Hanoi's West Lake (Tây Hồ) takes on a completely different charm as the sun sets.
With crowds of locals and expats strolling along the water,
it is lined with cozy pubs and restaurants perfect for winding down with a cold drink.
During our recent evening out, we stopped by The Republic,
one of the most popular spots to soak in this laid-back lakeside vibe.
We didn't visit for a heavy lunch or dinner this time.
Already quite full from exploring Hanoi's street food scene,
our group of three simply wanted a comfortable place to share a beer and catch up.
So, we ordered a single classic pub snack, a few cold drinks,
and spent a couple of highly relaxing hours chatting away.

The Interior & Vibe

The Republic is highly regarded as one of Tay Ho's premier sports pubs.
The first floor is equipped with several large screens,
drawing in lively crowds of football and sports fans on match days.
We noticed a large expat presence during our visit.
The lighting was warm and inviting, and the background music was kept at a perfect volume
so we didn't have to shout over our drinks. It felt more like a cozy neighborhood local than a rowdy bar.

While West Lake features plenty of drinking establishments,
The Republic has stood the test of time, drawing a steady stream of regulars and travelers alike.
Our Order & Pricing
Since we had already eaten, our group of three ordered just one main snack and a round of drinks.

For three large draft beers and a generous food platter,
the total bill was incredibly reasonable when split among our group.

The Fish & Chips: Surprisingly Stellar!

For our snack, we decided to try the classic Fish & Chips.
The batter was beautifully crispy, while the fish inside remained tender and flaky.
It came served with a generous portion of thick-cut fries,
making it the perfect shareable comfort food to pair with cold beers.
To be completely honest, it tasted even better than some of the versions I've had in London! Let that sink in.
The Perfect Spot for Draft Beer & Conversation
Excellent Sapporo Black on tap

We ordered a couple of Sapporo Blacks and a Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc.
We weren't planning on having a wild night out;
we simply wanted a comfortable space to relax and let our conversation flow.
The Republic provided exactly that. It's the kind of place where
you lose track of time, and suddenly find that hours have slipped away in the best possible way.
It's also a fantastic evening destination, offering a great vantage point for West Lake's night lights.
