Many travelers imagine Sapporo's summers to be refreshingly cool, a welcome escape from Japan's notorious heat. While it's true that Hokkaido generally offers a milder climate, don't be fooled by the reputation, especially in August! It can get surprisingly warm.

Today, let's break down the average August weather in Sapporo and offer some essential advice on what to wear to make your trip comfortable!

Sapporo August Weather

In August, Sapporo typically sees an average high temperature of around 79°F (26°C), often climbing to this range during the day. As evening approaches, temperatures cool down to about 66°F (19°C).

While it's not the sweltering, all-day heat you might experience in other parts of Asia, the daytime sun can be quite strong, making even a short-sleeved shirt feel warm. What often catches visitors off guard is the higher-than-expected humidity, which can make walking around for extended periods quite tiring.

From July through August, rain showers are also quite common. While the chance of rain tends to decrease after mid-August, it's always a good idea to carry a compact umbrella with you – just in case!

What to Wear

For daytime exploration, pack your usual summer attire. Think light and breathable!

You can savor a fantastic array of beers and delicious food throughout Odori Park. I highly recommend making time to experience this vibrant festival!

Biei Tour

A trip to Sapporo often includes a mandatory Biei tour! While the famous lavender fields are mostly past their peak by August, you'll still be treated to a stunning display of various other flowers. Shikisai-no-Oka (Panoramic Flower Gardens Shikisai-no-oka) is an absolute must-visit on any tour.

Don't forget to indulge in lavender ice cream and Yubari melon! Note that while you might find lavender ice cream in Biei/Furano, Yubari melon is typically purchased in department stores or markets within Sapporo city itself.

Key attractions like Shikisai-no-Oka, the Blue Pond, and Shirahige Waterfall are quite spread out. If you don't have a rental car, a day tour is by far the most convenient option.

Given the considerable travel time between sites, opting for a tour is highly recommended, especially if you're traveling with family or visiting the region for the first time.
