Today,
I want to share the story of the
Turia Gardens (Jardin del Turia),
a place affectionately known as Valencia's giant living room
and the very lungs of the city.
Did you know that this enormous green belt,
stretching an incredible 9km,
was actually once a riverbed?
The river's course was diverted,
and that space was transformed into a magnificent park for its citizens.
I'm excited to introduce you to this place,
brimming with the wisdom and foresight of the people of Valencia.

1. Turia Gardens Basic Information

The Turia Gardens stretch for an incredible 9km,
a park of such immense scale
that it's quite a challenge to see it all in just one day.
If you're short on time,
I highly recommend starting at Alameda Station
and exploring the route heading towards the
City of Arts and Sciences.
This is because it's the most essential section,
where you can experience Valencia's historic bridges
and futuristic architecture
all at once!
2. History
Originally, this area
was where the Turia River flowed,
cutting right through Valencia.
However, after a devastating flood in 1957,
the city government decided to divert the river's course to the outskirts of the city,
leaving them to ponder how to best utilize the now empty riverbed.
There were proposals to build a highway,
but the citizens passionately cried out, "We want a park!"
And as a magnificent result, today's beautiful gardens were born.
Thanks to their collective voice,
Valencia now boasts one of Europe's most remarkable
and enormous urban parks.
3. Exploring Each Section
1️⃣
Western Section
Parque de Cabecera: Where Nature and Romance Flow
At the western end, which marks the park's starting point,
you'll discover both the Bioparc and
the Parque de Cabecera.
This area, with its artificial lake
and gentle hills, creates a harmonious blend,
and it's the place where the park most vividly retains the feeling
of its past as a river.
You can take a delightful ride around the lake on a large swan-shaped pedal boat.
If you visit at sunset, when the light shimmers on the water,
it's truly incredibly romantic.

Central Section
A Variety of Bridges
This central section, connecting to the city center,
is where Valencia's past and present
intersect most beautifully.
It's quite delightful to explore the numerous bridges
that crisscross above the park.
From the stately Real Bridge (Puente del Real),
built in the 16th century,
to the vibrant Bridge of Flowers (Puente de las Flores)
adorned with blossoms,
you'll find tennis courts, football fields, and jogging tracks
bustling with activity in the spaces beneath each bridge.
✅ Palace of Music (Palau de la Música)
The plaza in front of the Palace of Music,
with its magnificent glass dome,
is one of the most vibrant spots in Turia Gardens.
Seeing street dancers practice against the backdrop of the refreshing fountain show,
or people enjoying coffee at the outdoor cafes,
you can't help but feel your spirits lift.

Eastern Section
Gulliver Park and the City of the Future
As you head towards the eastern end of the park,
the scenery becomes increasingly surreal
and futuristic.
✅ Gulliver Park (Parque de Gulliver)
This is a playground shaped like a gigantic Gulliver,
bound to the ground.
Gulliver's clothes and hair are all made into slides,
making it incredibly popular not just with children,
but with adults too!
It's the perfect place to reconnect with your inner child!
✅ City of Arts and Sciences
This is the highlight of a Turia stroll!
The unique architecture, resembling white skeletal structures
floating on blue water,
creates the illusion that you've stepped right into a sci-fi movie.
✅ 5km Jogging Course
And you certainly can't miss the 'Circuito 5K,'
a dedicated running path that stretches across the entire park.
Valencia is renowned as one of Europe's top sports cities,
so you'll witness an incredible energy from runners
from early morning until late at night.
As you cycle or jog along this path,
you'll be captivated by the fresh scents
emanating from the interwoven orange and palm trees.
4. Visitor Tips
✅ Bicycle Rental is a Must
Walking all 9km can be a bit much.
So, rent a bike from one of the many rental shops around the city,
or grab a Valenbisi, the public bicycle service, and
Cycle along the refreshing riverbed path.
It's a flat path with no inclines,
so even beginners can enjoy a delightful ride.
✅ Get Your Picnic Set Ready
Locals, whether it's a weekday or weekend,
bring their mats and sandwiches
to soak up the sun.
Just recently, I whipped up a delicious jamón and cheese sandwich
and headed to the park,
and it felt like I had nothing else to wish for in the world!
5. Wrapping It Up
Turia Garden is incredibly vast,
so I actually explored it over several visits.
If you have the luxury of time,
I highly recommend taking your time to explore
every nook and cranny of Turia Garden.
It's truly a place that's well worth exploring.

Valencia's Turia Gardens operate 24 hours a day with no specific closing days. Admission is also free, allowing anyone to use them freely.
If you're short on time, we recommend a course starting from Alameda station and heading towards the City of Arts and Sciences. This section is a key area where you can encounter Valencia's historical bridges and futuristic architecture all at once.
