Your Essential Guide to Sapporo Subway Routes
Credit Cards, Passes, and Apple Pay
When I first visited Japan, figuring out the subway system was one of the most confusing parts of the trip. Even in Osaka, which many say isn't too complicated, I found myself a bit lost!
However, the Sapporo subway system is significantly simpler than in other regions, making it super easy for first-time visitors to get the hang of it quickly.
Sapporo Subway Map Overview
The Sapporo subway map consists of just three main lines: the Namboku Line, the Tozai Line, and the Toho Line. All three lines intersect at Odori Station, making it the central transfer hub for easy navigation.
🟢 Namboku Line: This is the most crucial line for tourists, passing through key areas like JR Sapporo Station, Odori Park, and Susukino. You'll likely use this one the most!
🟠 Tozai Line: Primarily used when heading to Shiroi Koibito Park, a popular spot for souvenir shopping and delicious treats.
🔵 Toho Line: Most travelers use this line to reach Sapporo Dome, home to sports events and concerts.
Fares & Passes
Basic fares start from 210 JPY for adults and 110 JPY for children. The fare increases with the distance traveled, so longer journeys will cost more.
Unlike some other Japanese cities that offer extensive multi-day passes, Sapporo primarily offers a 1-Day Pass for its subway system. This pass costs 830 JPY for adults and 420 JPY for children.
If you plan to use the subway on a Saturday, Sunday, public holiday, or during the New Year's holiday period (December 29th to January 3rd), you can purchase the special Donichika Holiday Pass. This pass offers a slightly cheaper 1-day fare at 520 JPY for adults and 260 JPY for children, making it a great deal for weekend explorers!
How to Purchase Tickets
If you're not using a credit card, Apple Pay, or an IC transportation card, you'll need to purchase a ticket from a ticket vending machine using cash.
Simply check the fare to your desired destination on the route map displayed above the machines, then press the corresponding fare button on the machine to receive your ticket.
Keep in mind that these ticket vending machines typically do not accept credit cards. You'll need either cash or an IC card. There are usually IC card recharging machines located right next to the ticket vending machines if you need to top up your card.
How to Ride the Subway
Good news! These days, many Japanese subway systems, including Sapporo's, accept credit cards directly at the gates. During my trip to Sapporo, I didn't buy a single paper ticket; I simply tapped my credit card for every ride!
However, not all gates are equipped for credit card tapping. Look for the gates that have a dedicated reader for Visa credit cards, as pictured above. That's where you'll tap your card.
A quick guide to the gate colors:
Blue indicates the reader for IC transportation cards (like Suica or Pasmo).
Yellow is for inserting paper tickets.
Pink is where you'll tap your credit card!
Apple Pay Convenience
Curious if Apple Pay worked, I tried it out, and it did! Of course, this only works with an IC card or Visa card registered in your Wallet app, not a local T-Money card if you happen to have one.
The thought of getting around Japan without needing my physical wallet, just my phone, is incredible! If you're an iPhone user, I highly recommend using Apple Pay for a seamless subway experience in Sapporo. It's a game-changer!💚
To go to Shiroi Koibito Park, take the Tozai Line. To go to Sapporo Dome, you'll mainly use the Toho Line.
