Hello fellow explorers, I'm Kim Yu-pa, and I love to travel!
If you're dreaming of a magical winter getaway in December or January,
one of the first places that probably springs to mind is
none other than Sapporo, Hokkaido, right?
Now, I'm someone who really feels the cold,
so winter destinations aren't usually my top pick.
But with everyone raving about it, I felt like I just had to experience it for myself...

And that's how I ended up heading to Sapporo last December.
Before my trip, I'd heard so many stories about heavy snowfall
and biting cold that I really wondered...
Could I actually enjoy a trip in such freezing temperatures??
Was I making the right choice??
I really deliberated over it.

But stepping into Sapporo in December 2025, I found that
the snowy streets I'd only ever seen in pictures were
truly a winter wonderland straight out of a fairytale.
Today, I'm excited to share my firsthand experiences from the trip,
covering **Sapporo's December weather, the real felt cold,**
**and practical winter outfits.**

1. Sapporo December Weather: What's it Really Like??

Based on my trip in December 2025,
Sapporo was in full-on winter mode.
Daytime temperatures hovered around -3°C,
dropping to as low as -8°C at night.
Some days even saw hail, stinging your face if caught outside.
And with temperatures plummeting further at night, icy roads became a real concern...

While snow fell frequently, what really surprised me was
**how incredibly well the roads were cleared.**
I was initially worried about navigating the snow-covered streets,
but whether I was using public transport or
walking around the city center, it was surprisingly manageable.
**In fact, the sight of the streets blanketed in pristine white snow was**
**incredibly evocative...**
**It felt like a whole different kind of snow, truly magical compared to anywhere else I've seen!**
Apparently, Sapporo starts seeing snow as early as November.
And, of course, December is absolutely no exception!

I've already heard news that the northernmost parts of Hokkaido
have started to receive their first snowfall!
According to the data I consulted,
Sapporo's average precipitation in December is about 111.7mm,
and the average number of precipitation days is 15.4 days,
indicating a period of frequent snowfall.
My experience last December wasn't just 'dry and cold'; instead,
the phrase 'City of Snow' perfectly captured its essence.

However, even within the same month of December,
**the felt temperature can vary significantly depending on the specific date and time,**
so I highly recommend checking the local weather forecast
again just before your departure.

I'd love to share two websites I personally use when I need to check the weather in Japan. |
1. For checking weather more than a month in advance,
I frequently use the AccuWeather website,
2. For the weather within a week or 3 days beforehand,
I often refer to Tenki.
3. What to Wear for a December Trip to Sapporo?

When it comes to Sapporo winter clothing, the most important tip was to dress warmly in multiple layers, rather than relying on just one thick garment.

My recommended basic combination is
Heattech + knit + padded jacket + hot packs.
These are practically survival items...
Got a hot pack in your pocket? It's seriously good.
Stuck a hot pack to your back? That's even better!
The difference having hot packs makes is HUGE!!

If you're planning to spend a lot of time walking outdoors,
it's a good idea to bring gloves, a scarf, and a hat.
Indoors, it tends to be quite warm,
so if you only wear one super thick layer,
it can actually feel uncomfortable when you're moving around.
Plus, heavy clothing can really weigh you down. You might not notice it right away,
but as you explore and walk around, that fatigue really starts to pile up.
Instead, layering thin clothes and removing them when necessary made my trip much more enjoyable and comfortable.

Just as crucial as your outfit are your shoes!
In snowy Sapporo,
regular fabric sneakers or thin athletic shoes
will easily get soaked, and your feet will be freezing in no time!!
That's why I highly recommend
bringing insulated, waterproof boots
that can stand up to snow and moisture.

Especially if your itinerary involves walking around sightseeing all day,
keeping your feet toasty warm will make a huge difference in how much energy you have and how quickly you get tired.
And for all you photography enthusiasts out there,
don't forget to think about how your clothing colors will pop against that stunning snowy backdrop!
Since the whole world is white, wearing clothes with a moderate amount of color, like beige, navy, or brown,
or utilizing a statement scarf,
will make your photos turn out much prettier.
If You're Traveling to Sapporo in January, Dress Even Warmer!

January is even colder than December? It's best to think of it as a full-on winter trip and prepare accordingly.
Just like in Korea, January and February are much colder than December, right? It's the same in Sapporo... it gets significantly colder.

There are many days when temperatures stay below freezing even during the day,
and it can drop even further in the mornings and evenings.
So, if you have a lot of outdoor sightseeing planned,
I highly recommend carefully preparing your padded jackets and other winter gear.
Especially since a Sapporo trip often involves a lot of walking through snowy streets,
it's easiest to consider a padded jacket, gloves, scarf, insulated boots, and hot packs
as essential winter travel basics.
5. Sapporo Winter Airfare Prices

If you're preparing for a winter trip to Sapporo, you'll naturally look into flights alongside the weather and what to wear.

Overall Review of My Sapporo Trip in December 2025
To be honest, I'm not particularly fond of snow or cold weather,
so I was quite worried before my last trip to Sapporo.
But I decided to go while I was still young,
and once I actually arrived, I found it to be a much more pleasant trip than I expected.
The air was definitely chilly,
but looking at the snow-covered streets and the winter scenery actually made my heart feel refreshed.
And snow removal was faster than I expected, so there wasn't much inconvenience during the trip,
but do remember that roads can be icy at night!
If you're worried about Sapporo's December weather,
just make sure you prepare your clothing properly.
With Heattech, a knit sweater, and a padded jacket as your base,
and adding gloves, a scarf, insulated boots, and even hot packs,
you'll be able to enjoy winter Sapporo much more comfortably.
If you, like me, want to experience Sapporo's snowy winter scenery firsthand,
prepare warmly and go for it.
Have an amazing trip!
