Exploring Japan's vibrant cities often means navigating with luggage, and thankfully, Japanese subway stations are incredibly well-equipped with coin lockers, making it easy to store your bags no matter which station you're at.
Recently, I found myself with some time to kill before my next train and decided to store my luggage at Odori Station. However, I later discovered that Sapporo Station is actually the superior choice for baggage storage. It boasts a much larger capacity, more available lockers, and, most importantly, almost all of them accept card payments (many at Odori Station are cash-only).

Sapporo Station Luggage Lockers

You honestly won't have trouble finding the lockers at Sapporo Station; they're incredibly prominent once you step inside. You practically can't miss them! While they are spread throughout the station, you'll find a higher concentration near the North Exit.
I initially heard that the JR section of Sapporo Station might be too crowded with tourists to find an available locker, which is why I specifically went to Odori Station. But let me tell you, that information was completely off-base!
The sheer number of lockers here is incredible; you'll almost certainly find an open spot. Plus, with many hotels now offering early check-in or luggage holding services, the demand for station lockers isn't as overwhelming as you might expect.
You'll find a wide range of sizes, from small to medium, large, and even extra-large. The extra-large ones are massive—big enough to fit a set of golf clubs!
Prices vary depending on the locker size, ranging from ~$2 to ~$5 per use (using an approximate 1 USD = 150 JPY rate for 2026).
At Sapporo Station, you'll be happy to know that both cash and card payments are accepted. Major credit cards like Visa and Mastercard are typically good to go.
If you opt for cash, remember that only ~$1 coins are accepted. If you only have larger denominations like ~$3 or ~$7 bills, you'll need to find a change machine nearby to break them down.
Odori Station Luggage Lockers

Odori Station also has a good number of luggage lockers, comparable to Sapporo Station. However, unlike Sapporo, they aren't concentrated in one main area; instead, they're scattered throughout the station.
Just follow the "Coin Locker" signs, and you'll easily spot them in various spots throughout the subway station.
Many of the light purple lockers are older models, which means they won't accept your standard credit cards. You'll need to pay with cash, and again, only ~$1 coins are accepted here.
A quick heads-up: once you insert coins, they won't be returned, so make sure you have the correct amount!
If you're relying solely on credit cards, you'll need to hunt for the newer generation of lockers. I actually spent a good 30 minutes searching for them! There are very few new models directly within the subway station itself. Your best bet is to head to the underground shopping arcade connected to Odori Station.
Look for "Aurora Town" (オーロラタウン) and make your way there. You'll find the underground shopping street on the first basement level.
These white lockers are the newer models you're looking for! You'll find them scattered throughout the underground shopping arcade's pathways. The prices are the same as those inside the subway station.
Just a heads-up: there aren't as many of these newer lockers, so availability might be limited. Each locker bank usually has a map indicating where other lockers are located, which is super helpful!
Good news for travelers with larger bags: a 28-inch suitcase will comfortably fit into these newer, larger lockers. The older models typically won't accommodate them.
I opted for the largest size available, and it cost me ~$5 for 12 hours of storage.
Interestingly, the specific locker I used, which was one of the newest models, was unique in that it *only* accepted credit cards—cash payment wasn't an option. So, always be prepared with a card!
However, within the same underground arcade, you can also find other lockers that are cash-only and a bit cheaper (~$4). So, you can choose based on your preference and what payment method you have readily available.
A great feature of these cash-only lockers in the arcade is that they often come with their own built-in coin changers, saving you the hassle of hunting for one!

A 28-inch suitcase might not fit into the older lockers at Odori Station. Since a 28-inch suitcase is large enough to fit comfortably in the new lockers, it is recommended to use the white new lockers in the underground shopping mall.
When paying with cash for lockers at Sapporo Station, only 100-yen coins can be inserted. If you only have 500-yen or 1,000-yen notes, you will need to use a nearby coin exchange machine to convert them into 100-yen coins.
