Sapporo 5-Day Itinerary 2026: Guide to Hokkaido's Capital
Dreaming of Hokkaido? This 5-day Sapporo itinerary guides you through the best of the city, Otaru's charm, and Biei's scenic beauty. Discover local eats, smart shopping, and essential packing tips!
Quick answer
- Public transport and walking are sufficient for Sapporo and Otaru; consider a bus tour for Biei.
- Visit Otaru via a 40-minute JR train ride from Sapporo for canal views, shopping, and seafood.
- Shop tax-free on purchases over ~$38 (5,000 JPY) at a single store; always carry your passport.
- Pack layers for cold weather, a 110v adapter, power bank, passport, and an e-SIM or SIM card.

I visited Sapporo in September, just before winter arrived. I didn't use a rental car for my trip; instead, I opted for a Biei bus tour one day and traveled to Otaru by JR train. Exploring the city center on foot was perfectly manageable, and I found public transportation to be quite convenient.
I'm excited to share a fulfilling 5-day itinerary and essential packing tips to help you make the most of your Sapporo adventure.
Sapporo Day 1

On your first day, it's best not to overdo it. After checking into your accommodation, take some time to explore the city center. Most travelers stay near Susukino Station, so places like Sapporo PARCO or Kokoro Susukino are great for indoor browsing.

The underground Daiichi Susukino area is packed with food options. It's the perfect spot to grab dinner and then stock up on snacks for later before heading back to your hotel.
Sapporo Day 2
Day two marks the real start of our journey. Let's head to Otaru!

If you're in Sapporo, I highly recommend visiting Otaru. It's a charming small port city, just about 40 minutes (approximately 25 miles) by JR train from Sapporo Station.

You can explore the Music Box Museum Main Building, the LeTAO Main Store, and enjoy fresh seafood rice bowls or sushi. A leisurely stroll along the Otaru Canal makes for a perfect half-day excursion.
Many visitors choose to go early in the morning and return in the afternoon, or take their time, arriving around lunchtime to enjoy the evening lights before heading back.

Sapporo Day 3

Day three is dedicated to a Biei bus tour. While some say you need a rental car to truly experience Sapporo, and it certainly offers the advantage of exploring hidden corners, the stress of driving in a foreign country and rental costs can be significant.

For a one-day trip, nothing beats a bus tour for efficiently seeing multiple attractions in a short amount of time.

I went with Youtour Bus, a top-tier company for Sapporo bus tours. Many travelers choose Youtour Bus for the convenience of pre-booking popular spots like Junpei.
For more detailed information about the tour, please refer to my other post below.
Sapporo Day 4

Day four is for shopping at Mega Don Quijote! If you're looking for clothes, stop by Daimaru Department Store Sapporo to browse brands like Uniqlo and H&M. Don't forget your passport, as you can claim tax-free shopping for purchases over ~$38 (approximately 5,000 JPY) at the same store on the same day.

I made a rookie mistake and completely forgot my passport when I bought clothes at Uniqlo, missing out on the tax refund. What a waste!

With some extra time, I also went up to the JR Tower Observatory. While the tower isn't as tall as some in other regions, it offers sufficient views of the Sapporo cityscape.

It's about a 1-mile walk (approximately 20 minutes) from Susukino Station to Sapporo Station. Along the way, you can admire Odori Park and the Sapporo Clock Tower. If you have some time in the evening before heading back to your accommodation, a stroll around Odori Park is lovely.

On your final day, day 5, if you're pressed for time to get to the airport, head straight there to explore the duty-free shops. If you have some extra time in the morning, a quick stop at an early-opening restaurant or cafe is a great way to wrap up your trip.
When traveling to Sapporo, the most crucial thing to pack is weather-appropriate clothing. I underestimated the chilly weather during my September visit and suffered a bit. Since you'll be spending a lot of time outdoors, make sure to bundle up. Beyond that, a 110v adapter, a portable power bank, your passport, and an e-SIM (or physical SIM card) should ensure a smooth trip. You won't necessarily need a multi-adapter; it's better to bring several 220v to 110v conversion adapters.
