On a recent trip to Sunchang, I found myself with an errand near the Sunchang Police Station. Afterward, I decided to explore the local culinary scene and stumbled upon a true gem.

They're open from 11 AM to 8 PM, but remember they close on Tuesdays. It's always a good idea to call ahead or make a reservation, especially if you're planning a visit on a busy day.
Opening at 11 AM makes it a perfect stop if you're exploring the Damyang area and looking for a delicious lunch spot. It's only about a 15-minute drive from Damyang, offering a peaceful escape from the bustling city center for a hearty meal before you head off to a nearby cafe.

That day, I had an early start with some errands around the Damyang vicinity. Luckily, the parking lot wasn't crowded, which was a pleasant surprise! The spacious parking area suggests it would be convenient even on weekends.

I'd read many reviews before my visit, and while the focus on "healthy ingredients" sounded great, I admit I had a slight apprehension. Would it be too bland? Too vegetable-heavy? My worries were completely unfounded! The food was incredibly delicious, especially the spicy pork (Jeyuk) and the grilled mackerel.

Stepping into Miso Sikdang, the first thing you notice is the beautiful natural light flooding in through the wide windows. It felt more like entering a chic cafe than a traditional Korean restaurant! There are even large tables, seating up to eight guests, making it a fantastic choice for families or larger groups.

I opted for the Lotus Leaf Rice Set, which came with a delightful grilled fish and spicy gochujang bulgogi. You can choose between the fragrant lotus leaf rice or a traditional pot rice, and even if you pick the lotus leaf option, they'll still offer you the comforting scorched rice (nurungji) at the end of your meal!

This is how the table was set for us. We were first presented with lotus leaf pancakes (yeonip-jeon), a fresh salad, and an array of banchan (side dishes) made from various seasonal vegetables.

The owner proudly shared that the black sesame porridge (heukimja-juk) is made fresh every single day. Their passion for the food truly shines through! It was so delicious that I was glad I chose this place for my meal.

Sometimes at traditional Korean set meal restaurants, the side dishes can feel like an afterthought, but not at Miso Sikdang, a true Sunchang culinary gem. Every single banchan was fantastic! Even the simple lettuce salad (sangchu-muchim) was so flavorful that I asked for a refill. The table was truly brimming with clean, healthy, and incredibly tasty side dishes.

I especially loved that many of the side dishes utilized local ingredients, allowing us to truly savor the authentic flavors of Sunchang.

The lotus leaf pancake, wrapped with fresh salad, was a delightful combination. And the aroma of the shiitake mushrooms, which the owner mentioned are grown on oak trees right here, was simply incredible! It truly felt like Miso Sikdang offered a taste of all the best culinary delights Sunchang has to offer.

Before diving into the main meal, the rich and creamy black sesame porridge was the perfect way to warm up my stomach. Its thick consistency was just right for an empty belly, and knowing it was made fresh in-house made it even more satisfying.

And now, for the star of the show: the Lotus Leaf Rice! It's perfectly sized for one adult serving.

Packed with various healthy nuts (sesame seeds, walnuts, pine nuts), dates, and beans, the rice was infused with the subtle, earthy aroma of the lotus leaf – a truly harmonious blend of flavors and textures!

I actually ordered the pot rice, fearing the lotus leaf aroma might be too strong... but I regretted it instantly! Had I known how perfectly balanced the lotus leaf rice was, I would have definitely chosen it. Nevertheless, my pot rice was wonderfully savory, and the fluffy white rice was incredibly satisfying.

I've heard some mixed reviews about the seaweed soup (miyeok-guk), but in my opinion, it tasted like it was made with a refreshing vegetable broth. It was light and pleasant – perhaps not the rich, deep flavor of a meat-based seaweed soup, but absolutely delicious in its own right!

The spicy pork gochujang bulgogi was absolutely spot on – perfectly seasoned and incredibly addictive! If you find yourself wanting more, don't hesitate to ask for a refill. I was so stuffed, though, that I couldn't possibly manage a second helping.

The grilled mackerel was also cooked to perfection, with a wonderfully crispy skin. What I loved most about this place is that it offers so many delicious side dishes and main courses that everyone, from kids to adults, can find something they'll absolutely love.

Of course, the best way to enjoy gochujang bulgogi is wrapped in fresh lettuce (ssam)! Even with just a dollop of ssamjang, the flavors were an explosion in my mouth – truly unforgettable!
The lotus leaf rice, with its medley of nuts, was incredibly clean-tasting and fragrant!

A spoonful of fluffy white rice paired with a flaky, thick piece of grilled mackerel felt like all my worries melted away. I made sure to finish every last grain of rice – it was that good!
Even with the lotus leaf rice, you're still offered nurungji (scorched rice) at the end. So, if you're still feeling a bit peckish after your meal, you can enjoy a comforting bowl to round things off!

After such a satisfying meal, I decided to skip a separate cafe visit and instead opted to finish my experience with a soothing lotus leaf tea on the second floor. It felt like the perfect, authentic conclusion to a fantastic meal at this Sunchang gem.

It was wonderful to sit on the second-floor terrace for a moment and enjoy the breeze. While it might get quite warm in the peak of summer, it's an absolutely delightful spot during the spring and autumn months, like now in September 2026.

If you enjoyed your meal as much as I did, you'll be happy to know that Miso Sikdang also offers their lotus leaf rice and dried yellow croaker (bori-gulbi) for delivery! They come perfectly vacuum-sealed, making it super convenient to order and enjoy their delicious food even after your trip.
Whether you're visiting Sunchang itself or looking for a fantastic restaurant near Damyang, Miso Sikdang is a highly recommended stop. It's conveniently located about a 40-minute drive from Jeonju and just 15 minutes from Damyang.
