SWEDEN

I was drawn here by a single photo.
Twelve years ago, it was the same story with Benagil Cave in Portugal. Back then, I didn't even have an address; I literally carried a photo and asked locals for directions. (These days, it's quite famous among travelers!) You can read more about that adventure here: My last appearance on KBS2 'Morning is Good', Secret Travel Destination Edition!
This time... I did have the address. But the road there was incredibly rough (unpaved) the entire way, making me wonder, 'Am I even going the right way???' Thankfully, I found it!
Searching for 'Skulptur i Pilane' (the original name) or 'Pilane Burial Mounds Sculpture Park' in English yielded not a single blog post from Korean travelers as of October 2026.

There was one blog post, but it wasn't from someone who had actually visited.

Ancient Relics from 1,000 BCE Meet Massive Modern Art

Pilane Sculpture Park (Skulptur i Pilane) is located
within the Pilane Burial Mounds (Pilane Gravfält).
Imagine if a modern art installation was placed directly on top of an ancient historical site, like the prehistoric Amsa-dong Settlement Site in Seoul! That's the essence of Pilane.
Here, where ancient relics and contemporary art coexist, world-renowned artists showcase their works every summer. The monumental pieces I'm about to introduce blur the lines between art and nature, offering a truly unique and inspiring experience.
It's a special place where nature, history, and art intertwine.
Featured Work 1: ANNA, 2016
by Jaume Plensa

ANNA (2016) by Jaume Plensa
This striking piece is by the globally acclaimed Spanish sculptor, Jaume Plensa.
He's renowned for his large-scale sculptures, primarily focusing on human faces and bodies, exploring the intricate relationship between our inner and outer selves.
I even found some of his works in Korea!

ANNA (2016) by Jaume Plensa
'ANNA,' perched atop Pilane Sculpture Park, is one of Jaume Plensa's signature works. With her eyes gently closed, she appears to be lost in peaceful contemplation amidst the vast wilderness. Gazing at Anna, you'll find yourself involuntarily closing your eyes too.
I took a moment, just like Anna, to close my eyes, feel the wind, and connect with nature.
Featured Work 2: Forced to a Change, 2026
by Maria Miesenberger
Beyond 'ANNA,' several other impressive works caught my eye.

Forced to a Change (2026) by Maria Miesenberger
Among them was 'Forced to a Change' by Swedish artist Maria Miesenberger. At first, I simply thought it was 'unique,' but after reading the artist's statement, I understood the piece much better.

Forced to a Change (2026) by Maria Miesenberger
"My work is about...
believing in yourself,
and trusting others,
having the courage to hope.
The courage to leap into the unknown,
even if you don't know what will happen.
And... to believe that things will turn out well,
never losing hope.
To have hope that you can change and grow.
It expresses overcoming resistance and moving beyond it,
sometimes even taking risks.
Always moving, playing, and making progress as a person.
Ultimately, everything is a process, a movement, courage, and an expression of acceptance."

A Unique Exhibition: The Distinctive Harmony of Ancient Burial Mounds and Modern Sculptures
As I mentioned earlier, Pilane Sculpture Park is situated on ancient burial grounds. While thousands of years separate these ancient relics from contemporary art, they surprisingly blend together quite naturally.

The giant face sculpture at the top of the park is 'ANNA', a 2016 work by Spanish sculptor Jaume Plensa. It features a figure with gently closed eyes, seemingly enjoying contemplation in the midst of nature.
Visitors slowly hike over the ancient burial mounds while admiring modern art sculptures placed throughout the site. Exploring ancient ruins, appreciating contemporary art, and walking in nature naturally come together in one single space.
