Otaru is an unmissable stop on any Sapporo trip.
If you're in Hokkaido, fresh seafood donburi is a must-try, which led us to
Uni Specialty Restaurant Yoichiya (世壱屋) in Otaru.
While on the pricier side, their sea urchin bowl left a lasting impression,
so delicious it's still vivid in my memory.
The crab donburi we also ordered, however, was just average compared to our expectations!
Here's our honest review based on our personal experience.
1. Yoichiya Otaru Location & Information

Yoichiya is a seafood donburi restaurant specializing in Hokkaido-produced sea urchin.

Conveniently located near the Otaru Canal and Sakaimachi Street, it’s a great spot for a meal during your Otaru sightseeing itinerary.
They offer a variety of seafood bowls, not just sea urchin, but also tuna, crab, and salmon roe.
2. Yoichiya Menu & Prices

Yoichiya's signature dish is undoubtedly their sea urchin bowl, known as Uni-don!
The menu is quite diverse, ranging from bowls piled high with only sea urchin to combinations with tuna, crab, and salmon roe.
Prices vary greatly depending on the ingredients and composition, typically ranging from ~$45-52 to over ~$111.

Prices can vary based on the type of sea urchin and seasonality.
Compared to typical seafood donburi, it's definitely expensive.
But since we made it all the way to Hokkaido, we figured it was worth splurging on a truly exceptional uni-don!
3. Uni-don Review

▲ Premium Hamanaka Horse Sea Urchin Donburi ~$104 (¥16,500)
The most satisfying, albeit pricey, dish was the
Premium Sea Urchin Donburi, or Uni-don🧡
As you can see from the photo, the vibrant orange sea urchin completely covered the rice.
Sweet shrimp was also served on the side, making the presentation incredibly appetizing...!
You can choose between regular white rice or sushi rice.
We opted for sushi rice and highly recommend it – it pairs perfectly!

Above all, the rich, distinct flavor of the sea urchin was simply exquisite.
The texture melted smoothly in my mouth, offering a creamy, rich, and sweet taste that was absolutely divine..!
Honestly, considering the price, it’s a dish that might make you hesitate to order...
One uni-don cost us ~$104 (¥16,500).

But once I tasted it, I understood why people are willing to pay a premium for uni-don.
Eating it with nori, wasabi, rice, sweet shrimp, and uni is truly a fantastic experience.😋
Among all the food I tried on this Otaru trip, this dish had an incredibly high satisfaction level.
If you love sea urchin, you absolutely must order the uni-don at Yoichiya over any other menu item!

The crab miso soup and rice served with the donburi are refillable for free.
Staff members periodically came by to ask if we wanted refills. Feel free to accept if you're still hungry!
After finishing our meal, they even offered us
a warm hot chocolate.
4. Honest Review of the Crab Donburi

▲ Three Great Crab Flavor Comparison Donburi (Ume) ~$42 (¥6,600)
The other dish we ordered was the
Crab Donburi (Three Great Crab Flavor Comparison Donburi Ume).
With a large crab leg, picked crab meat, and salmon roe, its presentation was truly spectacular.

The whole crab leg on top was particularly impressive, and the amount of crab meat was quite generous.
However, personally, the taste was a little underwhelming compared to its visual appeal.
It wasn't bad, but it didn't offer the same special experience as the uni-don.

Truth be told, I'm not a huge fan of crab in general, so that might have influenced my perception.
Personally, instead of ordering the crab donburi, I'd recommend opting for a bowl with a variety of seafood like uni, tuna, or salmon!
Of course, if you absolutely love crab, you might find it satisfying,
but for my palate, the uni-don was overwhelmingly superior.
5. Overall Recommendation for Otaru Uni-don

If you're planning an Otaru trip from Sapporo, Uni Specialty Restaurant Yoichiya is definitely a seafood spot worth considering.
However, since the prices are on the higher side, I believe menu selection is crucial.
Between the two dishes we tried, there's no question – I wholeheartedly recommend the uni-don!
If you're a sea urchin lover, be sure to add Uni Specialty Restaurant Yoichiya to your Otaru restaurant list!♥️
