Sapporo: The hottest travel destination this winter!

And guess what? I just got back from there!

I actually went for a 10-day trip, including a stop in Fukuoka and a stay at Tomamu Resort. So, I've adjusted my itinerary to focus on the popular 5-day trip duration, which is what most travelers opt for, and that's what I'll be sharing as a recommended course here! Just a heads-up!

I'll also be uploading detailed day-by-day posts in sequence, so stay tuned!

Sapporo 5-Day Travel Itinerary

5-Day Itinerary Summary

DAY 1 | Sapporo

Airport - Hokkaido University - Lunch - Shiroi Koibito Park - Dinner - Clock Tower - Norbèsa Ferris Wheel (Noria)

* Alternative to Shiroi Koibito Park = Sapporo Beer Garden & Museum (Recommended)

After arriving at Sapporo via the JR train from the airport, I dropped off my luggage at the accommodation!

I visited the Hokkaido University campus. It's a fantastic spot for a snowy stroll and some great photos!

After exploring, I went to get some soup curry nearby. I originally planned to visit Picante, but the line was incredibly long, so I ended up going to a place called Sam's Curry instead.

After lunch, I did some light exploring near Sapporo Station before heading to Shiroi Koibito Park, a charming cookie theme park! It's especially popular in winter for its beautiful illuminations.

After that, I visited Saki Hanamaru, a branch of Hanamaru, my favorite sushi brand. Absolutely delicious! 🤤

Right next door, I snapped a quick photo at the Sapporo Clock Tower! ✨

After a short rest at the accommodation,

I went for a ride on the Norbèsa Ferris Wheel (Noria). It might not be the best value for money, but it was still quite fun!

After the Ferris wheel, I sought out a place called Châteraisé (Shatorê) that I had found in advance, eager to experience Sapporo's unique Shime Parfait culture – a must-do after a night out! If you visit Sapporo, you absolutely have to try a parfait!

DAY 2 | Otaru Day Trip

Minami-Otaru Station (disembark) - Old Railway Tracks - Sakaimachi Street - Otaru Canal - Return to Sapporo - Dinner - Nikka Whisky Distillery

While I actually spent two days and one night in Otaru, most people visit it as a day trip. So, I've adjusted this itinerary to reflect a day trip plan! (I did a day trip there in the summer too!)

If you're looking to grab a meal at the Sankaku Market, I highly recommend getting off at Otaru Station!

From Otaru Station, you can explore places like Sankaku Market and the Love Letter Hill before heading to Minami-Otaru Station to continue your itinerary!

After getting off at Minami-Otaru Station,

you can explore the nearby railway crossing, which is a popular photo spot, and then stroll along Sakaimachi Street!

You'll find plenty to see and eat, including the Music Box Museum, various dessert cafes, and the Kitaichi Hall Cafe!

Finally, let's make sure to check out the **Otaru Canal**!

Heads up: as Otaru's number one tourist spot, it can get pretty crowded!

For dinner, we devoured some pre-booked yakiniku 🤤

And of course, we had to snap some photos at the iconic **Nikka-san Photo Zone**!

The Big Three photo spots for a Sapporo trip are:

The Christmas Tree, Nikka-san, and the TV Tower!

DAY 3 | Sapporo

Hokkaido Shrine & Maruyama Park - Lunch - Nakajima Park - Dinner - TV Tower/Odori Park - Don Quijote

* If you love shopping, I highly recommend swapping out the morning itinerary for some retail therapy (think department stores, Uniqlo, and more!)

First thing in the morning, we popped into the Patagonia outlet near our accommodation,

before heading to **Hokkaido Shrine and Maruyama Park**.

It's absolutely breathtaking when it snows, so it was a bit of a shame to miss that experience.

Back in Sapporo city center, we refueled with some delicious Tendon.

Since the Tendon spot was literally right outside our lodging, we even snuck in a quick rest.

Next up, we made our way to **Nakajima Park** and

tried our hand at Nordic skiing.

Imagine having this much fun for free! Seriously, I can't recommend it enough!

Time for the pre-booked Jingisukan! We were so excited to try it.

I'm usually a big fan of lamb, but this spot left me a little wanting...!

While it had great reviews, I personally found Daruma to be more delicious!

As evening fell, we made our way to another fantastic photo spot: the **TV Tower**~

Honestly, since the TV Tower is right in the heart of Sapporo's city center,

you'll probably find yourself seeing it every day anyway, haha (Nikka-san too!)

DAY 4 | Biei Bus Tour

Bus Tour (Shirohige Waterfall - Christmas Tree - Takushinkan - Free Time (Lunch) - Ningle Terrace) - Susukino (Nikka-san) - Dinner - Robatayaki

I ventured to Biei by joining a fantastic bus tour.

I snagged a booking for just under ~$48 per person!

Before grabbing lunch,

we visited Shirahige Falls, the Christmas Tree, and Takushinkan!

We went to Shirahige Falls, and the active volcanic landscape was absolutely stunning.

Definitely the top spot on our bus tour!!

We also visited the Christmas Tree and Takushinkan!

Challenge yourself to get that perfect life shot at the tree, Sapporo's number one photo spot!

After visiting these three spots,

we had some free time in Biei Village.

Most people headed to Junpei, a famous spot for shrimp tempura donburi,

but since someone in our group had a shrimp allergy,

we opted for free-choice dining!

We also visited Ningle Terrace, a place typically visited in winter,

but the weather was so good that day, with plenty of sun,

which made for a slightly less magical view than usual...

We caught up on some sweet sleep on the bus and wrapped up the tour!

We got off in Susukino!

We also checked out the Nikka sign (a must-take photo spot!)

and indulged in some delicious Monjayaki, one of my favorites!

DAY 5 | Departure

Airport - Flight

New Chitose Airport is packed with things to see and eat,

so if it's your first time visiting, I highly recommend arriving with plenty of time

to explore and savor everything it offers.

In particular, there's a Ramen Street

featuring 10 famous ramen shops from the Hokkaido region,

meaning you can taste them all here without waiting in long lines like you might in downtown Sapporo 👍🏻

And just like that, our Sapporo adventure came to an end...!

It was such a happy and delicious trip!

Despite being a budget-friendly hotel, the space was quite generous!!

Its location near Odori Park also made it super convenient for getting to and from Susukino.

Having a washing machine and dryer in the room was an absolute lifesaver •_•

Flights | Fukuoka-Sapporo Transit

Total ~$242

I felt the flight prices to Sapporo during peak season were a bit steep, so I decided to book a flight with a layover in Fukuoka, turning it into a mini-trip!

I booked round-trip tickets from Busan to Fukuoka, and then Fukuoka to Sapporo, all for a total of ~$242 on Trip.com!

If you have some extra time, I highly recommend a layover! 👍🏻
