The Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia
is housed in a majestic building originally built in the 17th and 18th centuries
as the St. Pius V Seminary.
Its iconic blue-tiled dome is the absolute signature of the museum.
In a city where most attractions charge an entrance fee,
this is one of those rare places where admission is completely free.
Even the restrooms are clean and free to use!
Because the museum is so vast,
I highly recommend
setting aside plenty of time to explore it fully.
2. Exploring the Museum
1️⃣
Gothic Altarpieces

Given that Valencia was a major artistic hub
during the Middle Ages,
it boasts an incredibly massive collection
of stunning, elaborate Gothic altarpieces.

They depict various biblical scenes
with exquisite gold-leaf details and intricate craftsmanship
that photos simply cannot do justice.
To me, they almost had a similar feel
to the traditional Buddhist Taenghwa paintings we see in Korea.

Standing in front of these colossal altarpieces,
which feel like entire cathedral sanctuaries transported indoors,
will absolutely take your breath away.
2️⃣
Joaquín Sorolla

To be honest, the ultimate highlight of this museum
is getting to see the works of Joaquín Sorolla
with your very own eyes.

While the collection here might not be quite as massive
as the dedicated Sorolla Museum in Madrid,
From his early works to his later masterpieces,
you can appreciate a wide variety of his artistic styles.

To be honest, I first learned about Joaquín Sorolla
while planning my trip to Valencia,
but the more I looked at his paintings,
the deeper I fell in love with them—
and now, he has officially become my absolute favorite painter.
3️⃣
Antonio Muñoz Degrain

Once you've soaked in the radiant light of Sorolla's works,
the next place you should head is
Antonio Muñoz Degrain's
(Antonio Muñoz Degrain) dedicated gallery
and step right inside.

He was a Valencia-born master painter
who actually had a massive influence on Sorolla.
He was an artist I first discovered here,
but his intense colors and powerful brushstrokes
made him the most memorable painter of my visit.

His works are characterized
by incredibly dramatic colors.
His landscapes capturing the grand majesty of nature
were so stunning that I couldn't tear my eyes away.

Take your time to appreciate his art
in this dedicated exhibition hall, which houses
a vast collection of works that he generously donated.
4️⃣
Other Spanish Masters

Beyond Sorolla and Degrain,
the museum is packed with works from other
legendary figures who shaped Spanish art history.

From Velázquez's self-portrait
to Goya's portraits filled with sharp insight,
and even the mystical colors of El Greco!

I absolutely loved that we could enjoy a lineup
that easily rivals Madrid's Prado Museum,
all for free and in such a peaceful atmosphere.
5️⃣
The Courtyard

As you wander through the exhibition halls,
you'll come across a stunning Renaissance-style
courtyard.
This gorgeous garden, with its vibrant blue walls
and elegant marble columns, was originally part of another palace
but was carefully relocated
right here inside the museum.

The meticulously sculpted marble details
and the serene, peaceful atmosphere blend together,
making it the absolute perfect spot to pause and take a breather.

There's also a lush garden filled with green trees.
With courtyards tucked here and there,
you can quietly admire the artwork,
step out for a breath of fresh air,
and reflect on the pieces that resonated with you.
It made me realize what a massive bonus
having a beautiful garden inside a museum truly is.
