Here is our honest, completely self-funded review of Nanbada Seafood Kalguksu (Geoje Okpo Main Branch), a hidden gem recommended to us by a Geoje Island local!

This spot is incredibly popular among both residents and travelers, meaning you should definitely expect a wait during peak dining hours.

During our trip, we decided to grab dinner here before attending Sunday evening mass at the nearby Okpo Catholic Church. Even arriving right at dinner time, we had to join the waiting list.

Unfortunately, their legendary signature dish was already sold out for the day, but we still had an incredibly satisfying meal. Here is why this place deserves a spot on your Geoje itinerary.

If you search for top restaurants in Okpo, Geoje, this place consistently ranks near the top. The main secret behind its fame is the sheer freshness and abundance of their local seafood.

You can immediately tell why locals love it. Another highlight is their freshly made geotjeori (unfermented, crisp kimchi), prepared by hand every single morning. It pairs perfectly with the noodles.

But what truly sets Nanbada apart is their signature healthy green noodles, kneaded with fresh chives (buchu). It adds a subtle, wholesome flavor and a wonderful chewiness that you won't find in standard kalguksu spots.

As expected, the dining room was completely packed when we arrived.

We highly recommend booking in advance or arriving early, as popular menu items sell out fast once ingredients run out!

A Step Above Standard Seafood Noodles

It's All About the Freshness

To be honest, seafood noodle soup (kalguksu) is a very common dish in coastal Korea. You can find it almost anywhere.

However, Nanbada operates on a completely different level. While many places just use seafood to flavor the broth, this bowl is piled high with actual, fresh shellfish and seafood.

And then there's the signature green chive noodles. They have a wonderfully chewy texture and a clean, healthy taste. It's been nearly a month since our visit, and we still find ourselves craving this bowl. Combined with that crisp, daily-made kimchi, it's an unbeatable pairing.

Our Personal Dining Experience

We arrived around 6:00 PM, but their legendary signature dish—the Iron-Plate Seafood Stew—was already sold out. Though we were disappointed, we gladly ordered the Seafood Kalguksu and the Seafood Pajeon (savory pancake) instead.

When the noodle soup arrived, we couldn't help but gasp at the size of the portion!

Thanks to the mountain of fresh shellfish, the broth was incredibly light, clean, and deeply flavorful. Paired with the chewy green noodles and a bite of that spicy, crisp kimchi, it was absolute perfection.

The Seafood Pajeon was equally impressive. It had the perfect golden, crispy exterior while remaining soft on the inside, packed with generous chunks of squid and juicy shrimp.

To be completely transparent, there were two minor downsides. First, there is no dedicated parking lot, so you will need to search for street parking nearby. Second, because the restaurant is constantly full, it can get quite lively and noisy inside.
