Looking for the ultimate day trip from Mexico City?
Here is my honest guide to visiting the natural paradise of Grutas Tolantongo!
Written by Travel Sun
During my recent trip in February 2026, there was one place near Mexico City that I was anticipating more than anywhere else: the natural thermal pools of Grutas Tolantongo.

Once you see photos of these dreamy, turquoise pools built into the side of a lush canyon, there is no turning back. Even though it is an 8-hour round trip from Mexico City, I knew I had to make it happen as a day trip.
Grutas Tolantongo is a spectacular natural canyon and hot spring resort famous for its milky-blue, mineral-rich waters. The cliffside thermal pools, known as Las Pozas (or Paraíso), look incredibly similar to Pamukkale in Turkey, making them a massive hit for travel photography!

There are three main ways to get here from Mexico City:
1) By Public Bus: You have to take a bus from Mexico City to Ixmiquilpan, and then catch another local bus to Tolantongo. It is cheap but takes a long time and is highly restrictive for a day trip.
2) By Taxi / Private Driver: Renting a car or hiring a driver to take you directly there and back.
3) By Guided Group Tour: Joining an organized tour group.
Since we only had one day to spare, we ruled out the public bus immediately because of the tight schedule. Since group tours can get pricey for multiple people, we decided to find travel buddies online and hire a private driver instead.

For our trip in February 2026, we paid 4,300 MXN (approx. $215 USD) total for a private driver, which included toll fees and gas. Split between three of us, it came out to about 1,433 MXN (approx. $72 USD) per person. Prices may have fluctuated slightly since then, but it remains a great option for small groups.
If you are a solo traveler and cannot find companions to share a ride, booking an organized tour is your best bet. Here are the options:
Tour Option | Price | Booking Info |
Premium Guided Tour | ~$154 | |
Local Shared Tour | ~$115 |
Our private driver picked us up at 5:00 AM sharp to beat the notorious Mexico City traffic. By 9:00 AM, we had arrived at the stunning canyon entrance.

Pro tip: The mountain drive in the early morning can be quite chilly, even in February. Be sure to pack a cozy jacket or a poncho to keep warm before you jump in the water!

Along the way, our driver pulled over at a gorgeous scenic overlook to let us snap some photos. Seeing the vast canyon stretching out made the long drive worth it before we even reached the springs.

We finally arrived! The entrance fee was previously 180 MXN (approx. $9 USD) but has recently risen to 230 MXN (approx. $11.50 USD). Keep in mind that prices at popular tourist spots in Mexico have been rising steadily.

Essential Tolantongo Packing List:
Quick-dry towel, waterproof phone pouch, and water shoes or sturdy sandals (absolutely mandatory for the rocky terrain!). There are changing rooms on-site, so bring a change of dry clothes as well.
Having a private driver was a lifesaver here because we could leave our change of clothes and valuables securely locked in the car. If you take public transit, managing your heavy luggage while swimming can be a real hassle.

The best route to explore the park is to start at Paraíso (the cliffside pools), head to Las Grutas (the caves), and finish at El Río (the turquoise river).
Paraíso gets incredibly crowded as the day goes on, so head straight there as soon as you arrive to get those crowd-free photos!
Because we left Mexico City at 5:00 AM, we got to experience these magical pools in peace and quiet before the tour buses rolled in.

It was absolutely breathtaking!

You can spend your free time soaking in different pockets of the cliffside pools. Every single angle is a postcard-perfect shot. Even though these specific pools are man-made to catch the thermal spring runoff, they blend seamlessly into the dramatic canyon landscape.

The water is perfectly warm and soothing. Lying back and looking out over the mountain peaks felt like absolute bliss. If you are visiting Mexico City, you simply cannot skip this experience!

Next, we headed down to Las Grutas (the thermal caves). The moment I saw the brilliant turquoise color of the water emerging from the rock face, my jaw dropped.

If we had come here completely on our own, we probably would have just snapped some photos outside the cave and left. However, our driver—who has visited Tolantongo countless times—actually came inside with us and guided us through the dark, misty interior of the cave!
I thought our driver was just going to drop us off and wait in the parking lot, but his impromptu guided tour of the caves made the experience so much richer. He was absolutely incredible! (If you want his contact details, drop a comment below and I will gladly share them!)

After exploring the cave, we worked up quite an appetite. We had packed some instant noodles with us, and our sweet driver guided us to a local diner that kindly provided hot water for us. Having a warm, comforting meal after hours of swimming was absolute perfection!

To top off our day, we had one last soak in El Río, the gorgeous natural thermal river running through the canyon floor. The mineral content gives the rushing water an unbelievable light blue hue.
Around 3:00 PM, we packed up our things and headed back toward Mexico City. Since the shower facilities at the park are very basic, we did a quick towel-dry and saved our proper showers for when we got back to our hotel.
Our driver went above and beyond for us all day, so we made sure to leave him a generous tip. If you are planning a trip to Mexico, do yourself a favor and add Grutas Tolantongo to your itinerary!
Hiring a private driver was the perfect stress-free choice for us. If you are traveling solo or prefer not to coordinate transportation, I highly recommend booking one of these excellent tour options instead!

It takes about 4 hours one way and 8 hours round trip from Mexico City to Tolantongo. For a day trip, if you depart from Mexico City at 5:00 AM, you can expect to arrive around 9:00 AM.
As of February 2024, the total cost for a taxi tour was 4,300 pesos, which included the driver's entrance fee and fuel. The entrance fee for Tolantongo was 180 pesos at the time, but it appears to have recently increased to 230 pesos.
It is recommended to visit in the order of Paraíso, Grutas, and Río. Paraíso, which is highly popular due to its resemblance to Pamukkale in Turkey, draws the largest crowds, so it is best to head there first as soon as you arrive.
If you take a bus, there is no place to store your luggage. Therefore, it is more convenient to take a taxi tour so you can leave your bags and valuables in the car. Since there are no proper shower facilities after using the hot springs, you will need to just dry off with a towel and shower once you return to your accommodation.
