If you're planning a summer trip to Sapporo,

there's one thing I highly recommend you consider.

And that's a "rental car"!

Unlike winter, when snow makes driving tricky and sometimes hazardous,

driving yourself allows you to fully immerse in the refreshing coolness of summer,

and a scenic drive is a fantastic way to elevate your travel satisfaction.

It's truly a game-changer for your journey.

However, if you only have a short 3-night, 4-day itinerary,

you might wonder if it's possible to visit all of Biei, Furano, Otaru, and Shakotan.

That's a valid concern you'll need to consider.

So today, based on my own recent travels,

I'm excited to share my recommended 3-night, 4-day

Sapporo self-guided itinerary with a rental car version!

1. How should you plan your 3-night, 4-day Sapporo travel itinerary?

Please note that this itinerary is designed

especially for first-time visitors.

Day 1. Arrive in Sapporo, and start your trip at a relaxed pace.

✔️ I actually regretted renting a car for the entire trip this time.

(Unless you arrive very early in the morning, after picking up your rental car,

your first day will mostly consist of travel into the city.)

If you arrive at New Chitose Airport, take the JR line or

an airport limousine bus to get to the city center.

Instead of rushing into a packed schedule on your first day,

it's great to check into your accommodation, then leisurely explore Odori Park, the Clock Tower, and Susukino.

It's a perfect way to ease into your trip.

Day 2. Scenic Drives to Nearby Areas

If you're on a 3-night, 4-day itinerary, this is arguably the most crucial day!

I recommend two main options:

Visit Biei and Furano

If you want to fully experience the quintessential summer landscapes of Hokkaido,

this is the most satisfying itinerary.

I highly recommend a drive through stunning spots like Patchwork Road, the Blue Pond, and Farm Tomita,

where you can immerse yourself in the beautiful scenery of vibrant flowers and refreshing blue lakes.

It's an unforgettable drive!

While this route is already very popular for bus tours,

the more leisurely you can explore, the greater your satisfaction will be,

making a rental car even more beneficial here.

✔️ Witness Nature's Grandeur:

Visit Otaru and Shakotan

For many, summer instantly brings thoughts of the sea, doesn't it?

Enjoy gentle sightseeing from the Otaru Canal to the Music Box Museum,

Continuing on to Shakotan's mesmerizing emerald-blue waters,

you can truly make the most of your day.

On your way from Otaru to Shakotan, you'll discover charming spots to explore,

so while a rental car is a great option,

if driving feels like a hassle, a bus tour is an excellent alternative!

While many travelers tend to hop from one tourist spot to another,

**I wholeheartedly recommend dedicating at least one full day to simply soaking in the atmosphere of Sapporo itself.**

You can explore with a variety of themes, including **visiting Nijo Market, strolling through Odori Park, indulging in café hopping, hitting the shops,**

**and embarking on delicious food tours.**

Personally, I got a bit overconfident this time, thinking I'd been there often enough,

and casually decided, 'Shopping? I'll just squeeze that in briefly on the last day!'

Well, that led to me missing out on so many places due to lack of time.

So please, **make sure to dedicate at least one day to a relaxed itinerary!**

However, don't fret! The airport itself offers a fantastic array of food and entertainment

(especially for souvenir and snack shopping),

so consider arriving a little early to leisurely explore everything it has to offer!

2. Planning Your Summer Sapporo Adventure? Here’s What to Keep in Mind!

Honestly, I completely get that feeling – we never know when we'll be back,

so naturally, you want to see and experience absolutely everything when you're here!

Focus and Prioritize!

However, Hokkaido, the vast region where Sapporo resides,

is not to be underestimated!

**Hokkaido is a region with incredibly long travel distances.** The more ambitious your itinerary, the more time you'll actually spend

**inside a car** rather than truly exploring!

Therefore, **if it's your first visit, I recommend Biei/Furano.** But **if you've been before, then the Shakotan itinerary is a fantastic choice!**

(Otaru, being just an hour away by train,

doesn't necessarily need to be combined with these longer trips).

Rent a Car Only When You Need It!

I initially planned to explore extensively and get an early start each morning.

I particularly **disliked the idea of losing precious sightseeing time due to rental car pickup, so I just rented for the full 3 nights and 4 days**, you know?

However, **the parking fees were absolutely outrageous!**

I barely even used the car on the first and last days.

But the moment you park, a good ~$7-~$14

just vanishes from your wallet each day.

And that's not all, is it? Factor in fuel, insurance, rental charges, tolls, and more.

Honestly, Hokkaido has such excellent tours,

it's great to compare prices and itineraries before booking.

If you prefer not to mingle with others, you can even apply for private van tours,

making it super convenient.

(But private tours are quite expensive, so you might as well rent a car instead...)
