St. Stephen's Cathedral Vienna Review 2026: South Tower & Roof Mosaic

Following our last adventures at Schönbrunn Palace and Hofburg Palace, I'm thrilled to share my experience at St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom), the iconic landmark that immediately catches your eye in the heart of Vienna.

While those palaces sit on the city's outskirts or in their own sprawling districts, Stephansdom is truly smack-dab in the city center. It's practically impossible to plan a Vienna itinerary without including it!

1. St. Stephen's Square: My First Glimpse of the Cathedral

St. Stephen's Cathedral is located in Vienna's 1st District, just a two-minute walk from the U1 or U3 Stephansplatz subway station.

Stepping out of the subway station, you'll immediately spot its Gothic spires peeking out between buildings. Walking into the square and watching the cathedral's silhouette grow larger was quite an impressive sight.

The square was bustling with people, and several vendors were offering horse-drawn carriage tours, making it clear this is one of Vienna's busiest hubs.

The cathedral itself is free to enter, so I took my time admiring the exterior first, without any pressure.

2. The South Tower Viewpoint: Conquering 343 Steps

When you think of St. Stephen's Cathedral, the South Tower viewpoint is an absolute must-do. After purchasing a ticket at the entrance, you begin the ascent up a narrow spiral staircase. It's barely wide enough for one person, so if you meet someone coming down, you'll have to squeeze past each other!

The stone walls felt smooth from centuries of hands touching them, and I found myself pausing occasionally, gripping the iron handrails to catch my breath.

Later, I discovered there are exactly 343 steps. I'd tried counting them a few times on the way up but gave up – knowing the actual number certainly explained why it felt like such a workout!

As of September 2026, the official adult price is 8 Euros, and they only accept cash, so make sure to bring some Euros with you.

3. Looking Up at the Spire: Why the Low Angle Works Wonders

Standing on the square below, the spire is so tall it barely fits into a camera frame.

The South Tower was completed in 1433 and stands approximately 446 feet tall. Imagine how monumental that must have seemed when it was first built!

Locals affectionately call this South Tower 'Steffl,' and for centuries, it held the title of the tallest structure in Vienna.

Taking photos from a low angle really captures the spire's dramatic ascent towards the sky. I spent a good while standing in the middle of the square, gazing up and snapping pictures.

4. The Golden Cross atop the Spire & The Story of the Roof Mosaic

If you look closely at the very top of the spire, you'll spot a gleaming golden cross.

It's hard to see from a distance, but zooming in reveals its intricate craftsmanship. I later learned that the cathedral's true iconic feature isn't just the spire, but its incredible roof.

As you can see in the thumbnail photo, the entire roof is covered in vibrant, colorful ceramic tile mosaics.

The south side of the roof features the double-headed eagle, a symbol of the Habsburg dynasty, while the north side displays the coats of arms of Vienna and Austria.

I was touched to learn that the original roof was destroyed by fire during World War II and later restored through donations from Viennese citizens. It's clearly more than just a decoration; it holds a special, profound meaning for the people of Vienna.

5. The Spire Against the Clouds & What's Next

After descending the steps, I circled the square again, this time capturing the spire against a backdrop of fluffy clouds.

The clear weather made the spire's dark, pointed silhouette stand out beautifully against the clouds, resulting in some truly striking photos.

St. Stephen's Cathedral feels like a perfect fit for any Vienna itinerary, whether you visit it on your first day or save it as a grand finale.

After my visit, I made my way towards the nearby Kärntner Straße.

Travel Tip: The SKY Bar on Kärntner Straße

While strolling down Kärntner Straße, which runs right next to St. Stephen's Cathedral, I stumbled upon a 'SKY Bar' sign on a building's rooftop.

It's apparently a spot where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the cathedral from above. However, you'll need to make a reservation in advance and specifically request a terrace table in your comments.

I actually visited the SKY Rooftop Bar on the evening of my seventh day and enjoyed the stunning night view of St. Stephen's Cathedral from there.
