Okinawa Bus Tour Review: Churaumi Aquarium, No Rental Car
Explore Okinawa's northern gems like Churaumi Aquarium, Manzamo, and Kouri Bridge effortlessly with a convenient bus tour. Skip the rental car stress and enjoy a relaxing, guided adventure!

If you're exploring Okinawa without a car, when you plan your itinerary,
one of the biggest concerns is transportation.
The northern part of Okinawa, where the Churaumi Aquarium is located,
is quite far from Naha, where the airport is.
I really wondered how to get there without a rental car,
and agonized over various transportation methods.
But once I actually tried the Okinawa Northern Tour bus,
I didn't have to drive, I could relax during travel,
and there was even plenty of free time at Churaumi – I was totally satisfied💕
I've actually tried both a rental car trip with my child,
and a bus tour with my friends, and honestly,
if you're looking to tour Okinawa without a rental car,
a bus tour to the northern part is a fantastic option!
The Okinawa Northern Tour I took
starts from Naha, goes to American Village, then Manzamo → Kouri Bridge
→ Churaumi Aquarium → visits American Village again, and then returns to Naha.
You can also board and alight at American Village, so if you're staying there, keep this in mind! :)
1. Okinawa Northern Tour Without a Rental Car
📍 Naha Airport
150 Kagamizu, Naha, Okinawa 901-0142 Japan
📍 Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium
424 Ishikawa, Motobu, Kunigami District, Okinawa 905-0206 Japan
The main reason people consider a rental car for an Okinawa trip
is likely due to traveling to the northern part.
From Naha city center,
the distance to the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is about 85km.
Since it takes almost 2 hours even by car,
if you try to navigate each stop with public transportation,
it will take a lot more time than you might expect.
Moreover, since the driving direction in Japan is opposite to what many are used to (like in Korea),
it seems many people find renting a car itself quite daunting!?

When I visited Okinawa with my child previously,
I actually tried renting a car and driving myself, but it was quite daunting,
so for my second visit, I went with friends on an Okinawa Northern Tour bus.
To get straight to the point, while both options have their pros and cons,
the tour was incredibly comfortable.
When I was choosing a Northern Tour, there were two key conditions I looked for:
1️⃣ Plenty of free time at Churaumi Aquarium
2️⃣ Overwhelmingly positive reviews

While there are many tours available,
Churaumi is such a highlight of any Okinawa trip
that it truly deserves to be called the main attraction,
so to ensure I had ample time to explore not just the aquarium but also its surroundings,
I chose the Youtour Bus Northern Tour, which offered about 3 hours of free time.
+ Also, because this tour starts an hour earlier than others,
the time allocated for American Village is 1.5 hours, which is also longer compared to other tours.
Duration: 11 hours
Depart Naha City Center → American Village
→ Manzamo → Kouri Bridge
→ Churaumi Aquarium → American Village
→ Naha City Center
2. Okinawa Bus Tour: Manzamo & Kouri Bridge

The Okinawa Northern Tour
departs from Naha around 8 AM.
Since it's an all-day itinerary,
and there might be waiting lines for restaurants inside Churaumi,
I recommend bringing a simple meal or snack when you leave your accommodation in the morning.

On the day we went,
about 20 people traveled together,
including mother-daughter trips, families with children,
and even solo travelers, so the group was quite diverse.
So even if you're traveling Okinawa solo,
a bus tour doesn't seem like it would be a big deal at all.

The first attraction we arrived at was Manzamo.
The enormous cliff shaped like an elephant's trunk
and the breathtaking blue ocean stretching behind it
were, of course, the first things that caught my eye.
When I came here with my child before, I just snapped a photo in front of the rock
and quickly moved on. But this time, our guide
explained the origin of Manzamo's name and its fascinating history,
which made the same place feel a little different and more meaningful.

Next up was Kouri Bridge.
The color of the sea there was truly stunning,
Starting with the stories connected to Kouri Island,
I also learned why so many couples flock here.
Rather than just visiting a place to snap some photos,
there's a real joy in exploring with these stories in mind.
I guess that's the true beauty of a guided tour!
3. Churaumi Aquarium: 3 Hours of Free Time

And now, for the much-anticipated Churaumi Aquarium! ✨
Honestly, I think one of the biggest reasons many people choose an Okinawa North Tour
is precisely to visit Churaumi.

The admission fee for Churaumi Aquarium is
2,500 JPY for adults, but thankfully,
the tour I joined included the entrance ticket in the overall price,
so I didn't have to buy it separately.
Once you receive your ticket from the guide,
you'll have about 3 hours to freely explore.
Since I'd already visited once before,
I took the lead, planning an optimal route for my friends
who were experiencing it for the first time!

Our route included a visit to the restaurant by the Kuroshio Sea, watching the delightful Okichan Show, exploring the Deep Sea Zone, and then spending quality time simply marveling at the giant tank where whale sharks and manta rays glide gracefully!
Without a doubt, Churaumi's
whale sharks are absolutely magnificent and truly awe-inspiring!
Just sitting in front of the massive tank, completely mesmerized by the aquatic world,
time truly flies. It really makes you feel that the more free time you have at Churaumi,
the better!

While some North Island tours might offer shorter stays at Churaumi,
I personally feel that only having about an hour and a half would be a real shame!
You'd barely have time to catch the Okichan Show or just quickly rush through the aquarium.
If you're hoping to catch the dolphin show, dine at the famous restaurant right by the whale shark tank (the one you've seen all over Instagram!),
and truly immerse yourself in areas like the Deep Sea Zone or the Turtle Zone,
then having around 3 hours will give you peace of mind and allow you to fully enjoy everything.
4. American Village: Drop-off Option
After completing our Churaumi adventure,
as we headed back south,
our final captivating stop was American Village.

Even though you're still in Okinawa, Japan,
the moment you step off the bus, the atmosphere completely transforms!
With neon signs, American-style diners,
and even the international visitors you encounter on the streets, it feels so distinctly American that you might momentarily forget you're in Japan.
It offered a captivating contrast and a completely different kind of fun compared to the natural wonders of the north.

With so many souvenir shops and trendy concept stores,
your free time will absolutely fly by as you browse and shop!
But what truly made our experience special was
the option to end the tour right here!
Since it was a Saturday, I was absolutely thrilled at the thought of catching the fireworks display! Haha.
It was absolutely perfect that we took the North Tour bus on a Saturday!

Originally, my itinerary involved traveling from Naha to American Village
and spending a night there.
But by simply taking advantage of the drop-off option at American Village on the day of our North Tour,
I managed to save both valuable travel time and transportation costs in one go – what a win!
5. Okinawa North Tour Price

When I took the tour,
the Okinawa North Tour price was ~$51...
But wait, the price has become even cheaper..!
After applying coupon discounts, as of September 28th,
the absolute lowest price I found was Klook's tour for just ~$47! 🔥
Klook |
~$49 → ~$47 |
Now, just looking at the initial price,
you might think that ~$44 for a bus tour seems a little steep,
but it's important to remember that transportation in Japan isn't exactly cheap to begin with,
(Just the taxi fare from Naha to Churaumi alone is ~$146)
Churaumi Aquarium entrance ticket alone is 2,500 yen for adults, and if you add in the time and cost of travel from Naha to the northern region, visiting various attractions independently over a day, and even learning about their history, it's actually a reasonable price.
If it's the same tour, there's no reason to book it more expensively, so I recommend grabbing a coupon and paying at the lowest price!

The best thing, above all, is being able to relax and not drive during your trip.
Okinawa's northern region has long travel times; if you rent a car, someone constantly has to be alert and driving, but being able to travel while everyone relaxes together is a definite advantage of a bus tour.
If you want to travel Okinawa without a rental car and visit the Churaumi Aquarium, or efficiently explore the northern attractions all in one day, then the Okinawa Northern Tour Bus is highly recommended!
