshihuang.

Listening to our guide explain the historical backdrop

and the ongoing archaeological challenges

reaffirmed my choice to take a tour.

If we had visited on our own,

we probably would have just said, "Wow, it's big," and walked away. Haha.

The ultimate Xi'an essential, the Terracotta Army,

is something I've seen in countless photos and documentaries.

Yet, standing in front of it,

my jaw still dropped at the scale.

Knowing that it is still actively being excavated

right before your eyes is a surreal experience.

It is truly awe-inspiring.

The fact that every single soldier has a completely unique face

and posture is mind-boggling.

Just contemplating the sheer effort it took to uncover

this site gave me goosebumps.

Be warned: the crowds here are intense.

It can get extremely chaotic on the viewing platforms,

so having a guide gracefully lead us to the best vantage points

was an absolute lifesaver.

For first-time visitors to Xi'an,
