Places to Visit in Yongin: Nam June Paik Art Center
Recommended for a Family Indoor Outing
I recently visited the Nam June Paik Art Center,
a place where you can immerse yourself in the masterpieces of Nam June Paik, the legendary pioneer of media art.
Honestly, I just assumed there'd be an entrance fee, but guess what? Admission is completely FREE!
But once I got there, I was absolutely blown away – 'This much for free?!' I thought.
There was so much to see and experience.
Throughout my visit, and even after leaving, I kept thinking how lucky Gyeonggi-do residents are to have such an amazing place! Haha.
It truly had more to offer than I expected, making it a fantastic spot
for a family visit!

Nam June Paik Art Center Parking

Parking is available in the lot right next to the Art Center.
The parking fee is also super reasonable at ~$1 per hour!
With free admission and affordable parking,
it was the perfect casual indoor excursion!

On the way to the entrance, there was a large safety cone installation artwork
using familiar traffic cones, the kind you often see on the street. It was fascinating to see such everyday objects transformed into art,
and it naturally drew my eye! Haha.
Nam June Paik Art Center Opening Information

This is the entrance to the Art Center!

Opened in 2008, it's a specialized media art museum that's actually been around longer than I thought. To be honest, before coming here,
I had no idea there was an art center dedicated to Nam June Paik in Korea! Haha.
Usually, at other museums, you might see just a few of Paik's representative works,
but an entire space centered around his creations is just incredible!

The actual building looks like this, and its sheer size and unique design made it quite a challenge to capture in a single shot.

"I really don’t have any special principles.
I just go with the flow."

Throughout the space, you can find quotes that offer glimpses into Nam June Paik's thoughts and artistic world.
Weekdays: 14:00, 16:00
Weekends: 11:00, 13:00, 14:00, 16:00
If you visit at these times, you can also join a docent-led tour.
If you prefer to appreciate the artworks with insightful explanations rather than just browsing,
timing your visit for a docent tour would be a great idea!

The TV Garden in the lobby!
TVs are installed throughout the garden, and the way they harmonize with the plants creates a strangely captivating display.
They almost look like digital flowers, don't they? Haha.
Exhibition Hall 1
Let the exhibition exploration begin!

This artwork, with its brilliantly glowing neon, was truly striking.
The vibrant colors and captivating lighting kept drawing my gaze, making it a piece I stared at for quite a while.

Among the must-see works at Nam June Paik Art Center is
the TV Buddha!
This piece features a Buddha statue gazing at a TV,
while a camera films the Buddha's image in real-time,
displaying it on the screen!
It's said to embody the meaning of self-reflection,
as the Buddha observes its own image on the TV.
Curious about what the Buddha was seeing on the screen, I leaned in for a peek,
and it was quite amusing to see our own faces appear on the screen too! Haha.

This piece features fish on the screen that move
along with the viewer's movements.
It was so fascinating and fun to try moving around and see the interaction firsthand.
It's not just an exhibition you passively observe; there are works that react to the audience's movements,
so I imagine kids would particularly love it if they came with their families!

A rabbit gazing at the moon :)
Each artwork had a different atmosphere, making it enjoyable
to explore them one by one.
Second Exhibition Hall

Heading up to the Second Exhibition Hall,
I found a distinctly different atmosphere from the first!
Even within the same space, the varying exhibition atmospheres allowed for
a fresh viewing experience.

An incredibly dazzling artwork that felt almost like
a swirling vortex!
The vibrant colors were so intense that it was far more impressive
to see in person than in photos.

The Turtle made from 166 TVs, which I had previously seen at
the Ulsan Museum of Art's inaugural exhibition!
It's always such a joy to stumble upon a familiar artwork
during an exhibition, haha!
Indeed, artworks you've experienced in person, even once,
seem to stick in your memory much longer when you encounter them again.

There was also a space where you could watch videos, and while I wasn't sure what the artwork intended,
it felt a bit suggestive, so it's no secret that we all quickly moved on, haha!
Memorabilia

We also got to explore an archive collection that recreated
Nam June Paik's studio.
Unlike simply viewing his artworks, it was a fascinating space to get a glimpse into
the environment where Nam June Paik created his masterpieces.
Get Creative: The Stamp Bookmark Making Experience

And over on one side, I stumbled upon a fantastic little corner where you could get hands-on and create your very own bookmarks using stamps.
Imagine crafting your unique bookmark, stamping it with the iconic Paik Nam June Art Center building, its distinctive logo, and even snippets of his legendary artworks – how cool is that?!
Of course, I couldn't resist! So I rolled up my sleeves and proudly crafted a bookmark to take home.

There was even an activity area, perhaps aimed at kids (though I'm not entirely sure!), and seeing it instantly brought back hilarious memories of making 'Kkumdoli' (a popular Korean character) using crafting skills back in elementary school! I just cracked up laughing! Haha.
A Treasure Trove: The Art Shop

And of course, no art exhibition experience is complete without a delightful browse through the art shop! 😉

They even have a cozy cafe, and I was pleasantly surprised by the wide array of unique merchandise – it was so much fun just looking around!
I absolutely fell in love with a cross-body bag, but alas, the price tag wasn't quite as charming as the bag itself, so I had to settle for admiring it from afar.
Beyond the Galleries: The Paik Nam June Art Center Walking Path

Once you've soaked in all the incredible art inside, don't just rush off! Make sure to take a leisurely stroll along the beautiful walking path – it's an absolute must-do!

From the elevated path, the art center building itself looks stunning, and you get to enjoy the picturesque surrounding landscape too. It's truly a treat for the eyes!
It's the perfect spot to take a slow, reflective walk after the exhibition, allowing you to unwind and truly absorb everything you've seen.
Final Thoughts

Initially, I imagined the Paik Nam June Art Center as a place where I'd simply catch a glimpse of a few of his renowned works. But wow, was I wrong! It turned out to be an absolute treasure trove, brimming with far more wonders than I ever anticipated!
From captivating media art powered by televisions to interactive installations you can physically engage with, extensive archives, hands-on experience zones, and even a vibrant art shop – I was so engrossed, time simply vanished!
And here's the best part, the ultimate cherry on top: admission is completely FREE!! How amazing is that?!
It's particularly perfect for family outings, especially on those tricky weather days – whether it's pouring rain, scorching hot, or freezing cold, when outdoor plans just aren't an option. It's my top recommendation for an indoor adventure in Yongin!
With amazing exhibitions, engaging experiences, and even a serene walking path, if you're ever exploring things to do in Yongin, I genuinely hope you'll make it a point to visit at least once.
Oh, and for all you Gyeonggi-do residents, I am SO incredibly envious! You've got this gem right on your doorstep! 😉
And to wrap up this post, here's a lovely family photo, beautifully reflected in the art center's striking facade!
