Looking for a unique midday cultural experience in Sejong? Our review covers everything from booking tickets to navigating the free seating at the Sejong Lunch Concert.
Having recently moved to Sejong, I was on the lookout for easygoing cultural activities to enjoy during the week. That's when I stumbled upon the Sejong Lunch Concert!
After experiencing it firsthand, I can confidently say it's a fantastic way to make the most of your lunch hour.

However, I did encounter one minor hiccup. While the concert operates with open, free seating, there was a moment of confusion that any first-time visitor could easily experience.
In this post, based on my personal experience, I'll walk you through how to book tickets for the Sejong Lunch Concert and share my full review, including what to watch out for.

The Sejong Lunch Concert is held in the 1st-floor lobby of the Sejong Arts Center. It's designed as a midday performance where you can enjoy an hour of music with light refreshments.
Since all seating is open, if you're hoping for a prime spot or want to avoid any unexpected inconveniences, I highly recommend arriving at least 30 minutes before the concert begins.
Tickets for the Sejong Lunch Concert can be purchased through the official Sejong Arts Center website or NOL Ticket.
NOL Ticket charges a 10% booking fee, so I opted to purchase my tickets directly from the Sejong Arts Center website.
While individual tickets are ~$14 per person, you can save roughly 40-45% by purchasing 2-person or 3-person packages.

Unlike traditional concert halls, the Sejong Lunch Concert is a 'brunch concert' held in the lobby, meaning you're welcome to enjoy light food and drinks during the performance.
If you've brought your own meal, I suggest arriving when doors open at 11:00 AM to finish eating before the music begins.

You can bring a simple packed lunch, like a bento box or a sandwich, or grab a drink from the cafe on the first floor. I picked up a decaf coffee there myself!

While the concert itself was truly wonderful, I had an unexpected and rather awkward encounter before it even started.
The Sejong Lunch Concert is advertised as having open, free seating. I arrived about 20 minutes before the performance, only to find most of the seats already taken.
I spotted an empty seat and naturally sat down, waiting for the show to begin. A few minutes before start time, someone approached me and asked, "Who are you?"
I was completely taken aback, unsure what was happening. I simply replied that I was a concertgoer.
To my surprise, the person told me I couldn't sit there! 😠 When I mentioned it was advertised as free seating, they seemed a bit flustered but insisted I couldn't stay.
With other people looking on, I felt too uncomfortable to argue further and decided to stand up.

The problem was, finding another empty seat was difficult. I ended up explaining the situation to a concert staff member and asked where I could sit.
The staff member clarified that the seat I had chosen was actually reserved for a group and directed me to another available spot.

Ultimately, I ended up sitting in the very front row, which was great for viewing the performance. However, the initial awkwardness kept replaying in my mind throughout the concert, leaving a bit of a sour taste.
If a concert is advertised as having free seating, but there are specific areas reserved for groups, I believe these should be clearly marked in advance so general attendees can easily identify them.

To be told off for simply sitting in what appeared to be an empty seat at a free-seating concert, with that person's stern expression, was incredibly mortifying.
Despite the excellent performance, this experience prevented it from being an entirely positive memory.
If there are group seating areas for future concerts, I sincerely hope this aspect will be improved.

The performance I attended featured the Lee Han-gyeol Trio.
The concert description mentioned popular music, but the actual performance, centered around a harmonica accompanied by piano and percussion, offered a surprisingly diverse and rich atmosphere. The program included many familiar tunes.
They played OSTs from Ghibli animations like Howl's Moving Castle and Castle in the Sky, as well as film scores by Hans Zimmer and Joe Hisaishi. They also included beloved Korean melodies, making for a selection that anyone could enjoy without feeling overwhelmed.
It was a perfect fit for a weekday lunch hour, creating an inviting ambiance where even those less familiar with music could comfortably appreciate the performance.

The Sejong Lunch Concert is especially recommended for:
🎹 Those looking for some peaceful personal time.
🎹 Office workers who want to enjoy some culture during their lunch break.
🎹 Couples seeking an indoor date idea in Sejong.
🎹 Anyone who wants to enjoy classical and film music without feeling intimidated.
On the other hand, if you prefer assigned seating or expect a perfectly quiet concert environment, it's good to be aware of the relaxed, open-lobby nature of this performance before you visit.
In addition to the Lunch Concert, the Sejong Arts Center also hosts the Yaminrak Concert.
If visiting during the weekday afternoon is challenging, the evening performances, starting at 7:00 PM, could be a great alternative. I recommend checking their schedule as well!
