If you're only exploring downtown Naha on your Okinawa trip,
getting around by monorail is totally doable.
But if you plan to head up north to places like
the American Village, Cape Manzamo,
Churaumi Aquarium, or Junglia Park,
renting a car is going to make your trip so much easier!
However, if you just book a compact car solely based on price,
you might find that your suitcases won't even fit.
Plus, once you add full insurance coverage to a "budget" car,
the price difference compared to an SUV might actually be tiny.
So today, I’m going to share a detailed breakdown comparing
Compact vs. Mid-size vs. SUV prices and insurance! :)
1. Okinawa Car Rental Recommendations

When looking for a rental car in Okinawa,
the two most important things to check are the car type and insurance.
And honestly, the ultimate deciding factor
isn't just the number of passengers—it's the number of suitcases!
Even if a compact car technically fits 4 people,
the trunk space will usually only hold 1 suitcase.
Trying to squeeze 4 adults plus all of their luggage into a tiny car
is just not realistic or comfortable.

Also, when it comes to insurance—just in case of an accident—
you could end up dealing with not just repair bills
but also steep Non-Operation Charges (NOC) for the rental company.
If it's your first time driving on these roads,
I highly recommend looking at the waiver conditions
rather than just hunting for the absolute cheapest daily rate!
2. Compact vs. Mid-size vs. SUV Comparison Table
Category | Compact (Suzuki Wagon R class) | Mid-size (Nissan Note class) | SUV (Toyota Raize class) |
Estimated Price (3 Days, 2 Nights) | ~$40 | ~$61 | ~$67 |
Max Passengers | 4 people | 5 people | 5 people |
Recommended Capacity | 1–2 Adults | 2–4 Adults | 3–4 Adults / Families |
Suitcase Capacity | 1 suitcase | 2 suitcases | 2 suitcases |
Vehicle Type | Compact / Kei Car | Mid-size Hatchback | RV / Compact SUV |
Fuel & Transmission | Gasoline / Automatic
Airport Transfer | Shuttle service from Naha Airport, approx. 10–15 mins
Insurance Coverage | Basic Insurance Included | Basic Insurance Included | Basic Insurance + Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) Included |
Waiver Coverage | None | None | Covers personal liability, property, and vehicle damage. (Applies to the first accident only) |
Pros | Most budget-friendly and super easy to park | Great balance of ride comfort and trunk space | High road visibility and excellent insurance terms |
Recommended For | Couples or solo travelers with light luggage | 3–4 travelers seeking a reliable, balanced option | Family trips with kids or parents |
Please note that these prices are estimates based on a holiday period!
Rates can vary depending on your actual dates and availability.
Even for the same model, prices and insurance conditions differ by platform,
so be sure to double-check the details before finalizing your booking.

The price difference between the Toyota Raize SUV
and the mid-size Nissan Note is less than ~$6.
Since the SUV package includes comprehensive collision coverage,
I highly recommend going with the Toyota Raize.
Considering the peace of mind you get from better insurance
along with comfort for long-distance driving,
it's an upgrade that's absolutely worth every penny.

3. How to Book a Car Rental in Okinawa, Japan

The booking process itself is actually super simple.
I always use Klook because it compares
the lowest prices across different rental companies
all in one place!

Just enter your pick-up and drop-off dates and times,
compare car models and prices in the search results,
and check the insurance coverage, driver's age requirements,
and airport shuttle availability.

After booking, make sure to check the confirmation email
or notification from the rental agency.
I recommend setting your pick-up time at least one hour after
your flight lands to give yourself a comfortable buffer.
4. Important Tips for Renting a Car Abroad

When renting a car in Japan,
make sure you have these three essentials ready:
Your Home Country's Driver's License + Original International Driving Permit (IDP) + Passport
Note that you must get your International Driving Permit issued
at your local driver's license agency or police station before your trip.

Bilingual driver's licenses (with English on the back)
cannot be used to rent a car in Japan!
You absolutely need the booklet-style International Driving Permit (IDP) shown in the photo on the left.
They will refuse to hand over the car on the spot if you don't have it,
so make sure to get it issued and bring the hard copy with you!

Driving on the Left Side of the Road
In Japan, the steering wheel is on the right side of the car
and traffic flows on the left.
Making left and right turns, as well as navigating parking lot entrances/exits,
can be pretty confusing at first, so just take your time and don't rush!
Take a Video Before Driving Off
As soon as you get your car, take a quick video of
the bumpers, wheels, side mirrors, and doors!
Having any existing scratches pointed out to the staff beforehand
will save you from any unnecessary misunderstandings when you return the car.

Even for the exact same car model, prices, insurance coverage,
and airport shuttle services can vary wildly depending on the rental company.
Once your Okinawa trip dates are locked in, check if your preferred
car class is still available, and then compare the final prices including insurance coverage :)

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the price difference between a compact car and an SUV for a 3-day, 2-night rental in Okinawa, and which vehicle type do you recommend?
For a 3-day, 2-night rental during the Chuseok holiday, a compact car like the Suzuki Wagon R is ~$40, and an SUV like the Toyota Raize is ~$67. We recommend the Toyota Raize-class SUV, as it includes collision damage waiver and is less than a ~$6 difference from a mid-size car like the Nissan Note.
What time should I book my rental car pick-up after arriving at Naha Airport, and how long does it take to get to the rental company?
It is recommended to book your vehicle pick-up time with plenty of margin, about an hour after your flight arrival time. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes by shuttle bus from Naha Airport to the rental car company.
Can I use a driver's license with English on it to rent a car in Okinawa?
A Korean driver's license with English on the back cannot be used in Japan. To pick up your vehicle on-site, you must bring your original International Driving Permit (issued separately at a driver's license examination office or police station in your home country), your Korean driver's license, and your passport.
Is it okay to rent a compact car like a Suzuki Wagon R for 4 adults traveling in Okinawa?
Although the seating capacity of a compact car is 4 people, it is not recommended because the trunk can only fit about one suitcase. Since it can be quite cramped for 4 adults to travel with luggage, it is better to choose a vehicle type based on the number of suitcases rather than just the number of passengers.
