1. Okinawa Rental Car vs. Exploring on Foot

When you're planning an adventure to Okinawa,
the big question often comes down to this:
should you explore on foot,
or opt for the ultimate comfort and freedom of a rental car!
To rent or not to rent, that is the question!
Given that many of Okinawa's must-see destinations are in the northern parts,
and its public transportation isn't quite as extensive as in bustling cities like Tokyo or Osaka,
If you're exploring on foot,
you'll likely find yourself booking one-day bus tours for sightseeing!
But for other spots,
and especially since I was determined to catch the cherry blossom festival,
renting a car became an absolute necessity for me!

2. How to Book a Rental Car in Okinawa
There are two main ways to book a rental car for your Okinawa adventure.
1. Book in advance from your home country (e.g., Korea)
2. Rent directly upon arrival
Booking in advance is definitely the more budget-friendly option, right?!
In fact, I know someone who tried to rent directly from a car agency there,
and they were quoted ~$62 for just one day!
Meanwhile, I snagged a car for just ~$35 a day~

Okinawa Rental Car Booking Websites
Alright, now that you're ready, it's time to book your rental car through a reservation website, isn't it?
You'll find both Korean and Japanese booking websites, but I personally found the Japanese sites offered better deals.
Since it's easy enough to use a translation tool, I went with a Japanese booking site!
Korean Booking Websites
1. Trip.com
2. Klook
3. Skyscanner
4. Dr. Okinawa
5. Rentalcars

This is Trip.com, where you can find affordable rental cars!
It was so convenient because you can **set separate pick-up and drop-off locations when booking**!
I used a Japanese website before, and it was a bit inconvenient.
If you can find something cheaper on a Korean website instead, I think it's better to do it this way!

If you click the link above, you can make a reservation!
If you want to book comfortably in Korean,
try it through the link above!
Japanese Booking Sites
1. Sky Ticket
2. Okiraku
3. Rakuten Travel
4. Tabirai
5. Rennai
6. Jalan.net
The site I booked with was
Jalan.net!

The pick-up location and
the drop-off location are all you need to choose!
After that, here's what you need to choose:
1. Non-smoking car
2. Automatic transmission
3. Options: Navigation, ETC device
4. Compensation: Liability Exemption System, Rental Car Peace of Mind Pack (RAP) System
That's how you do it!
There are discount coupons on the right,
so use a translator to utilize them!

While looking around, I found an even better site than Jalan.net!!
It's really well-designed in Korean,
and I found a place that offers great discounts!!
It's the **Rakuten Travel** discount

Since it's in Korean, you can easily make your selections!
They say they offer discounts of up to 34% until May 7, 2026!

3. Tips for Affordable Car Rental

Here are my tips for renting a car affordably:
1. Get a 10% discount with a coupon when booking!
2. Pick up your car in Kokusai-dori (International Street), return it at Naha Airport.
Just follow these two steps!
I already explained the first tip above!
For the second tip, picking up the car in Kokusai-dori means you don't use it for a full day,
which helps you save money!
I arrived late in the afternoon on the first day,
so renting a car for that day felt a bit wasteful!
Plus, I wanted to explore the city around Kokusai-dori,
and grab some food,
so a rental car wasn't really necessary then!
People also say driving in Kokusai-dori is tricky,
and parking fees are more expensive,
so I decided to rent starting from the second day.

4. Recommended ORIX Rent-A-Car Costs (Best Value)

ORIX Rent-A-Car was the company that offered the best value for money!
And since it was the closest one to Kokusai-dori,
it was my top pick!

After booking the rental car,
the confirmation arrived instantly via email!
You just need to print it out and bring it with you~
The rental car costs are listed in the usage fees below!
Basic Fee: 22,100 yen
+ Compensation Fee: 2,640 yen
Total Amount: 24,740 yen
- Discount Coupon: 2,800 yen
Final Payment Amount: 21,940 yen (tax included)
Payment on site
I rented it for 4 days,
which worked out to be about ~$35 per day!
Such a great deal, right?!
I feel like I snagged an amazing deal for the value!

Now, when you head to the rental company, just show the staff
your international driver's permit, Korean driver's license, passport, and your printed reservation
That's all you need to show them!
Then, after a brief explanation,
you'll simply pay the total fee on the spot!
Once that's done, you're ready to check out your rental car!

It's a good idea to take photos of any existing scratches or dents on the car.
While they might tell you it's not strictly necessary,
it's always best to snap a few pics just in case, right?
The reason you might not *have* to take pictures is because any scratches incurred
are fully covered, so it's hassle-free!

The tank was already full when I picked it up,
so after 4 days of driving and returning it,
all I had to do was fill it back up!
After 4 days of driving,
my gas bill was only 2,484 yen!
Japanese cars are truly fuel-efficient – no surprise there!
Parking fee: 500 yen
ETC (Electronic Toll Collection): 650 yen
My total cost came out to ~$164!

Driving on the left side of the road
felt pretty fascinating!
Up until the day before I went to Okinawa,
I was genuinely so stressed about it,
but once I focused and got behind the wheel,
it actually felt even more comfortable than I expected??
For traffic lights, if it's red, you absolutely
STOP!
Make wide right turns,
and tight left turns!
You'll adapt in just 10 minutes – it's that quick!

As long as you master parking, you'll be absolutely perfect!
Luckily, my car had a rearview camera,
making parking a breeze to master!
Just stay focused, and you'll drive safely and
without any incidents!
That concludes my guide on Okinawa ORIX Rent-A-Car booking costs and recommendations (picking up your car at Kokusai-dori, tips for affordable rentals)!
I hope this helps you book an affordable rental car for your Okinawa adventure!
It's definitely much better to set the language to Korean when booking!
If I travel there again, I'll absolutely book through here again, haha!

Once you've got your rental car booked, don't forget to reserve your Blue Cave snorkeling adventure in advance too!
Okinawa has many attractions in the northern region, and its public transportation is not as well-developed as in Tokyo or Osaka, making it challenging to travel solely on foot. As an alternative, you can consider using a one-day bus tour.
Two tips for booking a rental car cheaply are to use discount coupons to get a 10% discount, and to pick up the car at Kokusai Street and return it at Naha Airport. Picking up the car at Kokusai Street can save you rental costs on the first day.
The author used ORIX Rent-A-Car for 4 days, receiving a 2,800 JPY discount coupon from a total of 24,740 JPY (22,100 JPY for the basic fee plus 2,640 JPY for the compensation fee). Therefore, the final amount paid on-site, including tax, was 21,940 JPY.
When picking up a rental car in Okinawa, you need to prepare an international driving permit, your Korean driver's license, your passport, and your reservation printout. These documents should be presented to the staff.
Unlike South Korea, Okinawa has left-hand traffic. The signal system requires you to stop unconditionally at a red light. There is also a rule to make wide right turns and tight left turns.
