On my very first night in Hokkaido, I headed straight to Susukino, the legendary downtown district that is an absolute must-visit on any Sapporo itinerary.

Susukino is the beating heart of Sapporo's downtown scene. It is a bustling hub packed with shopping malls, incredible restaurants, lively bars, and retro arcades, offering endless entertainment for travelers.
Once the sun goes down, Susukino transforms into a dazzling wonderland of brilliant neon signs.
The most iconic landmark here is the famous Nikka Whiskey sign. This legendary neon billboard serves as the ultimate photo spot in Susukino, drawing crowds of travelers and locals alike capturing memories under its warm glow.
My visit happened to be the night right before the annual Sapporo Snow Festival. The streets were covered in thick, powdery snow, and with temperatures floating around 25°F, it felt like a true winter wonderland. The contrast between the crisp white snow and the vibrant, glowing neon lights created an incredibly magical atmosphere.
I crossed the street to get a wider perspective of the entire building for some fantastic cityscape photos.
1. Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade
Located just north of Susukino, this historic covered arcade is packed with hundreds of shops, boutiques, and diverse eateries. Because it has a glass canopy roof, you can enjoy shopping and dining here comfortably, completely protected from the winter snow or summer rain.

2. Ganso Ramen Yokocho (Ramen Alley)
Tucked away in the heart of Susukino, this narrow alleyway is the birthplace of Sapporo's legendary miso ramen. It features a collection of tiny, historic ramen stalls, each serving up their own secret recipes. It is a fantastic spot to hop from stall to stall, though you should definitely expect a queue during the peak dinner hours!

Susukino is also a paradise for shopping enthusiasts. For international travelers, there are two massive Mega Don Quijote locations right in the area, perfect for picking up Japanese snacks, cosmetics, and unique souvenirs at great prices.
Visiting Susukino was an absolute highlight of my time in Sapporo. Between the dazzling neon lights, the mouthwatering local food, and the vibrant shopping districts, it perfectly captured the exciting energy of Hokkaido.
