Hey there, fellow adventurers! It's Eunsu here.
If you're planning a trip to Pattaya, chances are you've already started researching how to get to the stunning Koh Larn island.
Today, I'm going to break down everything you need to know, from navigating the journey between Bali Hai Pier and Na Ban Pier, to why I highly recommend booking your speedboat in advance.

1. Ferry vs. Speedboat: What's the Difference?

There are two main ways to get to Koh Larn. Let's start with a quick comparison:
Type | Ferry | Speedboat |
Fare | 40 Baht one-way | 150~200 Baht one-way |
Travel Time | Approx. 40-45 minutes | Approx. 15-20 minutes |
Features | Most affordable, slower | Fast, but prices can vary |
Ferries operate on a fixed schedule, so you'll need to plan your trip around their departure times.
If you're on a budget and have plenty of time, the ferry is a great option. But if you want to get there quickly, a speedboat is your best bet.
I personally wanted to cut down on travel time, so my heart was set on the speedboat.
📍 Bali Hai Pier
ถนน พัทยาใต้ Muang Pattaya, Amphoe Bang Lamung, Chang Wat Chon Buri 20150 Thailand
Both options involve heading directly to Bali Hai Pier to catch your ride, making them perfect for independent travelers.
2. My Experience: Overpaying for a Speedboat

When I arrived at Bali Hai Pier, I was a bit disoriented. It was hard to tell where to go.
As I was looking around, someone approached me and naturally led me somewhere, so I followed.
They spoke and acted like a speedboat ticket vendor, so I handed over 200 Baht per person.

Then, that person went to the actual ticket booth and exchanged my money for tickets.
At the time, I didn't think much of it. But I later found out that the official ticket price at the booth was 150 Baht.
It felt a bit unfair, realizing they had pocketed an extra 50 Baht from me!

About 20 people ride together on one speedboat, and there are no assigned seats.
Just a heads-up: if you sit closer to the motor at the back, you might get splashed a bit.
The 15-20 minute ride is quite thrilling, bouncing over the waves, but it can also be a little dizzying. If you're prone to seasickness, I highly recommend bringing some motion sickness medication.
3. How to Book Your Speedboat in Advance
Back at my hotel, my overpaying experience kept bothering me. So, I did some digging and discovered that Trip.com offered a slightly cheaper option.

If only I had known this beforehand, I wouldn't have overpaid! This is precisely why I recommend booking in advance.
Category | Trip.com (Advance Booking) |
Price | Roundtrip from ~$7 |
Operating Hours | Bali Hai Pier 07:00 AM - 05:00 PM Koh Larn Pier 09:00 AM - 05:00 PM |
Frequency | One boat per hour (Every 15 minutes during peak times) |
You'll receive two separate tickets, one for the outbound journey and one for the return. Just make sure you don't lose them, or you'll have to buy new ones at the pier!
This is still very much a DIY travel option, just a more convenient way to do it. I recommend this for those who prefer planning their own itinerary, whether buying tickets on-site or in advance.
4. All-in-One: Afternoon Half-Day Tour with Hotel Pickup
I know some of you might find dealing with on-the-spot arrangements in a foreign country a bit daunting.
And like me, you probably want to avoid accidentally paying more than you should!

Plus, comparing different options and sorting out all the details can be a hassle for some.
For those travelers, a half-day tour to Koh Larn could be the perfect choice.
These tours often include hotel pickup, so you don't have to worry about transportation at all.
🔻🔻 Includes English-speaking Guide Option 🔻🔻
A ferry costs 40 baht one way and takes about 40-45 minutes, while a speedboat costs 150-200 baht one way and takes about 15-20 minutes. Speedboats are faster but have varying prices.
When purchasing a speedboat ticket on-site, some people have experienced paying 200 baht per person when the actual ticket office price was 150 baht. Be careful, as you might end up paying an extra 50 baht through an intermediary.
Bali Hai Pier operates from 7 AM to 5 PM, and Koh Larn Pier operates from 9 AM to 5 PM. Boats depart once every hour, and during closing times, they depart every 15 minutes.
If you find on-site arrangements in an unfamiliar country daunting, or if you find it bothersome to research and compare options yourself, you might consider a half-day Koh Larn tour that includes hotel pickup. This is a convenient way to travel without worrying about transportation.
