Hoan Kiem's Must-Try Eatery in Hanoi
Michelin 1-Star Vietnamese Local Restaurant
Tam Vi (Tầm vị)
Hi everyone, it's Jae-yi!
Today, I'm going to introduce Tam Vi, a must-visit restaurant in Hanoi's Hoan Kiem area that has earned a Michelin Guide, 1 Michelin Star.

For the Vietnam Michelin Guide 2023, the selected establishments
totaled 103 establishments across Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
Among these, establishments awarded 1 Michelin Star
number only four, and Tam Vi is one of them!
The others are either Bib Gourmand spots or Michelin Recommended restaurants, offering delicious food at reasonable prices.
Currently, in Vietnam, a 1 Michelin Star is the highest recognition.
With only four establishments in all of Vietnam (and just three in Hanoi) holding a Michelin Star,
I believe it's definitely a place worth visiting!
A quick shout-out and thanks to my younger sibling for taking me there...

From the moment you see its exterior, it absolutely radiates Vietnamese charm!
It has a distinctly local yet refined atmosphere, making it a great spot
perfect for bringing parents.
While traveling solo or with friends, I'm usually flexible, but
when I bring my parents along,
I always try to find the cleanest and coolest places.
I put in the effort, and I decided that if I ever come to Hanoi with them again, this place
is definitely somewhere I'd have to bring them!

Right at the entrance, proudly displayed, is the Michelin Guide sticker.
And typically, in Vietnamese restaurants or shops,
right as you step inside, you often see altars or offering tables set up,
but here, it was quite grand!

The interior is beautifully adorned, both clean and antique in style,
and even has dedicated seating for groups.
The restaurant is split into the first floor, second floor, and outdoor seating areas.
But with the heat these days, outdoor seating is an absolute no-go...
Hanoi is currently scorching around 37 degrees Celsius (~98°F) in the middle of the day!

The interior design was a delightful blend of vintage-inspired wood and lush greenery.
When we visited during lunchtime, the place was already bustling with people everywhere.
So, these table photos were actually taken after our meal, during their break time when the restaurant was empty.

Hoan Kiem's Must-Try Eatery in Hanoi: Tam Vi's Menu

First things first, let's dive into the menu, shall we?
It's clear from a glance that this is a refined Vietnamese restaurant, radiating a sophisticated vibe,
so naturally, the prices are a bit higher than your average local spot.
Set menus typically range from 700,000 VND to 900,000 VND, which is approximately ~$24 to ~$35.

And Tam Vi has so many menu options!
I tried to snap photos of them all, but it was a bit overwhelming.
So I focused on capturing the dishes I thought you'd be most interested in!
The menu itself is very well-described,
and every single dish photo looked absolutely delicious.
You could check out the descriptions and pick something that truly speaks to your taste,
or even try one of their set menus – that sounds like a great idea too.
First, let me show you the dishes my sibling and I ordered when we visited!
Here are the photos below!

To start, we went for something almost guaranteed to be a hit:
fried spring rolls with pork,
and tofu with tomato sauce.

My sibling raved about the grilled pork from their last visit,
so we definitely had to order the grilled pork!
Next, we decided to try something a bit less familiar to many Koreans:
chayote leaves, locally known as su su in Vietnamese,
prepared as a stir-fried vegetable dish with garlic.
My sibling had tried it a few times in Vietnam
and said it was good, so they encouraged me to give it a taste!

And then, our ordered dishes arrived!
Seriously, every dish was so beautifully presented and clean,
which made me so happy!
The fried spring rolls with pork
are that perfect kind of flavor that everyone is sure to love, no questions asked.
As for the tofu dish with tomato sauce,
that rich, simmering tomato sauce was just incredible!!
If you're a fan of tomato sauce or tofu,
this is a flavor you'll likely fall in love with.

Then came my sibling's highly recommended dish.
Just by looking at it, you can tell it's a type of
seasoned stir-fried pork that Koreans would absolutely adore.
It was seasoned with a fish sauce that gave it a soy sauce-like flavor.
It was a little on the salty side, but undeniably delicious!

Finally, the sticky rice and stir-fried su su arrived.
The sticky rice was wonderfully chewy and had a fantastic texture.
If I ever come here with my mom, who loves lotus leaf rice,
I knew right then that we absolutely *had* to order this rice!
This vegetable, known as chayote buds or su su,
has stems that taste a bit like green beans,
and its leaves resemble pumpkin leaves.
If you've always stuck to morning glory,
I highly recommend giving this su su vegetable a try!
The vegetable dish had a slightly mild flavor,
but when eaten with the seasoned pork,
it was absolutely perfect, and we devoured every last bit!!!

Hanoi Must-Try Restaurant: Tầm Vị Location Near Hoan Kiem
📍 Tầm Vị
4b P. Yên Thế, Văn Miếu, Đống Đa, Hà Nội, Vietnam
Tầm Vị, a must-visit restaurant in Hanoi's Hoan Kiem area,
is located near Hoan Kiem Lake, so
its accessibility to various nearby tourist attractions was excellent.
Hanoi Opera House, St. Joseph's Cathedral,
Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, and many other tourist spots are
just a 10-minute drive or a 20-30 minute walk away.
So, if the weather isn't too hot,
I think it would be great to walk there while exploring the vicinity!
