Okinawa Food Guide: 6 Unique Dishes to Try in 2026

Okinawa, unlike mainland Japan,

boasts a truly distinctive food culture.

A fascinating blend of influences from the ancient Ryukyu Kingdom, historical ties with China,

and the era of US military administration has created

a treasure trove of unique dishes you'll only find here.

Allow me to introduce some of the incredible foods I savored during my Okinawa trip.

Instead of focusing on specific restaurants, I've curated a list of must-try dishes

that are essential for any Okinawan culinary adventure.

1. Okinawa Soba

While it's called "soba," Okinawa Soba isn't made with buckwheat flour like traditional Japanese soba.

Instead, these noodles are crafted from wheat flour, giving them a thick, chewy texture

that's more akin to a hearty noodle soup.

It's characterized by its rich broth, typically made from pork bones,

and often topped with tender slices of braised pork.

Okinawa Soba is a perfect recommendation for lunch. For a quick morning bite,

you can even find a mini cup noodle version called "Asa Soba" at FamilyMart convenience stores.

2. Taco Rice

Taco Rice is a delicious legacy of Okinawa's US military administration era,

essentially a taco served over rice instead of a tortilla.

The Mexican-inspired spice combined with rice is surprisingly harmonious.

Personally, this was my favorite Okinawan dish I tried!

You can find Taco Rice seasoning kits in Okinawan souvenir shops.

I still regret not buying a kit to bring home!

3. Spam Tamago Onigiri

This Okinawan-style rice ball features a delicious combination of Spam and scrambled egg.

It's one of the most accessible Okinawan foods, widely available with various toppings like

mentaiko (spicy cod roe) or cheese, making it perfect for breakfast or a quick snack.

You'll find these at convenience stores and specialty shops throughout Okinawa. FamilyMart, in particular,

sells them with a prominent Spam logo – definitely give that one a try!

4. Steak & Rafute

Thanks to the lasting influence of the US military presence, beef is surprisingly affordable in Okinawa.

While famous chains like 88 Steak are abundant in areas like Naha's Kokusai Street and American Village,

I personally recommend seeking out the hidden local steak joints tucked away in side streets.

You can enjoy a fantastic steak at a very reasonable price.

Then there's "Rafute," Okinawa's signature braised pork dish,

influenced by the Chinese Dongpo pork. This incredibly tender pork is slow-cooked with Awamori liquor.

5. Awamori (Okinawan Traditional Liquor)

Awamori is Okinawa's traditional distilled liquor,

made from long-grain indica rice and Okinawan black koji mold. It's known for its distinctive, aromatic flavor

and can be found in liquor stores along Naha's Kokusai Street.

Enjoy it on the rocks or as "mizuwari" (diluted with water). It pairs wonderfully with pork dishes like Rafute.

Awamori's unique aroma means it has a distinct flavor that might not be for everyone.

If you're curious to try it during your Okinawa trip but prefer a milder introduction,

I recommend the ready-to-drink Awamori cocktails mixed with coffee or citrus, available at FamilyMart.

6. Orion Beer

Orion Beer is Okinawa's dominant local brew, holding an overwhelming market share.

Perfectly suited to Okinawa's subtropical climate, it's crisp, dry, and clean.

During your visit, I highly recommend choosing Orion Beer over Asahi or Kirin.

Especially at an izakaya, a draft Orion beer goes down incredibly smoothly.

Okinawa truly offers a distinct culinary experience, unlike anything on mainland Japan!
