I recently returned from a trip to Sapporo, a city in Japan's Hokkaido region often touted for its cool summers. My visit was right after a significant rainfall, and what I realized was quite surprising: Sapporo can actually be pretty warm, and the temperature swings between day and night are quite noticeable!
Today, I'm excited to share insights into Sapporo's July and August weather, along with essential packing tips and a recommended travel itinerary for anyone planning a summer getaway to this beautiful city in 2026.
July & August Sapporo Weather
Having recently explored Sapporo, I can tell you that July feels quite warm, similar to summer conditions in many parts of the world. Expect high humidity and strong UV rays, which can lead to a lot of sweating during the day. However, as evening approaches, the air cools down significantly, often becoming quite crisp and even a bit chilly.
While rain is common, it's usually brief showers or light drizzles that pass quickly. After the rain, the sun can be intensely strong, so packing sunscreen and a portable umbrella (which can double as a parasol) is absolutely essential.
Hokkaido's summer is relatively short, so by the time August rolls around, the weather starts to mellow out. Average low temperatures hover around 66°F (19°C) and highs around 81°F (27°C), making it noticeably cooler than many other summer destinations. Even in August, an umbrella is a must-have, and a light cardigan or jacket is recommended to handle the daily temperature fluctuations.
What to Wear
During my trip, I mostly wore sleeveless dresses, short-sleeved tops with skirts, or shorts. In the evenings, when the temperature dropped, I simply added a light cardigan. My husband, on the other hand, wore short-sleeved shirts with long jeans or shorts. He found the long pants quite uncomfortable due to the high humidity, so I highly recommend sticking to shorter lengths for bottoms!
Recommended Travel Itinerary
This was my first time visiting Sapporo, so I stuck to a classic itinerary. Here’s how I spent my 3-night, 4-day trip, which I highly recommend for first-timers!
Day 1
On our first day, we took a limousine bus from New Chitose Airport and got off at Odori Park Station. While the JR rapid train always drops you at Sapporo Station, the bus offers the flexibility to choose your stop, which is great if your accommodation is near Susukino or Odori Park.
At Odori Park, we admired Sapporo's main landmark, the Sapporo TV Tower, and snapped some photos.
Afterward, we briefly explored the nearby Clock Tower and Hokkaido Government Office before heading to the Nikka sign for another photo op. This area is conveniently located near many popular restaurants serving local specialties like Genghis Khan (grilled lamb) and soup curry, so you'll likely pass it on your way to lunch.
Next, we took an Uber to the Sapporo Beer Museum. Admission to the museum is free, but tasting is extra. We paid around ~$8 for three glasses. Honestly, there isn't much to see in the museum itself; we mainly went for the beer tasting!
Summer in Sapporo means one thing: the Beer Festival! We returned to Odori Park to soak in the festive atmosphere. I think I basically only drank beer that entire day! The Beer Festival in Odori Park typically runs until mid-August. If you're visiting around August 13th, 2026, make sure to check it out!
Day 2
On our second day, we ventured out to Asahikawa to see the lavender fields at Shikisai no Oka. We visited in late July, and about half the lavender was already past its prime. If seeing the vibrant lavender fields is a priority, aim for early July!
We opted to rent a car for our exploration, but if you're traveling with parents or prefer a more relaxed pace, a guided tour might be a better option.
You absolutely must try the lavender ice cream here! While some say the lavender flavor is an acquired taste, I personally found it incredibly delicious and unique. My husband tried the melon ice cream, but even he admitted the lavender one was better!
Next, we visited the Blue Pond and Shirahige Waterfall. These two spots are quite close to each other, making them a popular pair to visit. The Blue Pond attracts many tourists, but to be honest, there isn't a huge amount to see beyond its striking blue hue. It’s certainly a beautiful sight, but manage your expectations. The ice cream sold here is also delicious, with a refreshing, almost soda-pop flavor!
Day 3
Our third and final day was all about relaxation at a traditional ryokan! It was wonderful to unwind in an onsen (hot spring) and soothe away the fatigue from our travels. While it was a perfect way to end the trip, it also made me sad to think it was almost over. The Jozankei area is particularly famous for its numerous ryokans.
While Sapporo is renowned for its snowy winters, I wholeheartedly recommend a summer trip too! Especially if you visit in August when the weather becomes truly pleasant, it's an experience not to be missed!

In July, Sapporo is hot and humid with strong UV rays, similar to Korea. The nights can be cool or slightly chilly, leading to significant temperature differences between day and night. For clothing, sleeveless dresses or short-sleeved tops with skirts/shorts are recommended. It's also a good idea to bring a light cardigan for the evenings.
Admission to the Sapporo Beer Museum is free, but beer tasting is paid, costing around ~$8 for three glasses. The Beer Festival held at Odori Park runs until late on August 13th, so you can keep that in mind when planning your visit.
In late July, the lavender at Shikisai no Oka was about halfway wilted, so it's best to visit quickly if you want to see the lavender. The author used a rental car, but if you're traveling with your parents, using a tour is recommended.
When traveling from New Chitose Airport to Odori Park Station, a limousine bus is recommended. The JR Rapid Airport train only stops at Sapporo Station, so if your destination is near Susukino or Odori Park, a bus that allows you to choose your drop-off point will be more convenient.
