Rental Costs and Recommended Tips

Hi everyone, it's Baeji! (ᴗ͈ˬᴗ͈)ഒ
Today, I'm posting about car rental costs and insurance info – essential for anyone planning a trip to Okinawa! ꔛ
Before going to Okinawa, my biggest worry was whether I could drive a rental car without any accidents.
But after carefully reading and understanding the warnings in Korean,
I managed to finish my trip without a hitch! haha
Make sure to read the price comparisons by company and the insurance information before you book!

1. Car Rental in Okinawa

Okinawa Island is famous as a resort destination,
often called the 'Hawaii of Asia,' with a strong similar vibe to Jeju Island.
While you can still sightsee without a car,
it takes way too long and you end up wasting a lot of time...!
That's why I immediately rented a car and drove all over southern to central Okinawa.

When renting a car, the most important thing to check
isn't just proximity to the airport,
but rather if CDW and NOC are included.
These are essential for driving in Japan, especially with the left-hand traffic that can feel a bit unsettling.
✔️CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) = Exemption from car repair costs
✔️NOC (Non-Operation Charge) = Exemption from car rental company's business loss
If you get into an accident and the bumper is damaged,
CDW exempts you from paying for the car repairs. NOC, on the other hand, exempts you from the non-operation charge for the period the car can't be used due to repairs.
2. Company Comparison
So, no matter where you book,
you *must* search for options that include CDW + NOC coverage.

ZZimcar = CDW (Collision Damage Waiver), NOC (Non-Operation Charge)
Klook = Vehicle accident coverage, Non-operation loss coverage (NOC)
Kayak = Compares 7 booking sites and 29 companies
It's similar to how Skyscanner compares various airlines.
That's why Kayak offers a wider selection than ZZimcar or Klook,
leading to much cheaper costs.
Platform | Price | Booking Link |
ZZimcar | ~~$175 | |
Klook | ~~$168 | |
Kayak | ~~$161 |
- How to Book with Kayak -

1. Search for your location and dates on Kayak → Sort by lowest price
2. Select the car at the top → Confirm details
3. Proceed to payment for a product that includes CDW and NOC.
CDW and NOC are usually selected at the very end,
so just search for the lowest price without hesitation and then add them at the final step haha.
This way is cheaper than going directly through Klook, so I highly recommend booking through Kayak! ദ്ദി・ᴗ・)✧

3. Things to Watch Out For
One of the most common pieces of advice you'll hear about driving in Okinawa is:
"Left turns tight, right turns wide" (for left-hand traffic driving)
But after actually driving, I found that "left turns tight, right turns wide" is manageable once you get used to it, especially if you have a car in front of you.
The most dangerous moments are when you're trying to avoid parked cars.

On a single-lane road, if there are cars parked on the left side, you'll need to slightly cross the center line to the right to pass them.
Since the driver's seat is on the right, it's easy to misjudge the left side of your car, leading to hitting something on the left—which is the #1 cause of accidents ㅠㅠ
This really hits home because
even if you lose focus for just a moment, your car will naturally drift to the left ㅋㅋㅋ
Even when I tried to intentionally keep it straight, it always felt a little off...
So, you always have to keep an eye on your car to make sure it stays centered.

However, Okinawan drivers are smooth and relaxed,
I didn't hear a single car horn the entire time!
Don't be nervous, just take it slow!!!!!
Travel Tip |
Left turns tight, right turns wide Be careful not to drift to the left When avoiding parked cars on the left, remember your car's width! Indicator stalk is opposite (on the right) |
4. My Takeaways
If you stay alert during the initial stages of driving in Okinawa,
you'll get used to it for the rest of your trip and find it quite manageable.
For reference, I have 8 years of driving experience!
Just remember that you only need to drive slowly.

- Fueling -
For a compact car, the fuel cost for a 3-night trip
was less than ~$29.
So don't worry too much about fuel costs and just enjoy your drive!
When heading north, you can either take free toll roads
or get a separate toll gate card.

- Parking -
Most hotels in Okinawa charge for parking.
It might seem surprising, but since you can use the parking all day, coming and going as you please,
it's best to pay for parking.
Near the beaches, there are either paid parking lots or small free ones, so it's a good idea to search before you go.
Stores like Daiso or Parco didn't have parking fees.
Parking is available everywhere! ദ്ദി,,-`_´-)੭
No need to worry too much.
✔️Overall Summary
When renting a car in Okinawa, make sure to book with NOC (Non-Operation Charge) and repair cost exemption insurance as essential options.
I've seen cases where people chose the cheapest insurance and ended up paying hundreds of dollars ㅠ
Of course, that might have been bad luck,
but having comprehensive insurance gives you peace of mind during your trip.
Wishing everyone safe driving in Okinawa,
I'll conclude this post ◡̈

Frequently Asked Questions
When booking a rental car in Okinawa, what do CDW and NOC cover respectively, and why is it essential to confirm them?
CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) exempts you from car repair costs, while NOC (Non-Operation Charge) exempts you from business losses (non-operation fees) incurred during the rental car's repair period. Since Japan has left-hand traffic and the driver's seat is on the right, opposite to Korea, there's a higher risk of accidents. Therefore, it's crucial to confirm whether these two insurance coverages are included.
When comparing Okinawa rental car companies, which platform among Zimcar, Klook, and Kayak offers the cheapest price, around ~$161, and what are its advantages?
Among Zimcar, Klook, and Kayak, Kayak offers the cheapest price, around ~$161. Kayak's advantage is that it compares various booking sites and companies, similar to Skyscanner, offering a wider range of choices and lower costs.
Besides 'left-hand traffic' when driving a rental car in Okinawa, what is the most common cause of accidents, and how can it be prevented?
In Okinawa, besides left-hand traffic, the most common cause of accidents is when avoiding a parked car on the left side of a single-lane road. Due to the right-hand driver's seat, drivers often drift slightly to the left, touching the center line, and end up hitting something on their left. Always ensure your car stays centered and be mindful of the vehicle's width while driving.
Approximately how much was the fuel cost for a compact car for a 3-night trip when using a rental car in Okinawa?
For a compact car, driving through southern to central Okinawa for 3 nights, the fuel cost was less than ~$29. So, you can drive around without worrying about fuel costs.
