Yurakusoan: A Recommended Ryokan in Sapporo Jozankei
As winter approaches,
many of you might be planning a Sapporo hot spring trip.
I recently visited Yurakusoan in Sapporo's Jozankei area,
and it had everything from private baths to reservable baths,
all so well-equipped.
It was truly a healing getaway!
Especially for those traveling with parents,
it's a wonderful trip to treat them.
If you're planning a trip to Sapporo,
I highly recommend Yurakusoan in Jozankei.
1. Location

Yurakusoan in Sapporo Jozankei
is located about a 40-minute drive
from Sapporo city center.
I traveled by rental car,
but if you don't have one, you can use the shuttle bus.

The shuttle bus departs daily from Sapporo Station
at 2:30 PM.
When returning from the hotel to Sapporo city center,
it leaves at 10:30 AM!
Since it's on a first-come, first-served basis,
be sure to book your shuttle bus quickly once your room reservation is complete. :)

2. Check-in

Check-in is from 3:00 PM,
and check-out is at 11:00 AM.
Yurakusoan is a newer establishment,
so instead of a traditional ryokan with old Japanese architecture,
it's built in a more hotel-like style.
However, it's cleaner than a traditional ryokan.
But don't worry, all the hot springs use authentic thermal water!

In fact, for those visiting in the cold winter,
ryokans built in the old wooden house style
often have chilly rooms.
But Yurakusoan, with its comfortable hotel-style building,
was wonderfully warm.
3. Quadruple Room

Jozankei Yurakusoan offers a variety of rooms,
from twin rooms and deluxe rooms perfect for two people,
to quadruple rooms ideal for a family of four.

My family and I stayed in a quadruple room,
and the spacious room allowed us to relax comfortably.

Upon opening the door and stepping inside,
you'll find a clean corridor-style layout.
There's a small bedroom near the entrance.

As you head further inside,
you'll find a combined living and sleeping area,
perfect for four people to gather and chat,
and spacious enough to spread out your luggage.

The large windows offer a fantastic view too.
When I visited, it was deep winter,
and there was a lot of snow, so the snowy landscape
was absolutely beautiful – a memory I cherish! Haha.

The bedding was incredibly fluffy and cozy,
so after a relaxing hot spring bath,
it was absolutely perfect for a deep, sweet sleep.

As a welcome service,
they provide delicious snacks
that are perfect for munching on.
Four bottles of water are provided as standard,
and if you open the drawer, you'll find coffee and tea leaves
ready for you to brew your own beverages.

Inside the closet,
you'll find yukata robes for each person,
along with baskets and towels
that are perfect for carrying to the hot springs.

The restroom is located near the entrance.
Since it's a quadruple room for four people,
the bathroom is quite spacious!

There are two sinks,
and most essential amenities are fully stocked.
Additionally, disposable amenities are available in the lobby,
so you can pick up anything else you might need.

And here's a fantastic feature: Jozankei Yurakusoan
has a hinoki bath in every single room!
From spring to autumn, you can gaze at the lush green
trees while you soak,
and in winter, watch the snow fall,
allowing you to enjoy a relaxing hot spring experience
privately and comfortably right in your room.
4. Facilities and Amenities

You know how it is when you're on a fantastic resort getaway, right? 😉
You've got to make the most of every moment! I swear, except for when I was actually sleeping,
I was constantly on the go here.
There's just so much to explore, so much delicious food to try,
and so many hot springs to soak in!

On the first floor, you can enjoy refreshing drinks
like tea and coffee.

At the restaurant in front of the grand public bath on the basement first floor,
you can grab ice cream, soft drinks, and more.
And from 10-11 PM, you can even enjoy free soba! 😉
I was so full from dinner that I couldn't try it, but if you need a late-night snack
after your onsen soak, you absolutely HAVE to try this!!

And for all ryokan guests, there's complimentary yukata rental!
You can pick your favorite design from the selection next to the reception –
they have so many beautiful options.
It was perfect for taking photos or wearing to breakfast and dinner :)
5. Onsen (Hot Springs)
The Grand Public Bath

Sapporo Jozankei Yurakusoan boasts two types of hot springs.
There's the grand public bath, separated for men and women.
And for a truly special experience, there are private baths (known as 'zensetang' or 'chartered baths')
that you can enjoy exclusively with your group!

The public bath wasn't as crowded as I expected, so I could really relax and enjoy it.
Inside, you'll find all the toiletries you need – shampoo, conditioner, body wash –
just remember to grab a towel from your room.
The Private Baths (Zensetang/Chartered Baths)

It was so amazing that I purposely woke up early to use one of the private baths (zensetang)!
There are four private baths in total, available on a first-come, first-served basis.
To use them, simply check the status board at the entrance to the private baths
and enter any available one.
The maximum usage time is 45 minutes!
Just be mindful of the time and exit responsibly. 😉

I tried three of them, and the bath sizes were pretty similar.

Honestly, I found the morning onsen experience
much more enjoyable than the evening one.
Definitely make sure to try a morning hot spring soak before you leave!
It was pure healing itself...
I'm planning another Sapporo Onsen trip
very soon...

Oh, but in the private bath,
there isn't a separate showering area,
so you'll need to shower in the public bath or your room.
6. Dinner & Breakfast
When you come to Jozankei Yurakusouan,
I highly recommend including dinner and breakfast
with your reservation, if possible.
That's because this area is quite rural,
so there's not much around...
There seem to be a few restaurants, but
most of them close early.

However, there are two convenience stores
just a 5-minute walk away!
If the price including dinner
is a bit much, you can always grab something from there. :)

I included both dinner and breakfast.
Dinner is served as a traditional Kaiseki meal.
From sashimi to various Japanese dishes,
and even sukiyaki at the end – the portions were incredibly generous,
so I definitely overate that day! haha

For drinks, one cup of sake is provided initially,
and any additional alcoholic beverages or soft drinks
are available for purchase.

For breakfast, when you come down at the appointed time,
everything is already prepared,
so you can start eating right away.
From grilled fish and natto to Japanese side dishes and
cypress steamed dishes – it was an excellent spread.

Honestly, I had eaten so well at dinner the night before
that I wasn't very hungry for breakfast, but
I still managed to finish it all deliciously! ^^
7. Honest Review of Sapporo Onsen

It was such a shame that I only stayed for one night and two days
at Jozankei Yurakusouan Ryokan, the ultimate Sapporo Onsen experience!
Everyone in my family who came with me
was completely satisfied with this ryokan.
Even now, when we talk about our Sapporo trip,
Yurakusouan still comes up – that's how good it was.

Especially soaking in the onsen while watching the snow fall
between December and February is pure bliss,
so I highly recommend Jozankei Yurakusouan
to anyone planning a winter trip to Sapporo.
Since it's one of the most popular ryokans,
make sure to book quickly before it's fully booked!
