When you're wandering around Spain
during the day,
you'll see so many people
enjoying a cold beer at outdoor terrace tables.
Since there are so many different types of beer here,
before buying some at the local supermarket,
I kept a close eye on what the locals were ordering
and tried a bunch of them myself!
Spanish beer—
which can actually be cheaper than bottled water!
Here are six fantastic local beers you have to try.

1. Spanish Beer Guide
1️⃣
Mahou
Mahou Cinco Estrellas

Mahou is
a household favorite that you'll spot
everywhere you go in Spain.
Thanks to its wonderfully balanced flavor profile,
it pairs beautifully with almost any tapas.
If you choose the iconic red label,
Cinco Estrellas (Five Stars),
you'll get the absolute classic lager experience.
2️⃣
Estrella Galicia
Estrella Galicia

Estrella Galicia was
the beer I saw most frequently
on the tables of locals
enjoying a drink out on the terraces.

They say it's the brand
that Spanish locals most often vote
as their absolute favorite beer.
Compared to other lagers,
it has a wonderfully crisp hop bitterness
and a richer, deeper flavor.
I tried both the draft and the canned versions,
and surprisingly, the can tasted even better to me! 🤔
3️⃣
Turia
Turia

Turia is
the signature beer of the Valencia region.
Brewed with toasted malt,
it pours a beautiful reddish-amber color.

Compared to your standard lager,
it has a much toastier, more robust character,
making it an incredible match for rich tapas
like jamón or aged cheeses.
4️⃣
Estrella Damm
Estrella Damm

As Barcelona's iconic beer,
it's affectionately known as the "Beer of the Mediterranean."
It's actually one of our absolute favorites!

With its crisp carbonation and clean finish,
it cuts through the richness of seafood dishes
like paella or gambas al ajillo perfectly.
5️⃣
Amstel
Amstel

Amstel is
another beer you'll constantly see alongside Estrella Galicia
on the tables of locals in Valencia
as one of the most popular choices.

Although it's originally a Dutch brand,
it's highly popular and widely enjoyed
in eastern Spain, including the Valencia region.
It has a light and smooth flavor overall,
making it easy and refreshing to drink like juice,
even for those who aren't big drinkers.
6️⃣
Cruzcampo
Cruzcampo

Cruzcampo is
the ultimate icon of Seville in southern Spain.
It truly shines
when served ice-cold.
Its signature bitter and dry finish
pairs absolutely perfectly with Spain's sizzling hot weather.

This is also one of our absolute favorites! 🩷
2. Pro Tips

🍺 Choosing the Right Glass Size 🍺
Caña is
the smallest glass size (around 200ml).
Because you can drink it quickly before it gets warm,
it's the top choice for locals.
Tubo is a tall, straight glass,
while Tanque or Jarra
refers to a large 500ml beer mug.

🍋 Have you heard of Clara? 🍋
It's my absolute favorite—
a refreshing lemon beer
that mixes beer and lemonade.
Since the alcohol content is quite low,
I highly recommend it to anyone who isn't a strong drinker!

🍺 Supermarket Shopping Tip 🍺
Even if they are bundled in a 6-pack,
you can usually buy them individually!
There are occasional exceptions,
but in most cases, you can just tear the cardboard packaging
or pop one out
to purchase it singly.

Besides the beers introduced above,
locals also drink brands like
Ambar and 1906 a lot,
so if you spot these at the supermarket,
be sure to give them a try!
If you prefer a rich, strong beer,
I highly recommend 1906!
3. Wrapping Up

Sitting at an outdoor terrace under the warm Spanish sun
and sipping a cold glass of beer
will surely become one of your happiest memories from the trip.
Since most cans cost less than €1,
you can easily enjoy a wide variety of beers on a budget.
Which beer are you most excited to try?

Or, if you have already found your own
all-time favorite beer in Spain,
