Sapporo Weather 2026: What to Pack for September & October
Heading to Sapporo in September or October 2026? Get the real scoop on autumn weather and exactly what to pack for a comfortable trip to Sapporo, Biei, and Otaru!

When I was planning my trip to Sapporo for the second week of September this year, I did my research. I checked the Japanese weather forecasts and carefully planned my outfits based on the general advice I found online.
Most people described the weather as 'crisp' or 'mildly cool,' so I packed clothes similar to what I'd wear in early to mid-October back home.
However, when I actually got there, the weather was a bit different from what I expected!

I traveled to Sapporo, Biei, and Otaru from September 16-19, 2026, for a 3-night, 4-day adventure. Here's a breakdown of my actual experience with the weather and what I recommend you pack to be perfectly comfortable!
Sapporo September Weather: My Recent Experience
What was it like last week?

Date | Weather | High | Low | Precipitation |
09/16/2026 (Wed) | Sunny | 76.5°F | 56.1°F | None |
09/17/2026 (Thu) | Sunny | 79.0°F | 58.3°F | None |
09/18/2026 (Fri) | Sunny | 76.6°F | 57.2°F | None |
09/19/2026 (Sat) | Cloudy | 73.9°F | 59.2°F | Light Rain |
For three out of the four days I spent in Sapporo, the skies were incredibly clear and bright!

On my last day, a Saturday, it was a bit cloudy, but we didn't get much rain at all.
Sapporo September Weather: What Should You Pack?
I initially thought Sapporo would be cooler than typical autumn weather back home, given its northern location.

However, during the day, especially directly under the sun, it felt surprisingly warm!

If you're visiting Otaru or especially Biei, where there's very little shade, you'll be comfortable in a t-shirt and light pants during the day. It wasn't hot, but definitely pleasant enough for short sleeves.
I actually brought two of my favorite leather jackets, thinking it was autumn, but they just added unnecessary weight to my luggage. It was too warm to wear them!
That said, as soon as you step into the shade, the breeze feels wonderfully cool and refreshing.
It's quite similar to autumn weather in many places, isn't it?

On sunny days, the sunlight can be very strong, so I highly recommend bringing sunglasses, a hat, a parasol (which can double as an umbrella), and plenty of sunscreen. Don't underestimate the UV rays!
You'll definitely need a light jacket for the evenings!
I brought a thin jacket and a windbreaker, which were perfectly sufficient.
For trips in September through early October, I recommend at most a light down jacket.
If you're planning to visit from mid-October onwards, you'll want to pack something warmer!
If you're preparing your outfits and essentials for Sapporo this week or anytime soon,
Make sure to pack one or two windbreakers, and don't forget a parasol that can also serve as an umbrella!
I only brought one windbreaker, and after enjoying delicious yakiniku and jingisukan for dinner, it ended up smelling quite a bit. I wished I had packed an extra one!
To summarize my packing advice:
① For those who primarily walk around during the day and spend evenings indoors at restaurants:
→ A t-shirt plus one light outer layer is usually enough!
② If you get cold easily or have outdoor evening/night activities planned:
→ Pack long sleeves and bring a couple of light outer layers to be safe.
③ For those planning a trip from late September to October:
→ It will get noticeably cooler! Be sure to pack at least a light down jacket or similar.
I hope this guide helps you decide what to pack for your Sapporo trip in September and October!
