If you're traveling to Vienna for the first time,
figuring out the best way to get from the airport to the city center

Taxis and Ubers from Vienna Airport are surprisingly expensive.
That's why so many savvy travelers choose
the Vienna City Airport Train (CAT).

The CAT gets you from the airport to the city in just 16 minutes.
It's directly connected to the arrivals hall,
super easy to find, budget-friendly, and incredibly comfortable!
Today, I'm sharing my full 2026 review of the CAT train,
along with my top tips for booking tickets

The Fastest Way to the City: Vienna CAT Train

The absolute fastest way to travel from
Vienna International Airport to the heart of the city
is by hopping on the CAT (City Airport Train).
✔ Direct, non-stop to Wien Mitte station
✔ Travel time is exactly 16 minutes
✔ The easiest option when traveling with heavy luggage
Especially after a long-haul flight,
the last thing you want is a complicated transit experience.
You just want to get to your hotel.
Honestly, I found the CAT Train to be
much more convenient than an airport taxi.
It's cheaper, connected indoors right to the terminal,
and most importantly, it's lightning fast!
How to Book CAT Tickets

While you can definitely buy CAT tickets at the airport machines,
booking them online before your trip is a game-changer.
v Instant mobile QR code delivery
v Secure payment with your preferred credit card
When you land,
you won't have to fumble with foreign credit cards at a kiosk.
You just walk straight to the platform,
which makes the arrival experience so much smoother.

My CAT Train Experience

After grabbing your bags at Vienna Airport,
just follow the massive bright green CAT signs!
They are everywhere, so you literally can't get lost.

Because the signs are so huge and clearly marked,
navigating is a breeze.
Having my mobile QR code ready meant I could walk right in!
It was incredibly stress-free.

The CAT runs every 20 to 30 minutes.
You don't really need to worry about a strict timetable.
Just show up and catch the next one.
When I got to the platform, the train arrived 4 minutes later,
and I hopped right on.
Talk about perfect timing.

A quick tip: You have to press the circular button
on the door to open it.
Don't forget to press it when you're exiting, too!
There's no assigned seating, so you can just
grab any open spot.
I highly recommend sitting near the luggage racks.

The train is surprisingly spacious, so you won't be fighting for seats,
and it's so easy to store your bags.
They even have free Wi-Fi and 220V European outlets!
It's only a 16-minute ride, but it's a very comfortable one.
It absolutely beats taking a cab. Seriously.

As I mentioned, the best seats are right next to the luggage racks.
You always hear stories about luggage theft in Europe,
so just for my own peace of mind, I sat right next to where
I stored my suitcase.
Since you reach the city center in just 16 minutes,
there's really no need for heavy locks or cables.

Once the train departs, a conductor walks through
to scan tickets.
I just showed them the QR code on my phone.
It's so much better than worrying about losing a tiny paper ticket.

Arriving at Wien Mitte station in just 16 minutes
felt almost like magic.
Before I could even finish catching up on my Instagram feed,
we were already in the city center.
With public transit this efficient, there is zero reason to take a taxi.

Because the ride was so incredibly smooth,
I booked it again for my return trip to the airport.
Getting to your departure gate from the city in under 20 minutes
is amazing. Make sure you book your tickets in advance!

If you need to get from Vienna Airport to your hotel,
the CAT is much faster than the bus
and significantly cheaper than a taxi.
I highly, highly recommend it.
It connects directly to the airport terminals, making luggage handling a breeze.
Plus, you can score the best prices online,
so it's a total win-win.
