Okinawa 3-Day Itinerary: Hotels, Must-Sees & Tips (2026)
Okinawa offers a unique Japanese experience. This 3-day itinerary helps you plan your accommodation, explore top attractions, and make the most of your island escape.
Quick answer
- For a 3-day Okinawa trip, stay in Central Okinawa on Day 1, then Naha on the last day.
- Rent a car for flexibility, or take a bus tour for day trips to northern attractions.
- Visit Churaumi Aquarium early morning to avoid crowds; the dolphin show is free.
- Shopping is primarily in Naha City, convenient for your return to the airport.
- Snorkeling is difficult from November 2026 due to colder water temperatures.

Okinawa felt totally different from any other part of Japan I've explored so far. Everything else was fantastic, but the food... even after hunting down supposedly great spots, I didn't find a single one that truly blew me away, haha! So, my advice? Keep your food expectations a little low when you visit Okinawa.
Planning a 3-night, 4-day trip? I'll share an ideal itinerary with you! And remember, choosing the right accommodation location is key.
Map

Okinawa is a long, slender island. I explored by rental car, and it reminded me of driving around Jeju Island. Just a heads-up: a round trip from Naha city to the Churaumi Aquarium in the north can easily take over 5 hours!
If you're planning a day trip, ditch the rental car altogether – a bus tour is a much more efficient way to go.

Don't just book your accommodation in Naha city for the whole trip! It's much better to stay in the central region for your first night and then move to Naha city for your last night.
Wondering why not book Naha city on the first day? Well, you'll likely save your shopping for the last day anyway, and all the best spots are right around Naha street. Plus, heading back to the airport from the central or northern parts can add a significant travel burden.

Heads up! Fuel surcharges are set to increase from November, so booking your flights in October could save you some money. If your travel dates are firm, definitely check out flight prices on Trip.com beforehand.

Day 1

When you land, head straight to the central region. A great plan is to book your first nights in Onnason or Chatan, then switch to Naha city for your final day.

Staying in the central area makes it super convenient to get anywhere! American Village is a fantastic, easygoing spot for your first outing. It's packed with cafes and restaurants, and the pretty architecture makes for some great photo opportunities. After your flight and checking in on day one, you won't have tons of time, so a casual dinner and a relaxing walk are absolutely perfect.
Day 2

If you're traveling as a couple or with family, the Churaumi Aquarium is an absolute must-visit! Large tour groups tend to arrive around lunchtime, so my top tip is to go early in the morning to enjoy it without the crowds.

The dolphin show right next to the aquarium is free to watch, even without an admission ticket! You could easily spend half a day just enjoying this area. Plus, there's a charming tree-lined path called Bise Fukugi Tree Road nearby – definitely explore that as well.
Day 3

On Day 3, it's time to check out from your central accommodation and head south or to Naha city. Keep in mind there aren't many 'must-see' tourist attractions specifically in the south.

Shuri Castle is definitely worth a look too! I personally leaned more into a relaxing, resort-style trip rather than hitting every tourist spot, so I didn't venture too far. But I did check out the Tomari Iyumachi Fish Market, which is conveniently close to Naha. They offer super fresh sushi there, and I got to enjoy some delicious tuna sushi at a fantastic price!

I really feel that Okinawa, unlike many other destinations, isn't a place where you need a jam-packed schedule or to rush around frantically. You'll have plenty of fun just saving a few charming cafes and great restaurants and leisurely hopping between them.

For your last day, how about a delightful brunch at Senaga Island Umikaji Terrace before heading to the airport? Or, you could pop into a shopping mall near your hotel or Don Quijote to pick up some last-minute souvenirs – either way, it'll round out your trip perfectly!
From November onwards, the water temperature drops, so snorkeling becomes a bit challenging. My advice? Skip the intense activities, embrace the relaxation, and embark on a delicious quest to find Okinawa's best eateries!
