Dreaming of a winter wonderland? This packed 4-day Sapporo itinerary is your ticket to snowy landscapes, festive markets, and unforgettable Japanese culture.

When it comes to winter travel, Sapporo, Japan is in a league of its own. It's the ultimate snowy wonderland, and I've crafted the perfect 4-day itinerary to help you experience every magical moment.
This is an action-packed schedule designed to showcase the very best of Sapporo in winter. It's ambitious, but absolutely worth it.
If you prefer a more leisurely pace, I highly recommend extending your trip to 5 days.
Your first day is mostly about travel. Even if you catch a morning flight, by the time you navigate the airport and get to the city, it'll likely be around 3 or 4 PM. In the winter, the sun sets early, so don't try to cram too much in.
Plus, international arrivals and immigration can take a while, leaving you ready to relax.

For Day 1, I suggest a simple plan: check into your hotel, find a great local restaurant for dinner, and maybe grab a nightcap at an izakaya or snacks from a convenience store.
The Susukino district is buzzing with fantastic restaurants and bars.
While you're there, you have to get a photo with the iconic Nikka Whisky sign. It's a Sapporo rite of passage!

If you've still got some energy, wandering through the city's winter illuminations is a lovely way to end the night. They're not necessarily a destination in themselves, but they add a magical sparkle to an evening stroll.
📍Sapporo Ekimae-dori (Kita 4-jo to Minami 4-jo)
📍Minami 1-jo dori (Minami 1-jo Nishi 1 to 3-chome)
📍Sapporo Kita 3-jo Plaza (Akapla)
📍Sapporo Station South Exit Plaza (Kita 5-jo Nishi 3-chome)
You can preview what the displays look like on their official website to see if it catches your eye.

On your second day, I highly recommend a day tour to Biei and Furano.
This is a full-day excursion and can be quite tiring, which is why it's best to tackle it early in your trip when you're full of energy.
While you could rent a car, driving in Hokkaido's heavy snow can be stressful and dangerous if you're not experienced.
A bus tour is the perfect solution. You can relax, visit multiple stunning spots effortlessly, and get fascinating insights from a local guide. It's a traveler favorite for a reason!

There are many tour operators to choose from, which can be overwhelming.
If you need help picking one, the guide below offers some great tips on selecting the best tour for you.
Comparison of Sapporo Biei & Furano Day Tour Companies (in Korean)

While the order might vary, most tours include the iconic Christmas Tree, the stunningly blue Shirahige Falls, the Takushinkan photo gallery, and the fairy-tale-like Ningle Terrace.
These tours sell out fast during the peak winter season, so be sure to book well in advance!

Just a 30-45 minute train ride from Sapporo, Otaru is a picturesque port town that feels like a step back in time. It's famous for the beautiful Otaru Canal, enchanting music box museums, and an incredible sushi scene.
You can easily explore its main attractions in half a day, making it a perfect and easy day trip.

Back in Sapporo, head to Odori Park. This park is the city's heart, hosting festivals year-round. Until Christmas Day, it's home to a magical Christmas Market, and in February, it transforms for the world-famous Sapporo Snow Festival.

The Sapporo Christmas Market was one of my most anticipated spots, and it didn't disappoint. While not as large as its European counterparts, it perfectly captures that festive, cozy atmosphere.
A quick tip: it gets very crowded in the evening, leading to long waits for food, which can be a bit pricey. I suggest visiting in the late afternoon before the dinner rush.

You can find a wide variety of charming Christmas ornaments and souvenirs, and their prices are quite reasonable. It’s a wonderful place to soak in the holiday spirit without flying all the way to Europe!

After enjoying the market in Odori Park, head up the Sapporo TV Tower for a breathtaking panoramic view of the city.
The best time to go is just before sunset to watch the city transition from day to night.

The city's illuminations switch on around 4:30 PM, so if you're on the observation deck before 4:00 PM, you'll be in the perfect spot for the show.
Even before the lights turn on, the view of the snow-covered city is absolutely beautiful.
(Pro tip: Booking your tickets online in advance is cheaper than buying them at the counter!)

On your last day, it's time to head home. Use the morning to do whatever you missed out on.
Whether it's last-minute souvenir shopping, grabbing one more bowl of ramen, or a final bit of sightseeing, I recommend keeping this day flexible.
If you're looking for one last classic Sapporo experience, the Sapporo Beer Museum is a fantastic choice!

For any beer enthusiast, the Sapporo Beer Museum is an absolute must-visit.
You can explore exhibits and videos detailing the history of beer in Japan and then, the best part, sample a flight of three different fresh draft beers.
It’s the perfect way to toast to an amazing trip before you head to the airport.
A 3-night, 4-day Sapporo itinerary is designed to allow you to fully enjoy winter Sapporo, but it can be challenging to truly relax. If you'd like a more leisurely trip, we recommend 4 nights and 5 days.
Even if you take a morning flight from Incheon Airport, you will likely arrive in Sapporo city center around 3-4 PM, and immigration procedures can take a long time. For the first day, we recommend checking into your accommodation, having dinner at a local restaurant near your lodging, and then enjoying a late-night snack at an izakaya or convenience store.
Sapporo city illuminations can be seen on Sapporo Ekimae-dori (Kita 4-jo to Minami 4-jo) and Minami Ichijo-dori (Minami 1-jo Nishi 1-chome to 3-chome). You can also enjoy them at Sapporo City Kita 3-jo Plaza (Akarenga Terrace) and Sapporo Station South Exit Plaza (Kita 5-jo Nishi 3-chome).
It takes 30 minutes by rapid train and 45 minutes by local line from Sapporo to Otaru. Otaru is a great destination for a light half-day trip, where you can explore attractions like the Otaru Canal and the Music Box Museum in about half a day.
